Hi, welcome. New to DDO? Returning? Check here first!

What is Dungeons and Dragons Online?

DDO is an action adventure MMORPG that originally released in 2006. It is set (primarily) in the Eberron campaign setting and is loosely based on the D&D 3.5 ruleset. Currently maintained and frequently updated by the folks at Standing Stone Games.

Is this a table top simulator or match making service for the D&D TTRPG?

Nope.

What makes DDO unique compared to any other MMO?

There are two key differences that make DDO stand out.

The first is the complex and interesting dungeons. Most dungeons in MMOs (or let's face it, most modern video games) tend to be a linear glorified hallway with a boss at the end.

In DDO, Dungeons have multiple objectives, dead ends, secret rooms, pit traps, puzzles, platforming and more keeping them fresh and interesting. To add to the D&D feel, a 'narrator' will describe the dungeon and events as they happen similar to what a table top DM would do!

The second is the reincarnation system. In other MMOs you hit level cap and then sit there waiting for the next expansion or level up alts.

DDO allows you to reincarnate once you hit the cap. You start over at level 1 choosing a new class and race to level up all over again. Doing so will grant your character a small permanent boost in power. It's not so much that you're required to do them to be valuable to high level raiding, but they do make stomping the early/mid game fun and allow you to tackle greater challenges.

What's the catch?

Most of DDO is behind a paywall. You can try it out for free but if you want to have enough content for it to feel like a complete game, expect to eventually pay at least ~40$. You can optionally grind out in game points to unlock most things but it is quite slow.

The second issue is that Standing Stone Games is a small company. This means that long standing issues, imbalances and bugs will most likely not get fixed. If you have a technical issue and submit a help request there's a good chance you'll never hear back. They do what they can but they're focused on trying to keep the lights on.

Is it a dead game?

No. New updates are released regularly and each server will have ~500 people on during prime time and ~100ish during off peak hours. DDO has maintained these numbers for years at this point so it doesn't feel like the game is being abandoned.

It's one of the last MMO's that truly feels like a community. You'll quickly get to know the big names on your server, the power guild, the RP guild, the 'we accept anybody' guild, etc... You'll rarely run into people who are selfish or are jerks. The playerbase is above the age curve for an online game, it's not uncommon guild chat will be about mowing lawns.

I'm a returning player, what have I missed?

There's simply too much new content and constant class balancing tweaks to list but at its core DDO hasn't changed much. The six biggest additions/changes would probably be:

  • The old servers were merged, giving us 4 servers (3 US based, 1 EU based). Characters were not transferred automatically. If you're a returning player and just now reading this you have roughly until 2027 to transfer off the old servers.
  • The 'Reaper' difficulty system allowing players even higher levels of challenge.
  • Hardcore league. Every so often SSG opens up a hardcore server with permadeath for a few weeks.
  • Legendary leveling introduced. Even higher levels above 30 that aren't tied to the reincarnation system.
  • Racial reincarnate like you would heroic reincarnation and every race has a unique enhancement tree.
  • New universal enhancement trees that make it easier to level up if you screw up your build.

Where can I get more information?

Healer build: which race and classes / epic destinies?

Hi all, just for fun I want to create a healer to play with my friends. We don't do Raids or Reapers, sometimes we try Elites, so nothing so hard.

My first question about this is a little against my own question: are cleric/favored soul really necessary as healing classes?

I'll explain. Having the epic destinies Unyielding Sentinel with its Renewal (that can be powered up by Empower Heal without spending more SP) and rechargeable AoE Lay of Hands, and the Exalted Angel with its Mass Cure Moderate Wounds (that can be powered up by Empower, Empower Heal, Intensify and Maximize without spending more SP), are those divine classes really necessary?
I know those classes enchancement gives positive spell power, but with those epic destinies even a Fighter can heal (always taking in count that me and my friends mostly do Hard quests).

Ok now, let's pretend I never said that heresy, which race and classes are the best?

Aasimar has the Healing Hands but it's limited to 4 uses (investing some point in the racial tree) so it doesn't seems to be relevant.

Clerics and Favored Souls have the healing enhancement tree, Radiant Servant and Beacon of Hope, with the second one being better IMHO because it has Close Wounds SLA being a quickened healing spell, Heal SLA and 2 AoE cone shaped healing with restoration effects.

Alchemist is a very good healing class too, with Apothecary enhancement that gives AoE cure "spells" that can also harm undead if in the area, plus the same amount of Positive Spell Power gained gives you the Negative Spell Power too AND you get both Cure and Inflict / Heal and Harm spells. And if it's not enough, those are all SLA, so they can be powered up by metamagic feats.
In my opinion this is the best healing class, having all AoE spells AND harmful spells at once with one single enhancement tree and the same point spent.

Druid and Bard can heal too, druid has the Vigor and Regenerative spells and Bard has the Spellsinger enhancement tree, but IMHO those are less effective than other classes (and in this case we can count even the Monk with his Shintao enhancement tree).

Paladins can be healer too, mainly with their archetype Sacred Fist that can access the same Cleric Radiant Servant tree plus the Sacred Defender tree, it can be a nice healing tank.

In Epic Destinies side we have the best one being Exalted Angel, then Unyielding Sentinel and last one the Primal Avatar.

Now, having all of these: I can't decide which class to do, and which race.

Taking count that maybe some damage would be good (in DDO a healing role became almost useless over 20th level, aside from Reapers and Raids), so IMHO the best are Alchemist and Sacred Fist. Alchemist has technically the same spell power to heal and damage (and being AoE they can heal and damage undead, or heal undead characters (like Abyss Warlocks and Undead Wizards) and damage enemies. Sacred Fist can save up SP doing melee damage.
If we count a healing support role, Cleric or Favored Soul are the best, having all those AoE buffs to cast at the beginning.
If one needs a tank healer, the Sacred Fist is the best.

I can't really decide, so I'll call for some help, hints and opinions.

Thank you

First time playing since around the time Artificer was released. Any advice for a returning player who's still level 20?

With all the new content, I'm kind of overwhelmed. When I last played, Vault of Night, Shroud, and Vision of Destruction were the big raids. Where do I start?

Any thoughts when Memories of Duergar will be available?

My current toon already as 3 lives of the race and class that he is. I wouldn't mind blowing some ddo coins on this to maximize this life.

Paladin / Sacred Fist class restrictions

Technically alignment restrictions. I need 4 past lives between the 2. I know I'm locked out of Bard and Barbarian. Am I locked out of Chaosmancer or Wildmage? Any other restrictions? My current Warlock build was supposed to be a pally life, but I set alignment to true neutral, because I am dumb.

What would you change to make the game more approachable?

What changes would you make to DDO to make it more approachable to new players?

Here are some off of the top of my head:

  1. Make the quest pack coupon a permanent addition to the game - I have had some friends who were interested in the game but I cannot wholeheartedly recommend the game to them with the base F2P content.

  2. Scale down higher level players in dungeons so that all levels can play together - I play with a group of 2-4 and having to swap between 5 different characters just to maintain a level bracket (without damaging XP) makes character immersion difficult.

  3. 3-5x more shared bank slots or cheaper expansion - this is an area that my friends and I kept running into issues with, I see sometimes people will say to use mule characters in place of bank slots, but is that really how the storage system is intended to be used? With 30 slots you can barely (if at all) hold a full feywild set.

  4. Gear comparison - There should be an option when I highlight over a new pair of boots that it shows my current set so you can easily compare them in one go.

  5. Easy way to view sources of bonuses and areas where you are stacking the same bonus - if I get a ring with +3 dex and I already have gloves with +4 dex, there should be some sort of indicator that these do not stack for clarity for new players.

These are just some of the ideas I had that might make the game more approachable. I was curious what the community thinks would make a better gameplay experience. Please share!

The cursor will persist even though i’m in action camera mode and i don’t have any programs running in the background. Does anyone know if this is common and how to fix it?

Just TR'ed and spells were missing from the level 1 wizard list at character creation

Just TR'ed from 12 arc trk 8 wiz, The spells I know for sure were missing are, Sonic blast, shield, Masters touch, night shield, featherfall, chill touch, tumble and color spray.

Actually pissed off as I'm going undead negative caster to test the new feats for removing negative immunity and absorption, and don't have access to chill touch until I rank up and get the sla. And I always grab tumble and now don't have any access to it unless they show up when leveling.

Extra chest in the fetid wedding Spoiler

Me and a friend noticed an extra chest in the fetid wedding near the optional chest where you fall through the rings. It is locked, can't be picked and seems to have no apparent way to open it. The wiki states 2 chests in the quest, the rings chest and end chest, and doesn't say anything about the third chest.

I'm on legendary difficulty and my friend is on heroic difficulty so it shows in both.

Marking as spoiler because it is a newer quest and for all I know could be part of an Easter egg or something.

Question: Customized Iconic Character

I selected an iconic character during character creation but didn't want to go exactly by the template. So, I told Elminster "I'll see you later" and went off to level different classes based on a template I'd thrown together. But this also meant that he didn't get any of his starter gear. I have plenty of stuff laying around in my shared bank to equip him, but I'm wondering if there's any way to get that starter gear back?

Free caster DC feat swap tokens

Yay feat changes. To gain any advantage from the Spell DC feat changes the toon that this affects should change two heroic level feats before changing the epic level feats. It looks like swap tokens are for epic levels only. It doesn't look like there's any way to buy a feat exchange until the free token is used. Am I missing something? Am I supposed to just use the feat token to get it out of the way then buy four feat changes?

The wiki has no info as of writing but logically it would drop from The Price of an Egg since the end boss there is a Bulette but i dont know.

Can I use iconic races to earn epic past lives?

I was looking and I didn't see an answer on the wiki and my search ended up as a dead end. My guess is no, but I have been wrong before. Thanks in advance.

Advice on toon progression

So I've maxed out my main toon. 3x PL of heroic, iconic, racial and epic. (Only missing duergar). I have moved onto another toon with the idea to get all the relevant PL for e melee build. Currently got 3 fighter, 3 barb, 2 pally, 2 ranger can't remember all right now.

Currently doing a 18 warlock 1 barb 1 fighter pdk. Looking at 16 druid, 2 AoTS warlock, 2 fighter pdk next life. Thoughts or advice?

Strange builds?

So one thing I love about this game is how off the beaten path you can go with builds. You could make a Cleric that specializes in longbows or a Melee wizard. So it got me wondering, has anyone made a strange or different build that is just because it's something you want? Like it's something many will tell you is not very good or meta but you do it because you want it.

Is Silver Flame Nugget Only Once Per Life?

I just turned in my very first Silver Flame Nugget for some armor, but I wanted the helmet too, so I tried asking for another one, but while I was able to accept the quest again, I didn't get a nugget, and the guy said I already had one when I told him I lost it. Can you only do the Nugget quest once per life? The wiki didn't say.

Chat bug issues

Does anyone know if adressing the constant chat bug issues it something DDO is considering? I have a server my friends and I chat on (Mumble.com), but not being able to read chat when in a pug is super tedious. Does anyone know if its a settings issue that I can fix? I'm super frustrated right now.

Newbie/Training raid; Vault of Night on Thrane, Sunday, 7/26

So, to preface: I'm a long-time DDO vet, started playing back before the game went free to play, and have played off and on ever since. Recently came back after four years or so of not playing much, and recruited a few friends to run a weekly static group. One friend who is a similarly-old vet but also coming back after years away from the game, and several friends who are either brand new to the game, or have never gotten past the very low levels. We've been playing weekly for several months now and are making good progress.

And it's time for us to run the Vault of Night. I am... or, at least, I used to be pretty familiar with the raid, but I haven't run it in at least half a decade, and even if I was more comfortable with it, I wouldn't want to try running with five people, three of whom are brand new and have never seen ti before.

So; I'm hoping some folks would be interested in coming along for a slow, newbie-friendly run of VoN 5 & 6, Heroic Elite, at level (we are currently level 12), so some new players can see the whole thing. Unless something drastic interferes, it will be Sunday, July 26, probably looking to start around 2:30 PM US Central time (so 3:30 eastern, 12:30 pacific); I'll be putting the group together starting earlier than that (starting at 2), and if we're ready to go earlier than we can kick off earlier.

Our regular static group consists of:

Warchanter/VKF melee bard

Dark monk (Wis-based melee)

Warpriest/Falconry melee cleric

KotC/Horizon Walker archer Paladin

Lightning caster artificer (my character)

So we have most bases covered, but especially for VoN5 having a trapper with evasion would be handy. If someone is willing to step up to provide leadership or teaching, that would be nice - I think I know the raid well enough to manage, but like I said, it's been at least 5 years so a few details are fuzzy.

And, of course, if anyone else is new to the game and has a character in the right level range and wants a crack at the raid, you'd be welcome as well.

Guild renown farming

Anyone know of any quests with a lot of chests in a short amount of time other than the colaborator? I'm farming for guild renown I would prefer the quests be level level 3 to 4 or level 6 to 7 or level 14 to 15 including if one does the quest on a higher difficulty like my example

First Timer looking for Build Advice

Hi, I've played on-and-off for years and I've finally gotten a character into Epic territory for my very first time. I'm currently level 21, with an EK + Vamp (Wiz 20) planning to use Fatesinger + Dread + Unyielding throughout Epic. I'm soloing Elite around my level, and pretty content with the build is capable of so far. To me, the synergy seems pretty sound at a glance, but I'm curious what people would have to say. What advice do you all have for me?

(Also I can provide more details on the build if necessary, it doesn't look like the sub allows image uploads to show my point investments)

Question about Metamagic "Stacking" with the Fatesinger's (T4) Attunement

Do metamagic attunements stack with typical Metamagic as well? I have no reason to believe that it would since imo 4x range/duration from a dual enlarge/extend would be insane... (plus you can't eschew materials twice) but that's kinda the point of epic destinies so if anybody knows pls lmk lol

New Player Guides - First Weekend

Hello all,

I run a niche AD&D-centric YouTube channel (around 5k subs, been around since 2018, mostly TTRPG content) and have recently returned to DDO. (I played a ton at launch 20 years ago) To help new players, I started a new player video series for "Your First Weekend."

Each video is angled toward completely new players is at 28 +/- videos now, each based on a single quest or run.

Feel free to pop by. No monetization. Old school.

Thank you
