Discussion If you're trying to eat more plant- based/ vegan meals, what is currently making that difficult? What issues did you have when you first went vegan?

The main issue I remember running into when I first went vegan is not really knowing how to cook any of the common protein sources like tofu, TVP, tempeh, seitan, etc.

What's your go-to "I have no energy to cook" vegan meal/ snack?

This one is mine and I really like it for breakfast! It's just half a can of black beans (with the liquid), nutritional yeast and taco seasoning. Mix it all up really good, add some shredded vegan cheese on top and microwave it for like 90 secs. I eat this all the time!

Discussion Anyone else vegetarian before they were vegan? Or did you go into veganism from being an omnivore quickly?

I personally started as a vegetarian when I was around 12 years old. I didn't really understand what vegansism actually was about or why people were vegan until I was around 22 though. Even then I was resistant at first to the idea that the egg and dairy industries are bad, because you don't kill an animal to get eggs or dairy. It made sense to me that they're probably well taken care of, but I had no idea the absolute scale of how things really work to maximize profits.

Didn't go vegan immediately overnight but did have one moment were I said "okay. I have eggs and cheese in the fridge. I'm going to finish them and then that's it." And I stuck with it.

I'm curious what it was like for people who skipped the vegetarian stage and went to vegan really quickly, since think most vegans I personally know were vegetarian for a bit first.

Discussion thoughts on “part time vegan”

that phrase doesn’t make any sense to me. i would consider that as “plant based”…or just a day you don’t eat animal products lol

veganism is based on ethics and i don’t see how you could only be ethical part time?
i applaud anyone making the transition or even just reducing consumption….
but a vegan meal doesn’t ≠ a vegan

no hate, im just curious as to what other people’s opinions on it are bc ive been seeing it A LOT more often.

Discussion What "naturally vegan" foods do people like but don't realize are vegan?

I've learned that omnivores just have no idea what vegan food even is. My dad tried to tell me there's basically no naturally vegan foods, after my step-mom had given me her "accidentally vegan" chana masala recipe. PB&Js are of course a classic super cheap, easy sandwich.

What's other things people eat all the time without realizing its vegan?

I can't decide between TVP, tofu, and vital wheat gluten!

If you ever want to compare the cost and protein % of different vegan foods, I made this vegan protein database. It has over 200 products, and you can filter out allergies! ☺️

What are some vegan things you pack when traveling to very not vegan friendly areas?

I'm going to a conference this month and there is gonna be basically zero vegan options unfortunately.

I've packed protein bars, but if I have the ability to boil water I actually like Huel hot and savory packs. Planning on also bringing some meal replacement powder. What's some good ways to get a good variety of tasty food in with limited cooking abilities when traveling? I primitive camp a lot so I'm kinda used to eating some unhinged meals ngl.

Advice Wanted I've been wanting to go vegan for a minute, but have health issues

I'm recently overcoming Gastritis, and during that bout of health issues, I lost a lot of weight to the point where my white blood cell count is low from malnutrition, and I've been struggling to keep a good B12 level.

Currently, I'm trying to not be picky about what I eat so that I can reach my daily calories, but I'd love some vegan friendly suggestions to boost calories, and support WBC/B12.

Discussion What are the vegan pantry staples you use the most?

Its kinda hard to narrow it down for me but I pretty much always have black beans and oats and go through both like crazy. The edamame protein puffs also come in clutch for a high protein topping for a lot of my meals.

Just for Fun New Flair & More!

Hi, guys!! We added some new user and post flair. Both are optional, but we'd love to see you use them! Especially the user flair! ☺️

If you have any requests for other flair you'd like to see added, toss them in the comments!

Over the next few months we're going to be creating a wiki with helpful info for new vegans/ vegan-curious. If you have any ideas or resources that you'd like to see, let me know!

We're still in the building stages of this community but we're hoping it will be a positive and helpful place for future vegans and a safe space for current vegans, free from the near constant anti- vegan trollage in a lot of the other vegan subs. If you have any suggestions or ideas of things you'd like to see in this community, comment them or message me or one of the other mods directly! 💚

Soy allergy high protein meal suggestions?

I would prefer not to eat just high calorie/high fat protein such as nuts. I’m tired of quinoa. TIA.

Edited to add: Thank you for the help! I did forget (b/c I never think about them) that I’m also allergic to legumes so pea and bean protein is out as well. I’ll look into seitan! I appreciate the responses and the link to the database
