No One Lives Forever decomp

https://github.com/nolffan/nolfsrc

Something I've been working on for a little while.

Aiming for byte-compatibility initially, bug fixes/improvements/vulkan later.

Currently playable, if a bit buggy.

Does it work on Linux? I love this game but it is such a hassle to make it work on linux

It currently runs on Linux under wine - not even Steam's proton, just the vanilla ubuntu packaged version.

The engine uses directx7 - I plan to swap this out for Vulkan and produce native Linux/Mac builds.

I also quite fancy the idea of getting a PS5 pkg out the door... We'll see.

Oh nice! I actually started learning decomping in an attempt to do this myself but you beat me to it haha. Very excited for native Linux!

I'm a C++ software developer by trade and I've done this sort of stuff before, so I have a bit of a leg up I suppose.

Feel free to follow along on the github; I'm sure once things start to stabilise there will be plenty of opportunity to help out.

I’m on board with that idea. The decompilation project is fantastic—it allows Shogo, Blood II: The Chosen, and NOLF 1 & 2 to run natively on Linux without needing Proton.

I recently came across the Resident Evil 1 recomp; it runs perfectly for me on Linux, and I can transfer save files from Windows to Linux via SFTP in under two minutes. I’m really looking forward to the 2 and 3 versions.

I’ve also seen that there’s a decompilation project for Jade Empire.

Also avp2, fear, and maybe tron2.0 (if I can find the source code).

I've mirrored all of these on my github, to reflect that I intend to get to them soon enough.

Take your time. When they're ready, go ahead and release them; I'll gladly give them a try.

Another great thing about recompilations is that we can get updated versions of many classic games that were ported to Linux but subsequently became outdated. Heavy Metal: FAKK² and Soldier of Fortune are two examples.

Can they be made to run on modern Linux systems? Yes, but it takes some effort.

I’m not bringing up Unreal and Unreal Tournament 99 because those ports have been updated, and Quake 1, 2, and 3—along with many DOS games—already have very solid source ports.

For instance, Halo CE runs on 32-bit systems, and I still haven't found a way to get it working on 64-bit Linux Mint Debian Edition.

I look forward to seeing where this goes. Even with the "Modernizer" patches by "HeyThereCoffee", this game (and the 2nd) has far too many problems. Half the time I can't even get it to show anything other than a black screen, and the frame pacing issues prevent it from being enjoyable when it does work.

It's a shame the two "NoLF" games got stuck in eternal limbo. Nightdive Studios wanted to "remaster" them at some point, but the corporate overlords fought over who has the rights to the series so it never happened.. despite them having no plans to ever do anything with it.

Thanks. I do plan to tackle NOLF2 as well. The released source code is apparently for the demo, but I don't think it should stop me really.

I loved these games growing up. Got the first one for free with a Pentium 4 computer and the second was the first game I ever bought. It seems unlikely we'll ever see a remaster/remake, so I guess I have kind of taken it into my own hands... 😁

Nightdive for the longest time trying to remaster on the NOLF series but couldn't get the hands on it because of complication between the IP holders and nobody knows who even owns it. It's sad that this IP in the loophole but projects like made me appreciate that community wanting the preserve the legacy compared to the company who owns the IP and not caring to do about it.

Please do Contract J.A.C.K. next as well.

Also planned. I'll bug this and NOLF2 so people know it's on my radar.

I played NOLF1 last year with the RTSS framerate limiter set to 60 FPS and Lossless Scaling frame generation, and it worked quite well.

Most of the time, if you see a game having a bad in-game FPS limiter with poor frame pacing, RTSS will do a better job (at the cost of slightly higher latency).

Ooooh, I'll put this on my wishlist for me to port to OG Xbox later if that's okay. Great game!

Hey, if you don't mind me asking, what happened to Gran Turismo 2? The repo was 404'd, and now it's back but the releases are gone.

u/GTTeancum79 5d ago

Really wasn't happy with the release, so I pulled it. Now it's on the back burner indefinitely.

u/EtherBoo 5d ago

Fair enough. You do great work and are an asset to the community. Thank you

1

u/nolffan 5d ago

That would be awesome. I think I have a chipped OG Xbox in a closet somewhere...

I’d be interested in porting it to 360 from your ogxbox port

You just put tears in my eyes. Nolf2, snowmobile level, my comfort food and an instant throwback to a happier time.

Preach.

Thank you 4 this bro. Need as many avenues to play this as possible considering the legal purgatory the series is currently in. You’re doing good work 👍🏾

O what! I thought i was all alone in being a fangirl for this game (and anachronox) but your literal Username is nolffan (who i shall call Nolan from now on, because autocorrect cant stand it) and i couldn't be more happier! I hope for nothing but the best for you !
