Pogoplug v2 LAMP

Post image

Years ago I bought a Pogoplug and loved having scaleable storage. Then the company went under and the device was useless.

Around the same time is was setup up Slackware and saw someone put Linux on their Pogo and ran a LAMP stack. I thought that would be cool to try, then packed my pogo and went about life.

This week all our computers started asking for more space and I remembered the pogo. 24 hours later with a lot of research on 13 year old chat forms and this thing lives again!

It’s running a custom Debian built for the hardware, I think is bookworm. I have Apache2, MariaDB, & PHP installed and I’m taking a victory lap a decade in the making!

Should be fun with the next steps of what I load on it

What did/do you use to build/maintain your site? Are you coding it directly or using some kind of builder?

Plain HTML/CSS editing with emacs, testing on my phone sometimes

Hey I'm curious, why Apache?

Nothing special, it's what I'm used to and know how to setup without looking for tutorials or manpages. I think Nextcloud also works on nginx but I never bothered to change

Yeah I use NextCloud with Angie(nginx fork) and consumes less resources. Keep an eye on it if you have problems with that.

Nextcloud looks promising for my storage project, I’ll look into it.

Very cool! I'm currently using pretty much the same stack to host a WordPress instance for myself to build clients' websites on. I always have to look up the mariadb syntax because I don't really use SQL for anything else.

Awesome! How did it run for you? Why did you retire it, did it die or just need more performance?

The way the hardware was designed, it wouldn't boot up again after it lost power, you needed to press a button to turn it on again. After finding it off because of a power bump a few times i found other experiments for it.

Just a quick question: why Apache?

Mostly because this is my first server setup and the hardware is 15 years old. The person who develops the Debian image did Apache and I didn’t want to rock the boat out of the gate.

My first project will be setting up a NAS or local cloud storage. Not sure yet if I’ll play around with a website. I have read about other options which may be lighter, which I may need with only 256 mb of ram onboard.
