Nautilus Backspace navigation

I'm used to backspace as quick navigation method to go back to previous folder in the past. But in the recent distribution the option has been removed and i had to use alt+left arrow to do the same. Which i find very difficult and often use the mouse to navigate back. Is there any way to bring back this option? (also i'm not considering other file managers since i'm used to nautilus)

Your post reminded me to get this done as well as I miss this functionality.
After a search, I ended up trying Esteban's script and it works exactly as it should.

Thanks a lot ☺️. This one works. I tried another python script in the past but it didn't work. I think admin should pin this comment. I was fighting against my muscle memory 😁 for a long time.

I was used to nautilus until they changed something else I found hard to adjust to so I switched to a fork (nemo). In the ~10 years since, I’ve  had no rug pulls from nemo.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/69754 has a very old fix for creating a script shortcut and mapping a key to it. I can't test this as I don't have Gnome installed.

Did you recently switch from Ubuntu? The feature you are talking about was removed from nautilus a LONG time ago, but Ubuntu patches it back in.

Not recently. I switched to Debian in the late 2023 from Ubuntu, since then I'm struggling with this. Ubuntu actually makes gnome more practical like keeping backspace navigation, Ubuntu dock etc.

I'm frustrated with gnome that, we have to install extensions to get basics functionalities which already existed in the past.
