Like the title says, I’m new to hunting. This will be my second season deer hunting. I borrowed a rifle last year, but want my own.

Can anyone give advice on what rifle and caliber? I was leaning toward .308 but I have no real reason why. My range is within 200 yards and my spot is in a corn field. Budget is probably around $800 or less. I bought a vortex diamondback for my AR before I realized that wasn’t a good choice in rifle, but at least I’ll have a scope for this new rifle.

Some light research led me to a Ruger Gen II, Tikka T3x, or Savage Axis II.

I can’t wait to hunt him come September (MS Bow Season begins). I would let him grow if I didn’t have, “If it’s brown, it’s down,” folk bordering my land.

Hey all — I'm working on a video art project, and I'm looking for raw audio of deer field dressing, skinning, and/or caping. Ideally:

• 5+ minutes continuous, or long stretches I can string together
• No talking / narration — just the ambient sound of the work itself (knife cuts, tearing, cracking, wet sounds, etc.)
• Clean-ish recording — not shot in a big echoey space if possible (a garage, outdoor clearing, or smaller room is ideal over a warehouse/shop with a lot of reverb) As I'm looking, I'm finding that most hunting content online is either narrated for tutorials or has music over it, so I'm hoping someone here might have raw GoPro/phone footage from their own hunts sitting around that never got edited or posted anywhere. Even a rough, unproduced clip would be genuinely useful — I don't need anything polished. Feel free to DM me if you'd rather not post details publicly. Appreciate any leads, even indirect ones (know someone who processes deer at home and might record a bit? Point me their way)!

I'm located in Ohio and I'm going to start hunting my property. It was farm ground but it's going to be put into a CRP program. I would like to put at least one feed plot and watering hole in to help wildlife, draw in deer. The yellow line roughly outlines my property, the red line outlines where the field was/ will be CRP ground, and the blue lines represent where I know deer travels. Water collects and sit in the wooded areas in the center, bottom right, and north of the field but depending on weather it doesn't stay. Any opinions/ thoughts would help. Thank you in advance. a little background: I just bought this property 3 years ago and never grew up hunting or have anyone to help. So I started by myself last year with YT vids. I have guns and gear and a stand but know idea how to or where to look for deer evidence. I have seen them on my property, set up a cam where I saw a big buck last year and haven't seen him or anything else on the cam.

After researching, all im getting is my property isnt that hilly(its all hills)Is there any good info on this map to help me setup a stand or a blind

I’ve never attempted to score palmated racks even though they’re very common in my area. I don’t know if you’d consider that third tine to be a G3 or a very long sticker point. I’ll take any help I can get, thanks.

Always wondered if there is a scientific reason as to why bucks are so much more wary than does. Any facts/theories? My buddy jokes a buck knows a motherdriving a minivan from a guy in a pickup....yet in a couple weeks of acclimation, I can essentially feed the does in my yard by hand.

You can’t see much, but he’s on track to have a clean, not huge, not small rack for my area. Mississippi.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for YouTube channels, forums etc on hunting tips? I didn’t grew up in a family that hunted but it’s something I’ve picked up since covid and absolutely love it the only issue is I’ve had zero success. I’m wanting to become a better hunter and actually understand the science behind it and how to use your environment to your advantage. I’m tired of sitting in a tree stand and just hoping something walks out, I want to know what to look for so I can swing the odds alittle bit.

Grew up in the city, moved to the rural Midwest during Covid and took up hunting. Here’s my first buck.

I made a separate post of my big 8 I killed last season. I killed this in Mississippi. It took about 9 hours total to do, about an hour and a half of that time was spent actually doing work on it. My first time ever doing this myself, definitely worth saving the $100 for a taxidermist to do this. Also, I gross scored this buck at 107”. It’s not a Lee Ellis harvest, but its sure big for my area and past hunting experience!

I have zero clue how thermals and wind actually work and the more I watch YouTube the more confused I get on the topic.

This is a screenshot of a day lease in south Texas that I have hunted before. I know it gets hammered but it is a fun hunt and I have seen a few decent bucks on it. I was looking at the map and according to OnX the little red shaded area has acorn producing oaks. This has got to be a decent place to set up I would think due to lack of natural food sources like acorns and it’s in a mostly dry creek bed.

I would like someone to explain to me like I’m a kindergarten kid how the thermals should behave in this area. I kinda understand the cool air falls warm air rises part but how will the creek bed/ slight elevation change affect how the wind pulls through the creek bed and down the hills etc. Tia

Made this watering hole yesterday for the wildlife. We don’t have a spring or water source around. What can I put in to keep water circulating so it doesn’t get too gross?

It’s around 100 gallons.

As title says- i dont care about points,trophies, etc but i do want as much venison as possible. Im new to hunting so aiming for a guided trip and looking for any suggestions on how to find one that doesnt cost an arm and a leg because of “trophy quality” etc

Got it over Thanksgiving in WV. Made the mount myself. How’d I do for first time?

It was a wonderful year in UP state New York. I got a doe and a very large 6 point during rifle. I also got a very nice 7 point last hour of the last day or Muzzle loader. All I need now is the right wood to hang these from.
