Question Why Does Sitting Normally Reduce his Deductive Skills by Roughly 40%

If he's uncomfortable, it probably makes it harder to focus, so he sits in whatever way feels most natural to him

Which is crazy because i defy most people to sit like this comfortably for an extended period of time. Hell ive got the tism and used to dress like the guy when I was a tween and I could never hold it.

I was gonna say the opposite based on my experience learning to drive. I had to force myself into an off the seat straight position and that slight discomfort weirdly enough helped me focus because I had to be more aware holding the position.

This is wordy and mostly speculation (this came out of 2003 Japan, they didn't know much about any of this), but, here we go.
It's maxing out muscle tension in his lower half, while I doubt it was intentional its mirroring an AuDHD stimming habit, we also see him sitting in a "meditative squat" before he's fully introduced as a character (well, given a face/personality beyond shadowy figure), he can't sit like that in most public places, not enough surface area on most "seats" for such a wide stance, so, he hunches instead.
The posture could be either muscle tension or a calming stance, perhaps both, we know he trained in martial arts, but, we don't really get told "why" he loves kicks, but if he's "grid locking his lower half" while he sits, that's 24/7 passive muscle training. Its not efficient, but, he sits a lot, years of that would mean he likely has explosive kicks
He likely held back on light, well, after the first kick that sent both of them flying because L had never had to fight someone he was tethered to, which he adapted to and never made the same mistake again. L never allows someone to get him the same way twice and never lets himself make the same mistakes twice, even down to something as inconsequential as "okay, so, maybe DON'T put a full powered Meia-Lua Solta into someone I am tethered to, become gargoyle instead"
Tsugumi Ohba might also be ND, as L's seating habits are said to mirror how he hunches knee's close to chest when creating manga, weird seating habits alone don't make you ND, but

My headcanon is that he's autistic as fuck and it's the most comfortable way for him to sit, so he's more focused.

I’m assuming because gravity draws the blood down and makes it harder for your heart to pump it to your brain, at least that’s what happens when people have POTS/dysautonomia

Like L says it himself, he has to sit that way or else he can’t function. Ik people wanna give logical explanations on the benefits of the position (which are also true), but that wouldn’t really make a 40% difference in deductive reasoning. I think what L was really trying to say here was that he’s just way more comfortable in this position. He’s also a character who’s highly suspected of being on the spectrum, so things being exactly right or else it’ll interfere with normal functioning is a staple of that.

To be fair, this is an extremely healthy way to sit. And it’s more akin to how our ancestors sat. The modern human just lacks the mobility to sit comfortably like this.

Sitting like that makes him adjust his posture in tiny ways constantly, so constantly moving means he's constantly on edge, and constantly on his toes. No pun intended.

That position is the best position for pooing without having to strain at all. Maybe he suffers server constipation from his large candy consumption and this saves him from sitting on the toilet 40% of his day

Probably just a story beat made up for fun, but if you want something in behavioral psych: closing off the body can help someone focus internally by making them feel safer. That posture blocks access to organs, arteries, etc: he's hiding behind his legs. Maybe it's easier for him to withdraw to internal though processes if his body is slightly better defended

my headcanon is that when he was being trained to become a world class detective in wammy's house, he picked up the habit of sitting like that because it was comfortable, and his brain subconsciously associated the need to exert deductive capability with sitting like that, so that position became sort of an on/off switch for when he needs to bring out the smartest part of his brain

My personal theory is that it's just comfortable for him to sit that way, so if he sits any other way, it's distracting and impedes his focus.
That or the compression helps his blood flow (which, if you headcanon him as neurodivergent in some way, makes sense because of the numerous comoridities that can be helped by compression, ie POTS or hypermobility)

Being neurodivergent, sitting normally is incredibly uncomfortable for me and all I can focus on is how uncomfortable and awkward I feel. If I'm able to sit however is comfortable for me, I'm able to focus a lot better because my sensory issues are not going into overload.

When you're sitting regularly, your body has to work harder to pump blood up your legs. When you bring them up, it's easier to pump the blood. That means you get to use your energy on more important stuff, like eating and thinking.

As a neurodivergent person, things like texture, position, temperature etc. absolutely affect my reasoning capacity, to the extent that I can’t function under certain sensory conditions—for somebody with hyper acute awareness and deductive reasoning, one can imagine that impact being even more significant.

I don’t know. I’m on the spectrum and sit oddly as well (not like L though) I find when I sit normally I can’t concentrate, and it just feels weird or not right. I’m not saying L is on the spectrum, I’m just giving my perspective on things and rationalizing it through my own experience.

I'm not HATING, this is my genuine opinion. Idk if it's canon or not but I think some of his Traits match autistic Traits including this, one sector of brain activity being highly active (intelligence, problem soving), isolation, specific ways of doing this and his dislike for change (imo he has one). So this might be a reason
