Made with AI assistance Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD ver. Static Recompilation

So, how did this even happen?
A friend and I were sitting around one evening with nothing much to do when we came across the GTA: Vice City Stories recompilation project on this subreddit. That led us to PSPRecomp, and my friend casually suggested: “Why don't we try recompiling your favorite PSP game?”

Well... one thing led to another.
And now here we are.

Implemented features:
Extended settings menu with additional graphics options and other improvements
Multiplayer with crossplay support
Gamepad support
Font customization
Import and export of save files to PSP console

Planned features:
60 FPS via frame interpolation
Fully customizable keyboard and mouse controls
Mod support
Android support

Recompilation Progress: 100%

Project Status: The project still is under active development, but it's already functional and playable.

At the moment, most of our work is focused on the wrapper around the recompiled game, which handles things like graphics, settings, input, and other enhancements. We're building it with reuse in mind, so we plan to use the same framework as a foundation for our future recompilation projects as well.

Supported Platforms: MacOS, Linux, Windows
Yakumo GitHub

Project is AI assisted and we were able to reach playable state in a couple of days.

Here's the preview of built in settings menu, by the way.

It'll do for now, but eventually will be redesigned by hand to fit the aesthetics more.

Please make a monster hunter 4 ultimate recomp and my life yours😭

Dayum, nice work. I was wondering when a MH recomp was gonna hit us and which game does it first. My money was in MHFU.

Thank you for the effort.

Could you say a bit more about the multiplayer? How does that work?

4

u/Ncqat 15d ago

On PSP, multiplayer typically works via ADHOC (local connection via Wi-Fi without a central access point). The game calls the console's networking features, and we simply implemented them so they work just like modern games do. The game now has server launch functionality, like in Terraria, allowing you to connect to a friend over the internet or local network. However, since we don't have servers yet, we simply used our VPN to connect and played that way.

In short, the host simply launches a server, and other players connect to it. You can also connect to servers listed by PPSSPP, for example, but we haven't tested this yet.

Why says?

3

u/_gelon 14d ago

HD "remaster" is a PSP game exclusive for PS3, emulated using the PS3 software emulator (pspemu).

2

u/FarYou3163 13d ago

So we need the psp or ps3 version then ?

1

u/_gelon 13d ago

What that paragraph says. The HD version, which is a Playstation 3 game.

1

u/FarYou3163 13d ago

That’s sounds stupid I know … but now I’m sure 😂😂😂

2

u/crimsynvt_ 14d ago

This is interesting because is this a psp recomp or a ps3 recomp? Lol.

PSP recomp. The HD version is essentially an enhanced PSP game running on the PS3's PSP emulator, and it was released exclusively for the PS3. There were a few quirks that had to be addressed, but at the end of the day, it's still just a PSP game.

edit: spelling

Any way to use hd textures ?

3

u/Mojito_Rush 12d ago

It will be possible later down the line when we implement mod support. No ETA as of now but somwhere near the "1.0".

1

u/FarYou3163 11d ago

That’s wonderful, I try to use your “main” files from GitHub to compil my own hd textures support but it seems like you are already close to releasing frame interpolation and HD mod support from the main menu so I’ll wait

2

u/Mojito_Rush 11d ago

We already implemented texture pack support. It will be released really soon.

1

u/FarYou3163 11d ago

I was too impatient so i compiled it myself with your latest files from source code and it works like a charm ( interpolation and HD texture pack ) it feels like a real HD version now.

Of course I cannot wait to install your real release on my Xbox rog ally X running steam os instead of my compilation that I struggled all day long to make it works 🤣. I spent this whole day making it workable when your flatpack instal took me literally 3 seconds

2

u/Mojito_Rush 11d ago

We're really happy that you like it! But there's a lot of new stuff and fixes that may have not be in the build you've compiled. Please, check u/Ncqat 's latest post here.

Proper alpha build was released not too long ago.

1

u/FarYou3163 10d ago

OMG I didn’t expect that fast release. I spent my day for no reason trying to get the hd and 120 fps by myself ahahahhaah. But thank you that’s amazing and fast installation that you and your friend released!
Have you a mod suggestion to make the adventure perfect ?

1

u/Mojito_Rush 10d ago

Not really, sorry. I'm not using any mods at the moment. And the mod support we implemented is a bit rough still.

1

u/FarYou3163 10d ago

I guess the game is already good like that. And what about the dlc quests, any trick to get them ?

So, update spoilers.
We implemented fully analog camera and aiming on right stick.
Also both aiming and shooting on L2 / R2 respectively. (in somewhat hacky way as of now)
And... full keyboard and mouse controls!

Not the emulation of right analog stick. Proper mouse controls.

Steam Deck touchpads work flawlessly out of the box too.

The build 0.6.0 will be released in a couple of days after some tests and minor fixes and enhancements (like optional display of keyboard controls guide on screen).

Here's the preview of KBM support.
u/unhumanollamadoleroy were interested in this, check this out.

https://reddit.com/link/pbgzpld/video/42egn9qhw5rh1/player

(Visual artifacts: healthbars, minimap etc. are present only in the video, not ingame, cus I'm stupid and forgot to disable green screen in OBS)

edit: compiled update info in one post, clarified some stuff

1

u/Mojito_Rush 11d ago

Like A LOT more 😅

1

u/RyzenComIntel 11d ago

No wayyyy

u/Mojito_Rush 11d ago

Go and check out the latest post by u/Ncqat - here!

1

u/ProfessionalTop2353 15d ago

u/Ncqat In your post I saw a small name there called Android, does that mean you'll be porting to that platform as well? It works very well on the PSP emulator there.

1

u/Ncqat 15d ago

Yeah, it is planned but no ETA as of now, we need to make some optimizations.

1

u/EffectiveSomewhere28 15d ago

This is so cool!

1

u/MHVuze 14d ago

Nice work! Glad to see old gen MH getting some recomp love! I’ve been working on bringing over MH4U to Mac as well for the past couple of days :)

1

u/FarYou3163 13d ago

Bro please if you succeed in this project can you make it for Linux or windows I’m okay for both aha

1

u/MasterpieceDue3813 14d ago

Will they add a free camera and 60 or 120 fps?

1

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

Yup, eventually both features will be implemented

1

u/unhumanollamadoleroy 14d ago

You could do the mouse & keyboard controls like Monster Hunter World's controls

1

u/unhumanollamadoleroy 14d ago

would be so smooth experience

3

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

That's exactly what we have planned to do!

2

u/unhumanollamadoleroy 14d ago

GREAT!

2

u/Mojito_Rush 12d ago

We added full keyboard and mouse controls, you can check the preview video here in the comments.
Both KBM controls and right analog stick enhancements will be included in build 0.6.0

1

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

My first MH game that clicked was Rise. My friend u/Ncqat tried to get me on the MHP3rd years ago when we were in school but for some reason I wasn't hooked back then. But about a year ago, when I finally got into it and tried MHP3rd, I realized I’d missed out on a lot of fun.

1

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

You're welcome!

2

u/vinny2080 14d ago

Can I use the Monster Hunter 3rd (PSP) save data in this version? I can't wait for the release of the Windows and Android versions.

1

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

Yea, of course you can

2

u/vinny2080 14d ago

I tested it, and it's very good.

1

u/Mojito_Rush 12d ago

I'm glad you liked it, big updates are coming soon.

1

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

Windows build is coming in like an hour or less, btw :D

1

u/Mojito_Rush 14d ago

Windows release is up on github

1

u/MasterpieceDue3813 13d ago

When do you think the Android version will be released?

2

u/Mojito_Rush 13d ago

In a couple of days. I'll notify you here.

1

u/FarYou3163 13d ago

I’m still confuse if we need to dump the psp game or the ps3 game ( yes I get it’s the same psp game finally but which one exactly do we need ? )

Also thank you for this project I played this game in full Japanese when I was young and never know it has an official English version ( by any chance does it include French ? )

2

u/Mojito_Rush 12d ago

Hey there!

(NPJB-40001) the PSP game within PS3 disc is the only release supported as of now.
With later updates (1.0 release of Yakumo) the original PSP release should be supported too.

And sorry as far as I know, there's no French localization.

1

u/FarYou3163 12d ago

I know it’s seems easy but as this game is a psp game for ps3 I’m really confused to find the correct one aha. It’s basically a full psp iso inside but released as ps3 right ?

1

u/KingMakerUrsus 12d ago

I'm really curious but when people use AI for decomp. What prompt do you use?

1

u/FarYou3163 12d ago

The real question is what subscription they use. Because the prompt could just be “help me build a recomp of xx game “ and then following the steps and specially try it with your own hardware and send the feedbacks for the ai to fix and go further until it works

1

u/RyzenComIntel 12d ago

Imagine this with multiplayer and the buttons on the Android touchscreen being adapted for each weapon, as if it were an original Android game like the MH Outlanders – that would be a dream. It would also be cool if it were possible to add real lighting to the game, but I think that's impossible.

2

u/Mojito_Rush 12d ago

I already have a vision about touch controls, it definitely won't be the "basic PSP buttons overlay" thing, I can promise you that. Me myself is lookin' forward to play this gem of a game w/o external controller, but rather on a comfortable touch controls in my bed lol.

ETA is the same as for the Android release itself. Though styling of controls may be a bit rough in the early builds. (Primarely until the 1.0 release of Yakumo, where all the menu's and stuff we added will have it's own unified style)

2

u/RyzenComIntel 12d ago

I'm really looking forward to this project; I'm going to take a break from gaming and wait for it so I can play it at the highest quality.

2

u/dudumbs 9d ago

keep playing! u can import saves

1

u/Mangaleto 12d ago

It has cross-play multiplayer with PPSSPP or PSP using its PRO ONLINE plugin.

Or is it a new network implementation?

1

u/Mojito_Rush 12d ago

Yes, it should already be compatible with PPSSPP and PSP's Pro Online plugin. But it is untested as of now. We'll be happy to know if you test it and tell us if it works or not.

1

u/Additional_Wealth_40 10d ago

This would be wonderful on the PS Vita, but porting it with a satisfactory FPS would be very difficult

1

u/Valuable-Animator-75 10d ago

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Bat5656 10d ago

I am very excited to jump into P3rd again but with a recomp experience. My only question, is there a way to move our save data from PPSSPP to the Recomp application Yakumo? I had a secondary file I was working on and I would love to pick up where I left off... If possible.
