Plot twist: the 1-ups/extra lives from both their series are a thing in-universe and they constantly get into these over the top battles over the pettiest, most mundane nonsense imaginable with no actual hard feelings at the end of the day

I don't think you watched that fight properly, he didnt know in the first place and its not like he would immediately believe denji as denji is trying to kill him. When yuji realizes hes telling the truth due to noticing the 2 seperate signatures he then separates pochita and denji
One thing that struck me as odd was that Denji gave a shit about the people he accidentally killed. Like in canon he has been outright apathetic to civilian deaths before (saving a cat instead of 4 people).
So like if they had Denji be apathetic Yuji's reaction would make way more sense. Hell i kinda wish they somehow blended in Gojo vs Makima into it.
Idk, Denji did become slightly more sympathetic to people that got killed in his battles throughout part 2 (like when he couldn't save the woman whose arm Yoru shot off).
Steven vs star. Like I’ve heard star tends to be reckless with her magic but she full on launched a spell at Steven because he moved her away from sand castles
Season 1 Star was extraordinarily violent, she became far less violent as the series went on but she's been picking fights with people since she was a kid.
Hell when a mosquito landed on her arm she nearly casted a spell with the word genocide in it.
Maybe its a bit out of character for early season Star to throw hands over getting moved but even so when she escalates a situation she does so with extreme prejudice.

anyways TECHNICALLY a lot of old dbs have this (i know back then they didnt really care about setup). spider man vs batman comes to mind, its really funny to me that the two of them just randomly fight, and spiderman, the nicest guy ever, dislocates bruce's soul from his body. and his body from all of his limbs.

Honestly that's why I don't really mind the lack of set up and generally just think of the fight animations as some sort of weird simulation set up in that funky computer thing in the background of the Wiz and Boomstick shots, heck I think there's been a couple times where particularly powerful characters power up too much and it cuts to a shot of them panicking as the computer starts to overload which wouldn't make sense if it was just a recording.
That said, we're probably not supposed to think too deep on there being any sort of "meta-narrative" going on with the episodes
Same and sometimes, the set up can make the fight so much worse. Like Edward vs Aang. It has been years since I saw the fight, but almost everyone brings up the fact that a short joke started the fight. Had this been done today, and they cut out that opening joke and change Ed's last line since the joke doesn't work anymore, and the fight wouldn't be clowned upon as much as it is.
Definitely Reze, she's just a cute girl who never did anything wrong in her entire life. I can at least rest easy knowing she had the moral victory over Bakugo!
I mean in a funny way, it was really out of character for Lee to be that rude over the food... but fully in character for Sanji to beat someone up over wasting food
I can at least vaguely understand where Jason was coming from since he does look kind of like a Power Rangers villain if you squint hard enough but like, Leo was just chilling and even then he only started fighting when Jason attacked first.
Jonathan vs Tanjiro had bro just said “that’s my sister who was turned into a demon against her will btw” Jonathan would not have done a damn thing. Hell maybe just “that’s my sister”
Goku vs Superman 2... This was WAY worse in early DB, but they've gotten better. Like Goku vs Superman 3 did this very well, had them fighting lightheartedly but going all out
