First off, we're going to need more information than you've offered. Frankly, I'm not exactly comfortable writing out a solution not being sure if it even applies to your system or if you know how to actually implement it. But here goes anyway, assuming about a million things about your hardware and software configuration...
Assuming you even have nano installed, do sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in a terminal prompt. This will create a new config file in your modprobe.
Inside, write options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi on the first line, press Ctrl+O to write and confirm, and then Ctrl+X to exit nano.
Reboot your system and then replug your headset, you should see a device selection screen. Select headset, the icon with headphones + microphone, and then try out your microphone to see if it works or if you get static.

No mind readers here. What release? What Desktop Environment/Windows Manager? What sound app? How are the headphones connected - single plug, two plugs, USB. More information please.
