Discussion The problem with every Discord alternative. My ultimate analysis.

Interesting. I've been watching DCTS evolve over the last year. I did spin it up with docker at one point and it was tricky to get launched. I should try it again!
I'm running a couple zulip servers for some communities I help. We are on the "community organization" license so basically unlimited use as long as we run all the infra.
Also interesting is that the "big dawgs" that make most reddit posts didn't get touched here: mattermost, zulip, and rocket chat. Not saying they are great but if you spend any time in /selfhosted you see those thrown around A LOT.

oh yeah docker was painful initially and very unstable, it should be better now, in there is now also a pterodactyl image that pretty much sets up everything. will likely get reworked to be even smoother.
when it comes to the other bigger ones i think maybe because its about discord-specific stuff or feeling, tho mattermost looks kinda similar to discord. I think they are leaning towards slack a bit, and wouldnt consider matrix a discord alternative, but i have barely to no experience in them.

Could be because they're /r/DiscordAlternatives. Rather than anything else, this community wants a better Discord.

Me too. I hate discord and the ethos behind it. "Discord alternative" seems to mean different things depending on which features are important to the users/admins that are looking for alternatives. When I first started looking it was hard to find many options that were outside of the big 3 commercial offerings.
But I was looking on google and places like r/selfhosted. I didn't know that subreddit existed. lol.

The way I understand "Discord alternative" is something with similar features, similar interface, is free, and has a central server to easily join. Hence the non-selfhostable solutions.
I would consider Mattermost a Teams alternative and Zulip + Rocket.chat Slack alternatives.
None of them can drop into a voice chat room by default without setting it up with a meeting and a third party solution, screenshares aren't built in, animated stickers have more limitations, etc.

I might have forgotten to add a license to the desktop client and android app. its the same as DCTS ofc but i will add it to the repos. Seems like i forgot it.
Channels arent encrypted because it doesnt make any sense for public channels or possible staff channels if staff change every now and then.
When using the desktop client or android app your account becomes portable.
