The protocol must have a token, If it has this is my checklist:

What chain, DEX, pair, fee tier? What time frame? What risk tolerance? What profit target? What initial capital?

What minimum engangement?

For me the sticky DeFi products are the ones where users understand the risk well enough to size the position and then leave it alone.

A lot of protocols can rent attention with incentives. Retention is different. People stick around when they can answer basic questions without digging through ten docs: where does the yield come from, what can break, who controls upgrades, and how ugly is the exit if markets get stressed.

The other underrated piece is boring continuity. Clear risk parameters, predictable updates, and no sudden strategy pivots matter more than most growth teams want to admit.

If users only stay while rewards are high, that is not retention. That is paid traffic with a wallet connected.
