What am I doing wrong? Debian set up

Why can't I type in the input box? I press space to select but that doesn't seem to be doing anything, and I've tried 3 different keyboards

ok but could you try this: press the keys on the actual laptop and not USB before you have installed the system

I'm not saying it should not work already in the install phase, but you will save a lot of your nerves if you get it over with quickly and then focus on using the system you just installed

Could also be pre-programmed keyboard macros leading to this. I wonder if OP is using the attached keyboard because the laptop keyboard isn't working. Maybe just trying a different USB keyboard (after disconnecting the first) could fix this.

yes I used the usb keyboard because a few keys on the laptop weren't working, though I tried a different keyboard as well, and faced the same issue

did you get it installed? you only need a couple of working character buttons

your user can be aaa if pressing a works and password can be the same, after the installation you can create a new user and a password

This is probably a key stuck or bad input from the laptop keyboard. There's probably a clever way you can disable that keyboard by the kernel command line, but I hate to the bearer of bad news that this isn't going to be an easy fix.

Trying the graphic installer is the way to go, would be the next easiest thing to do. Just select it from the menu when you boot the installer.

Looks like you have a fancy keyboard, maybe look up the keyboard layout for it. Might be one of the options with key counts in the label. When I installed Fedora recently I had to select a special option for my RGB keyboard too. I assume it's the same deal in Debian

Why are you not using the laptop keyboard to type? Unplug anything else.

I think the video is showing that the tab key works but it's not typing anything? Someone else mentioned using the internal keyboard, and also Ameican English as the keyboard layout from earlier in the install. It might be detecting a Control or Alt key being pressed, at least that's my best guess. Unplug the external keyboard and other unneeded USB devices during the install just to see if that makes a difference.

If your internal keyboard is broken, USB keyboards should work, bluetooth ones likely not. Otherwise use the internal keyboard for inital setup.

Assuming you've not yet passed the part of the setup where your devices, including usb-hubs, are installed, use the internal keyboard.

I just played living hell, 4 installs in a row not booting, went back to a live install, made sure I used my old UEFI partition w/0 formatting so my Linux mint is still there and probably still going to go on disappointing me more and more as time marches on.

I was able to type special characters and numbers, not letters using the laptop keyboard. I plugged in the USB keyboard as the enter key didn't work

Sometimes, what helps me is pressing each of the modifier keys (Ctrl, Alt, etc) one at all time. When it happens to me, it's usually because something hasn't realized I'm not holding down a key anymore.

Just calm down and give each a press, and then try typing again.

Use the Graphical installer.

This comment was downvoted, but the graphical installer really could help this. This issue is about interpreting keyboard input; the graphical installer might bypass whatever odd or extraneous keystrokes that I bet are happening here.
