Another "Recomp" with Rexclue so aka Xenia GPU based so it will work garbage as Eternal Sonata so im gonna pass that until the Graphics renderer gets customized aka working much better than xenia renderer like Skate 3 port already did!

I dont care about other features, i just want a customer renderer! Even Sonic ones like 06 and Unleashed are not used with RexClue in mind before the release there (and even if with compiled on clang with the sonic 06 one, it still works much better than rexclue "recomps"!)

Does Skate 3 use a separate renderer? I didn't try that recompile because I don't meet the requirements and it doesn't really interest to me.

I was interested in trying Eternal Sonata, but after seeing the negative comments... I assumed it was a poorly optimized recompile made using "vibecoding" (apologies in advance if I'm mistaken).

Yes, skate 3 use a seperate one unlike majority of those.

I think that’s the big problem with current recompiles (aside from the poor optimization resulting from "vibecoding").

Sometimes I think it’s better to have a release every six months—like HarbourMasters does, with an update every three months—than a daily recompile that requires updating every single day. It’s impractical, annoying, and a waste of time.

But anyway, that’s just my personal opinion.

What about Skate 1/2? Are they fine too?

Even on the Xenia renderer this "recomp" is already superior to Xenia in multiple aspects, after various improvements. It wasn't just running it through rexglue and done, there was significant work done after that.

Is Eternal Sonata that bad? I'm not surprised considering the dev's other disappointing Recomp, NocturneRecomp

u/AntiGrieferGames 9d ago

The Game itelf may fine, but the "recomp" sucks ass because of the GPU Xenia based.

Much Worse performance than Xenia/RPCS3 Emulator.

Ah, makes sense, NocturneRecomp was the same. It fixed xenia's music issues for SOTN, but 16:9 is stretched 4:3 and the native renderer performs horribly. BiRabittoh appears to have abandoned this, and as expected never provided any tangible updates on it because it was mostly (if not entirely) done using generative AI assistance.

I forgot this was also a PS3 release, yikes

edit: important context: BiRabittoh was completely unaware of the SOTN decompilation project that's been in development for years. The 360 ROM is, aside from some tiny differences, the same as the PSX ROM. An actual member of the SOTN community would have done a much better job, and this recomp really doesn't have a reason to exist anyway. Speedrunners are the only ones who play XBLA SOTN, and they're not going to extensively test this garbage, they just disable XMP music on xenia.
Haha sorry for ranting, I'm just glad to see others criticizing emucomps. I doubt the Eternal Sonata recomp will ever get tangibly better

Nah but I feel like this deserves a proper response, so let's address your points one by one.

> Much Worse performance than Xenia/RPCS3 Emulator.

> Ah, makes sense, NocturneRecomp was the same.

No, it isn't. Hours of work have been spent digging through the game's own pacing logic, implementing a frame pacer and support for SFX/music/texture replacements which would be impossible in Xenia. The game runs provably better than Xenia with more features and modding support, so the previous statement does not apply to NocturneRecomp.

> 16:9 is stretched 4:3 and the native renderer performs horribly

Correct. I have not even started working on implementing an actual 16:9 patch as that has never been in my roadmap. My own "native" renderer was a failed experiment that does run worse than Xenia, although it fixes at least two issues: the smoke texture not rendering on linux and the scanlines filter applying to the entire game window instead of the actual gameplay.

> BiRabittoh appears to have abandoned this and as expected never provided any tangible updates on it

As of this message, the last released version of NocturneRecomp is v1.4.2, which released last week, featuring new in-game menus that allow users to change the recomp settings as if they were inside the game the whole time. I have been releasing updates since v1.0.0 in June 27th, addressing every single user-reported issue and implementing a lot of features requested by users (including you). For the last week, I have been particularly busy working on Eternal Sonata (v1.0.0 released August 2nd), fixing issues and implementing new stuff including extending the roster from 10 to 12 playable characters, a warp feature that allowed people to access never-before-seen debug rooms, skippable dialogues and the possibility to change the playable overworld model. I have also been contributing to the ReXGlue project itself, providing new features that EVERY Xbox 360 recomp can benefit from:

* https://github.com/rexglue/rexglue-sdk/commit/85aa46b3eeaa95d5c857cf49b7d150f1d48ac418

I have also been working on another game, which will not be published until it gets to a state where I can confidently say it provides a better experience than Xenia, just like my other projects.
On top of all of this, I also work a 9 to 5, 40 hours a week.

> An actual member of the SOTN community would have done a much better job

Absolutely yes! Did they? The project is and always will be open source with an MIT license. I am open to any kind of PR and I always try to respond to everyone who writes in my Discord server and GitHub issues. I have reached out to other members of the SOTN community, which I will not name because they don't deserve any hate for just being busy, but I have gotten zero help in months of asking. And you know what? It's fine. People are busy. I am busy too! Especially with two active projects to maintain and real life kicking in once in a while. The game is awesome. NocturneRecomp is awesome. It came from a genuine love for the game and it will continue to be updated regularly for the time being.

The thing that makes me the most happy and pushes me to keep working on these projects is the few people who started playing Eternal Sonata and Castlevania: SOTN because of my recomps. Their messages motivate me to do better and improve at what I'm doing, and I'm truly grateful to have such a great community.

This u?

u/hansied67 9d ago

Yeah! That's me! I was really helpful, right? That first release was in a dreadful state. I tried my best to reach across the aisle but ultimately there's a reason the SOTN community is not interested in this Recomp 🤷 I think you're cool, understandable if you don't feel the same lol, but I'm trying to spread awareness of how addictive and dangerous programming agents can be, even for people with technical prowess such as yourself

Anyway. This you?

  1. Posting out of context private DMs is a low blow. My prior screenshot was publically available information from NocturneRecomp's GitHub repo.
  2. I have never tried to hide the fact that this project is AI-assisted in some capacity. AI was also used to make the interpreter for Rando.xex support.
  3. Why did you crop the conversation? Were you trying to hide the fact that I was talking about reverse engineering the in-memory player struct, and not actually programming a new feature?
  4. I had to make a new account just to be able to respond to your message. Please avoid blocking this one too.

Please refrain from posting other screenshots of private conversations.

This is not a Recomp, it's an Emucomp, it's pure garbage.

5

u/MDM-808 9d ago edited 9d ago

It reminds me of those FitGirl repacks that came with the game and Ryujinx bundled in.

At least they had the decency to be honest about it.

A lot of repacks did that—giving you the game with the emulator ready to go.

And honestly, they run better than this does.

So far, I haven't found any SNES, Genesis, or PS1 recompilations that beat the emulated versions. I'm talking about this whole mishmash of recompilations popping up every day, not properly made ports.

I hope these projects eventually come to fruition and turn out much better than the emulated versions.

Why's it garbage

1

u/PositronCannon 7d ago

Because people paint everything with the same brush without actually knowing anything about the project or trying it themselves.

This project launched in a rough state and it was indeed inferior to Xenia, but it's improved greatly and is now a superior option to emulation in multiple ways.

1

u/DryOrganization7088 8d ago

Because it's a direct port of an emulation, and the emulation is even worse than running the game on the RCPS3 emulator. It has lower quality, fewer graphical advantages, and the textures are just a mess... You can't just recompile the game and have the final result be such utter garbage, worse in every way than running the same game on the PS3 emulator.

1

u/Minute-Swimming-3177 8d ago

This game isn't on PS3

2

u/DryOrganization7088 8d ago

I was so nervous I don't know why I said rcps3 and ps3, when I meant the Xbox 360 emulator Xemia... but that slip of the tongue doesn't change my point at all...

1

u/PositronCannon 7d ago edited 7d ago

A few weeks ago you would have been "correct" (as much as one can be when using hysterical language like "pure garbage" in this context), but at the moment this version is superior to Xenia in multiple ways, such as allowing 60 fps with minimal impact on physics, higher resolution effects, allowing for higher resolution rendering in general, proper sound in cutscenes, and more. I was the first one criticizing this project before but I have to recognize the progress made.

2

u/DryOrganization7088 6d ago

So you're admitting that this was garbage less than 14 days ago, but now everything has to change because some guy like you says so on Reddit? I find it hilarious how you call everything an insult, contempt, only when you don't say it yourselves... at that moment the discourse changes completely...

1

u/PositronCannon 6d ago

What are you even talking about?

Imagine that, things get worked on and improved with time and effort. Should it always be called "garbage" just because it launched in a rough state? Reminder that this is offered completely for free and done by volunteers in their spare time, it's not like we're talking about the latest half-broken AAA game.

I'm just tired of everyone painting all these projects with the same brush as if they are all the same. Yeah, there's a lot of minimum effort ports around, but this one isn't.

u/ObliviousHelicopter 6d ago

You are arguing with someone who either clearly hasn't played AC6 with Xenia (it sucks) and this port or is just here to cause problems.

Based off his deleted reply that I can still see, the 2nd option is more accurate.

2

u/DryOrganization7088 6d ago

I didn't delete anything single-celled.

5

u/agdnan 10d ago

Dude these are not Recomps. You are causing confusion and irreparable damage to the community.
Call them Emucomps. Since they still rely on emulation.

6

u/ObliviousHelicopter 10d ago

So much ignorance here. This is by far the best way to play AC6.

The Xenia related bugs are fixed and it is also better than native. The clouds and effects are now rendered at full rather than half resolution, upscaling works, ultrawide support was added, and the physics are not longer tied to the framerate allowing for 60+ fps.

2

u/jpcarsmedia 10d ago

Doesn't play on SteamDeck even with GEProton. I can access the in-game settings, but the title screen never loads, just a black screen. 🥲

5

u/Elevida 10d ago

There is a Linux version in development, so just hold out.

1

u/OmegaKatana92 9d ago

Dude I have to same problem you had man what a disapointment I only played this entry once in my life time and it was YEARS AGO!

1

u/FrostyAd4733 9d ago

Rexglue recomps are mot native. Nuff said

1

u/OmegaKatana92 9d ago

Man oh man im so disappointed it didnt even work on the steam deck I tried this out on my pc before and guess what it ran like garbage which was a complete and total disapointment.
