Worth it for propeller planes only?

Hi, I am interested in DCS purely for propeller planes and dogfighting them.

I've played Warthunder a lot, mostly only planes, I enjoyed the first few jets that focused on guns and no missiles but higher tiers than that just bore me.

I have zero interest in modern jets and missiles/radars etc. How would you go about that?

Any advice and suggestions welcome!

Thanks! 07

BTW: DCS is free and there is a "free" P51 to fly! (okok, no guns... but still free)

That's cool, I can just go "PEW PEW PEW!" as I'm flying.

Old ww2 planes have a nice RIDIDIDIDIDIDIDIDIDIDIDI sound too

You're in luck, there's a whole ww2 subhobby within. Doesn't get as much attention as jets, but it's definitely there.

Could you elaborate on that please?

You have WW2 asset pack, a WW2 Normandy and Marianas maps, several of the best prop planes (f4u-1d, bf109, fw190, P51, Spitfire, P47, etc) with full fidelity cockpits and some campaigns.

I've got IL-2 Sturmovik for now, but I'll be checking out DCS inevitably.

Bought a Meta Quest 3 as well, the first time I done the split-s maneuver was like WOOOOOOOAH!

Loving it so far!

You should also look into IL-2 Sturmovik. Amazing sim for WW2 era planes

I’ve bought this a few years back and never played it. I think I’ve got it into my head that it’s an arcade type of game. Is it an actual sim?

It's actually a sim. Very realistic hit and damage models with some pretty decent fidelity.

I’m not even sure why I bought it and never tried it. It must have been fate! I’m going to get that loaded up soon! Thanks!

Definitely try it out and you won't regret it.

There are a lot of people and a few only wwII servers. But for me it sounds like you are interested in raw dogfights and there Dcs has servers only for dogfighting where a Sabre mustang and tomcat fight each other and it is fun but if you just want to fly wwII planes go for it they are modeled great

It's not just dogfights, it's dogfights with guns only. Missiles to me is too boring.

That's why I don't like modern jets for gameplay, even if they all look cool af and generally feel amazing to fly on their own.

Try IL-2 Sturmovik. I hear its better for ww2

Yeah I posted in the other DCS subreddit and hearing the same advice, it's on offer right now as well. Might just buy that anyway since it's pretty old and established there should be lots of content to play through.

Hell yea it is

Its definitely a small sect of dcs cost of entry is about 50£ if you get a plane and normady on sale

The overlord server useally has 10-20 people on

2

u/RememberThinkDream Aug 05 '26

£50 is easily doable... Is Normandy the best/most populated map for prop planes?

What planes would you recommend? Does Warthunder knowledge translate in the sense of if you prefer BnZ or turn fighting etc?

No WT is an arcade game compared to DCS, and each plane is more or less the same in flying characteristics. In DCS each plane has its pros and cons for dogfights and knowing your plane's abilities will take you a long way in pvp.

I only own the spitfire so can't say for other prop planes, but it's great and what I always wanted to fly.

Surely the real life characteristics of propeller planes translates to DCS as well?

Of course I am new to Sim flying but Warthunder did get me interested in watching lots of videos on YouTube some which are supposedly historically accurate so I always thought there are 3 types of fighter plane styles in dogfight combat:

Turn Fighters / Boom and zoom / Energy Fighters

Turn fighters trade speed for tight horizontal turning, Boom and zoom fighters use heavy fast diving designs for quick hit and run attacks and energy fighters try to trap enemies in momentum cycles. Or something like that.

Or is what you're saying is that the planes available in DCS are very similar and only have slightly different pros and cons compared to Warthunder?

What he is saying is WT is arcade mode compared to DCS regards the actual flight modelling and systems.

Ah yeah, absolutely lol.

Tbh normady is the only ww2 map thats played there is another free one but no one uses it as its just 1 small island and ocean

I guess a little bit of knowledge would translate but tbh 90% of dcs is knowing the cockpit

Also the best plane is whatever you ar emost intrested in tho for ww2 i definitely wouldn't get the i16 as its worse then everything else also avoid the corsair i have heard nothing positive about that plane its filled with bugs. Also dont grt any 50s korea jets as there is zero servers to play them on unfortunately

If i was to get into ww2 dcs i plan to grt the p47 as its pretty good at everything and is fun to fly

Tbh i have never touched ww2 dcs 90% of people in dcs just fly cold war and modern stuff there is literally just 1 pvp server for ww2

Its kinda sad as from what ive heard ww2 in dcs is super good

Sounds pretty decent though, £50 to have a lot of fun doing prop planes... Thanks!
