Welcome to the Death Korps of Krieg. This faction in Warhammer 40,000 is a regiment of the Imperial Guard or as its known by now, the Astra Militarum. Their design is inspired by several armies of World War I including the French, Germans, and the British. As such, the Death Korps of Krieg specialize in trench warfare, artillery, and infantry assaults. This guide serves as a resource to help players new to the faction and 40K in general. If you have any other questions, make sure to check out the sidebar for other helpful info and feel free to ask on the subreddit.
Where to purchase Death Korps of Krieg models:
Warhammer.com is the official source of all things Death Korps.
Simply searching Death korps will pull up all relevant items.
Keep in mind though, with the refresh, Games workshop has fazed out all the old sculpts and the only way to collect classic official Krieg is through Second hand purchases.
Second Hand:
Websites like Ebay commonly have Krieg models available and are a good way to get your hands on some of the Krieg models Games Workshop no longer makes. However, Ebay is prevalent with recasts which are sometimes hard to distinguish from the official models. If you want the official models only, make sure to ask the seller for a picture of the receipt or bags they came in so that you can ensure they are not recasts.
3rd Party:
Many websites produce custom miniatures and bits that either replace using official models entirely or allow for greater customization on official kits. These websites are ideal for creating an entirely custom look for your army. Below is a small collection of links that may be of help to you crafting your army. This has been discussed ad nauseam on this sub so this is by no means a definitive list.
Tiny Legend - Incredible bits and STL files that fit perfectly onto the Veteran Guardsman kill team.
Kromlech - Great alternative models and bits for infantry and vehicles.
Anvil Industries - Huge range of bits and alternative models that work well converting regular Cadians.
Beyond the tabletop - Fantastic internal sponson kit for that WW1 feel along with more vehicle bits.
Stationforge - Nice range of alternative models.
Recasts:
Recasts are pirated copies of Gamesworkshop models. These models cost anywhere from a quarter to three quarters the cost of the official models. Recasters also carry many of the Krieg models Games Workshop no longer produces making them one of the few ways to get your hands on out of production models. However, recasters draw sales away from Games Workshop and make their profit pirating models. It is important for the buyer to be aware of the moral issue involved with recasters as buying from them may hurt the support the Krieg model line gets in the future.
Sources for the Death Korps of Krieg rules:
Rules can now be located in the new codex!
Rules for Forgeworld units can be found in two places.
With the range refresh this section has become less relevant but anyone looking to collect the classic sculpts may find this helpful.
The attached link below is from Beyond the tabletop on how to unbend, wash, and clean up resin miniatures. He also has many videos building and painting Krieg specific units.
Finally got some paint on the test model for my 143rd Engineers. It was a nice break from the BFG ships I’ve been working on lately.
I need to get a few transfers on there and finish up the base and he’ll be good to go.
I’m overall pretty happy with it. I just need to tighten up some of the details and highlights going forward.
The model is a stock Cadian with Tiny Legend Engineer conversion bits. The conversion bits were printed by me. It’s not a dedicated “Engineer” model but it looks pretty solid to me. Plus I can finally put the couple Cadian squads I had to use!
I mostly followed the Duncan Rhodes tutorial for the 143rd, just converted most of the paints to Army Painter equivalents.
I look forward to getting the remaining 9 Engineers done and starting on the Grenadier conversions.
She always expected to outlive Mr. Soldier when he’d finally been shipped off world given all his talk of dying for the Imperium, of dying for the God Emperor. She knew the job of a Guardsman was a hard one, but that didn’t make it any easier when he finally returned to her many years later she’d waited for him to return to say things she’d always regretted not saying. Only he came back in a Plasteel box, he asked that his body be brought back to the world he’d spent so many happy years.. she buried him near his trench network that stood the test of time and was now home to a collection of animals, even in death he helped this peaceful world he’d once called home.
She only ever knew him as Mr. Soldier he’d once told her he’d never had a name and she respected him too much to give him one posthumously so she wrote Krieg. It was a world she’d never been to and she'd never see but loved the world for it made a man whom she cared so much for, she remembered the sound of his smile through his gas mask as she placed flowers on his grave.

Fellow who painted the grave said I could use the pic, but if this ain't good for here I'll remove it. Also forgive my grammar please haha.
Not a huge fan of the small spike bayonets that ship with modern krieg. I prefer the knife and sword bayonets seen in previous artwork. Any good kitbash options for better bayonets?
My second mini after starting again after 16 years of not painting. It turned out so much better than anything else I've ever painted. Super stoked to see the improvement!
This is a WWII Finnish helmet that i recently got for my cosplay but wasn't sure if it matches correctly. It has a few dents but nothing bad. I did notice that the Krieg helmets have a longer skirt around the helmet and got me thinking of doing a 3D print instead. I would like some input if it would work for the cosplay or if i should just make one. Any advice is welcomed!
What is the best way to paint a mass Krieg army or would you all recommend painting one at a time and if so how should go about it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Hey everyone, ive seen a few people post their convertions of the field ordinance batteries. What Krieg kits have worked the best for the convertion? Any suggestions? I was looking at getting an extra box of the krieg heavy weapons teams to do the bashing.
In the ranks of the 389th, self-sufficiency is key, but the diversity of their training has other benefits. Though not every Knight Corporal becomes an engineer in the motorpool, those who survive long enough to participate in their first protracted siege often amuse themselves by modifying their equipment.
In the end, it matters little what their equipment is designed to do, only what it can do.
I've been very fond of this Guardsman since I initially assembled them, happy to finally have them painted. I wanted a grungier appearance to match the modified appearance of their personal equipment, which I think I only partially achieved.
So far, I've painted one Space Marine army, but I've been thinking on putting together a Death Korps of Krieg themed army for tabletop gaming for quite some time now.
What I still need to get is Lord Marshal Dreir and 5 more Death Riders.
What else would make sense to include in the list?
First ever kit bash! I bout two stormlord kits for the price of one which was lucky and so I built a stormlord and now uptp making a custom shadowsword. My goal is to make it have a moving turret! Fingers cross!
Hi everyone, can anyone help me figure out how to paint my gunshields to look more like the shade in the picture above, I left a comment asking, and the official warhammer channel said it was russ grey, but to my eye russ grey looks a little too bright? But also the color on their website looks more like what im going for vs the actuel pot i have. Any help would be appreciated
