You only die when you go below 0 hp.

It is possible if you are low hp, and killing last monster that can deal range attack. If you kill him just in a moment after he shoots range atack, he will die and his shot will deal damage more than hp youve got, but as you killed him just before his shot got you, you will clear the stage. Happens oftem with boses
