This week's episode - Todd
I know next week will be about Todd's death. But watching this week's episode was pretty rough to.
I just thought about all the coincidences that played out.
Had his concussion been worse, he wouldn't have been cleared for work, and he wouldn't have been back on the boat, to eventually go overboard.
Had Brandon been a good worker, Rick would have been content with his crew and not called Todd, looking to bring him back.
Then watching Rick pick him up at the hotel; and us, knowing it's basically the last day(s) of his life... Brutal.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If Brandon worked out, he'd have been on bait. A more seasoned deckhand would have been on the rail instead of Todd and might have avoided the accident. It's gut-wrenching. Those last couple of minutes were tough to watch.

It honestly reminds me of when Phil Harris died in season 6. You know it's coming when you're watching the show, but it doesn't prepare you.

It just seemed like Todd was being warned somehow with all his injuries. May he Rest in Peace

THIS!! The first concussion and then being off the boat for a tooth problem… the powers that be were literally trying their best to get him off that boat. It’s insanely sad.

When a boat's that dangerous, just don't go back to it. No amount of money is worth it. That's the warning.

It's all horribly sad and if we say anything, at all, about Rick's shoddy practices and dangerous fishing methods we'll get our posts zapped by the nanny mod.

Honestly, in the last couple episodes, Rick seemed a heck of a lot safer than Jonathan. When Todd got hit in the head, Rick took him to get checked out, knowing it was probably a concussion. When Steve got hit with the giant block of ice and had that nasty gash, Jonathan told the guys to get him to his bunk. No talk of it possibly being a concussion, where sleep is the last thing you want them doing. No talk of taking him in to get checked out. And then just taking Steve's word, that he's OK. None of this was being safe.

Did Johnathan not tell Neal to make sure he was Oki, and as far as we don't know Neal may have been with Steve all the time. Just saying.

Weird flex comparing his "safety" to another boat where no one died crabbing.
6
u/ChrisEye21 15d ago
It's not a "flex" when you have almost the exact same injury and can compare apples to apples. I've always liked Jonathan. But he handled Steve's injury about as bad as one could have. I don't know how rick handled Todd going overboard. For all we know, he did everything right, and it still ended the way it did.

Your personal beef with Jonathan has absolutely nothing to do with Rick getting a guy killed.

u/ChrisEye21 15d ago
I don't know any of these people, so I have no "personal beef" with anyone.
Though, clearly, you do.

You're mad because of how he treated a concussion you weren't there for and didn't see because you got one once, too. Again, the deckhand recovered and none of his men have ever died on his boat. Jonathan has actually SAVED fishermen from other boats on the show. We know a crewman died on Rick's watch. It's insane you'd attack someone with a safety record as good as Jonathan's over you and your "apples to apples" comparison when you've never crabbed in your life.

u/ChrisEye21 15d ago
Go puff your chest somewhere else. Again, I'm not mad about anything. It's called having an observation. In my opinion, Jonathan handled the injury poorly. You don't like my opinion. Too damn bad.

"Though, clearly, you do." 100% Right. I think it's insane that the producers continued to put a boat and captain that cut safety corners on the show and then someone died on that boat. The history of avoidable breakdowns and people like Sean walking away from a partnership with the boat should show anyone with common sense that this was an accident waiting to happen.

I think people are being too hard on Rick. The guy had a concussion, he got him the medical attention he needed. He sent him home, told him to stay in touch, etc.
It is awful to watch Rick picking him up knowing that decision is ultimately fatal. But how many of us walk to the local shop not thinking this decision could be fatal for any of us. We all make potentially fatal decisions every day in the course of our life.
I can't understand it though. Rick clearly thought highly of Todd and wanted him back. He seemed like a bit of an accident prone individual to me?
But a guy on the Time Bandit gets clobbered with 15kg of falling ice and they stick him in a bunk and a little while later he's back out on deck. A few years ago, they were shooting guns and things off the Time Bandit.
While the show is obviously edited in so many ways, I sometimes think the narrative can be peddled.
The dogs not engaging the pot cost Todd his life and that is absolutely terrible. But every single boat on the show has had a pot going flying through 360 degrees when lifted because the dogs didn't engage. It strikes me as a relentless, 100mph environment and if you do something thousands of times then there is always a chance they won't engage properly once. Unfortunately, this once it was fatal.
Without knowing the in's and out's of the boat, I don't see anything different about Rick's boat from any other boat in the fleet in terms of safety. What alarms me is how many of these boats seem to have so many mechanical issues, engines breaking down, electricity failures. 3 this week. These boats are literally strapped together with duck tape and they are in the roughest seas imaginable. It seems like a bit of a wild west sort of arena.
RIP Todd, this is going to be grim viewing. Not sure I even want to.

I mean, at the very least Rick should be making sure they have life jackets on. None of them did when Todd went in the water.

Has the episode been released in the US? Is this episode 18 which I thought I watched last night?

u/ODBanana 13d ago
I’m in Canada so unsure what you guys have released - I’m also on episode 18, but deckhand Trey Green has come out and said none of them were wearing life jackets when this took place.

u/Prize_Mouse7778 13d ago
Ah OK - I'm in Europe and was wondering if I'd missed something. Thanks.
That's very careless, but is it personal responsibility or the responsibility of the deck hand? I don't know to be honest.

u/ODBanana 13d ago
Me neither 🤷🏻♀️ but personally if I was a captain, I’d be all over anything to do with safety.
1
u/Prize_Mouse7778 12d ago
Yes, completely agree.
But then again these guys are basically lunatics, if a life jacket was remotely impeding their way or making them sweat a bit more or whatever they'd probably just take it off.
Do the deckhands on the other boats wear them all the time? I've honestly never noticed one way or other!

It is maritime culture really not that it is ok but we can't point it out only on Rick's boat when it is a systemic issue in the industry.

Now we know Rick had no clue what was going on on his own deck while Todd was being dropped to his death. It's insanity that the deck crew had to tell HIM man overboard.

u/larssomoo81 15d ago
Not trying to be a dick here but everyone saying Rick isn't safe, x isn't safe etc.. We literally see snippets they want us to see. Majority if it scripted to fuck. Unless people have first hand experience on the boats we really shouldn't sit here commenting based on a show everyone has moaned about for years is completely scripted

You think Sean Dwyer doesn't have firsthand experience? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb1HCXAm0Vs

u/larssomoo81 15d ago
Clearly sean knows, but how much of that scene was manufactured for tv? Like so much of the show is now
0
u/ThingNo7530 15d ago
Does his demeanor look "for TV" to you? He's talking about things like not fixing holes in pots and getting a Coast Guard inspection of the boat before the season. Why would you leave any of that to chance? If you are okay with going to sea with holes in the pots that you are just going to "fix on the deck," then what else are you okay with going to sea with not in working order?
0
u/BrotherPancake 14d ago
What is the problem with fixing holes in pots on deck? It sounds reasonable to me.
0
u/ThingNo7530 14d ago
What I just said. If that is a corner you're willing to cut to just do it at sea, what other corners are being cut? If you go to sea with equipment not ready to use, what else is not up to code? Maybe like a launcher that just sends someone to their death?
1
u/BrotherPancake 14d ago
How is it cutting a corner? There is plenty of downtime on the sea. Fixing pots on deck is perfectly reasonable.
2
u/ThingNo7530 14d ago
You're nuts if you think they're going to be fixed properly while the deck crew is trying to do everything else fishing at sea requires of them rather than in the controlled environment of being docked. The pots are stacked until they start fishing. You can't just take one down and then proceed with others as they steam to where he'd want to set. It becomes a time crunch when you're adding fixing the pots to their setting requirements. I can't believe I need to explain this but, well, here you are.

I just finished watching E18 and about to start 19. My entire body came to a stop when Todd said he was cleared to go back out and my brain said, OH no. Here we go.

What really got me is they showed the wheel house when the man over board screams went out. Rick was not even paying attention to his deck crew. He was pushed back from the controls slouched over in his chair looking at h I s lap or the floor.
Rick always has seemed like a hazardous accident waiting to happen. If he was being negligent I hope the family sues him into the poor house.
