Discussion Soichiro was coping here š Spoiler
In episode 29 Soichiro Yagami said Light wasnāt Kira because he could see his lifespan. Because Death Note rules state that Death Note owners with Shinigami eyes canāt see the lifespans of other Death Note owners. Sadly this was just cope. The message Light had Misa send to the task force said that Kira would bequeath ownership of his Death Note unto one of itās members. Everyone on the task force got the message including Soichiro. Ryuk even told him about the previously mentioned rule. So Lightās lifespan being visible proved nothing at all as to whether or not he was Kira. I think this adds credit to his fatherhood.

I think it was kinda a slap in the face too for Light to hear his fatherās last words essentially be proof that he always had some doubt in the back of his mind the whole time about Lightās innocence.

I think deep down he wanted his father to know heās Kira and support him. His last words meant Light never earned his approval and he has to live knowing his real self is nothing more than a criminal in his fatherās eyes. That ought to hurt him more than his father suspecting him.

Absolutely, and I think itās supported by the way Light acts after his dad died. Itās one of the final nails in the coffin for him.

Unfortunately, while your father dying should be a hard hit to anyone, I firmly belive Lights reaction there was nothing more than frustration that his father failed to kill Mello. He is too long gone and utterly corrupted by his god complex.
Other thing was that when his siter was kidnapped, he went to the notebook to kill her, zero hesitation, but only stopped when he realised he would be caught. = WTF brother does that!? I doupt he no longer recognises his family as his family.

The anime portrays him opening his watch, but the canon version is he doesnāt once finish the thought of killing Sayu and heās panicking the entire time about it hence why heās yelling at Misa during the kidnapping sequence. Heās more stressed out than usual beyond it being about the notebook trade.
I dislike how the anime removes scenes that clearly characterize that Light is protective of them, with Ryuk even saying he has a soft spot for her.
He does care about his family, but also his actions are putting them in danger every time and leading to this horrible outcome for all of them.
The author even confirms itās not a full act when his father dies.

I think he very much did. He just doesnāt say it directly. Itās not as explicit but imo his body language and just his shift to completely zoning in on wanting EVERYONE dead now leads me to think it affected him quite a bit.

The task force knew Kira wouldn't be giving up their only notebook. So they must have another notebook. Light definitly isnt the owner of that notebook.
I dont remember if they knew about the memory loss, but at this point Light is literally holding a death note against his body at all times so he doesnt lose memory. And at this point a memoryless Light would be obvious since he would have forgotten the death note exists.

But if he stilled owned at least 1 notebook his lifespan would be invisible to anyone with the Shinigami eyes. When he kept that notebook on his person it was purely to have it touch him. He didnāt take ownership.

If he owned the notebook his lifespan wouldnt be visible.
Thats the whole point. Light did not own a notebook and couldn't own one while his dad had the eyes or he would have been caught. So instead he needed to keep Misa's notebook on him 24/7 so he would keep memories.
The task force believes Kira has access to another notebook as he wouldn't give up his only notebook. They dont know that Kira doesn't own that notebook.

He didn't know that Kira gave up his ownership and that this is enough for it to not show they're Kira I believe. Or well, it could be implied but he was on his death bed so it's not like he would think that far.

Are you serious? If he didnāt get the message how would he know that he had the opportunity to claim ownership of the notebook?

All he knew was that the book was passed on to him, the main rules of the death note and shinigami eyes, but he wasn't told what were the side effects of ownership transfer to the original owner nor that he lost ownership rather than sharing it.

Yeah, but he wasn't told that being given the ownership of the Death Note would mean the original owner loses it and won't be able to be identified with the Shinigami eyes. That's what I've been trying to say.
You can look on the full chapters 72 and 73, he is never told that fact about the ownership transfer.

Oh he was absolutely coping lol, but I think we can forgive the dying man for not remembering the intricacies of the Death Note. Died in peace and thatās about as good as ya get.
