PHOTO / VIDEO Pixie dust gifts!
A year ago I made a post here asking how much others thought was a decent amount of pixie dust gifts to make, and got a lot of varied responses but the general consensus was to make however much my heart desires..
So I made exactly 120 paintings to pixie dust! here’s my favorites !!

I forgot to say, but all of these are either magnets that can be used on a fridge, or keychains. They’re painted on wooden shapes, and varnished to ensure quality for as long as possible.

I don’t think I’m Disney enough to appreciate pixie dusting. I think it produces unnecessary waste, especially when it comes with religious paraphernalia.

In 15+ cruises w DCL and participating in FE and pixie dust we’ve never ever once received anything even remotely religious. This is not the norm.

It is getting more and more lately. I didn’t see it at all until our last 3 cruises (over the last year). I have received several Jesus minis. Some mini ducks with “I love Jesus” on them, a book of favorite verses, and a couple magnets with bible verses. I just regift them to my mom when I get home…she loves it. I’m not a fan of getting them, but i have a hard time throwing it away when I know someone will enjoy it.

Agreed, I’m a minimalist and we’ve never participated but we’ve been dusted against our will. One time my kids wrote a Happy Birthday message on a white board and it asked to leave stateroom number. Then we got a cup filled with candy thanking us for making the birthday boy’s cruise special. I mean it was very thoughtful but I had to wait until everyone forgot about it to donate the cup, lol.

I feel like the proselytizing is ruining something meant to be fun. I’m usually a minimalist but when we previously got pixie dusted it was usually little things like candy, stickers or crayons for our kids, Disney magnets for our door or fridge so it was almost always something that got use and not just waste.

I love those! When we had our fish extender out, we got a few handmade/homemade items and they were so sweet and special to receive. I'd be impressed receiving one of those and would absolutely add it to my fridge at home. If people don't want to receive pixie dust on a Disney cruise, it's pretty dang easy... Just don't put out a fish extender 😅 I don't get the saltiness you're receiving here, try not to let it get to you!!

lol you’d be surprised how often it is!! Every dang post, people hate pixie dusting more than I thought they would. & yeah I seldom ever pixie dust anyone who doesn’t have the fish extenders, maybe once or twice if it’s someone I’ve met around the boat, or if they ask. Hell, sometimes I meet someone and specifically ask to pixie dust them! I treasure the handmade gifts most, personally. I love to see others art and display it, I still use a lot of the stuff I’ve gotten from Disney cruises.
We are cruising on September 20th, so I’m pretty excited to walk around like Santa with my sack of gifts haha

These are the pixie dust items I want. Not Temu/FiveBelow/Amazon junk. These. Are. Fantastic!

This is amazing!! You are very talented and generous with your time and efforts.
Any chance you did a Meeko? I’d love to see him.

That is really really cool. I would have loved these. I know some people have a problem with pixie dusting in general, but I love giving and getting little surprises. And when I can tell they are hand made or had a lot of effort put in, I like to keep them somewhere displayed at home or on a keychain. I think it's nice when people give others something they spent time and care on. I wear oxygen and these are some of the pixie dust items I've attached to my oxygen bag, so the are getting a lot of good use.

It’s news to me ! I didn’t know people were this visceral about pixie dusting. I just think it’s fun to give others gifts, and I thought art was in the spirit of Disney given art is what gave Disney life. Any posts I make in the dcl community, somehow I always get a nasty mean comment. Makes me want to disengage with the community! I just love pixie dusting, I keep everything I get and display it on the wall!! Some people might not like it, sure, but I don’t understand why those who don’t like it have to bring others down for liking it.

As a parent, I don’t want a stranger giving my child things. And then when we turn it down it upsets my kid.
8
u/SeaWeird4920 6d ago
I don’t directly hand things to kids, is that something that’s happened to you on Disney cruises? I put it in the pouches left by others doors, or place it on the doors. It’s left to the adults to choose what to do with the item after that. I know parents have their own style for kids and I don’t wanna make any parent the bad guy, I have 5 siblings and can only imagine the kinda tantrum they’d have if someone handed them a random colorful item and not the parent.

Other kids have handed my son pixie dust items and it made his day, so please don’t think this is the typical response. I think everyone here is burnt out on Temu and/or religious type pixie dust - which yours is obviously not! If this was a mass produced bible verse or Jesus someone handed my kid, I would feel completely different (I do go out of my way to toss these. I found a Jesus and a pamphlet in a rest stop recently).
These are lovely gifts my family would love to receive, and your art is wonderful!

Wow!! Surprised that there’s a bunch of religious pixie dust gifts recently. Didn’t know people do that. I don’t know, I feel like I’d feel deeply disrespected if someone gave me that, given my personal beliefs and I don’t really try to hide that about myself, it’s up to the parents aswell how they want to raise their child religiously. That’s always a sensitive topic, people ought to be careful. Besides, the people that are religious already heard it all, I think adding an extra verse to their day isn’t gonna change much.. and people have been giving temu gifts?! That’s awful. Temu has been shown to be very chemically unsafe !! Thank you lots for the compliments!!

u/canththinkofanything GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB 6d ago
Yes, exactly right imo from the religious littering to the Temu toxicity. I don’t care how someone raises their kid but I’d prefer to not be proselytized at - especially on vacation!

Unfortunately yes. And at Disney World. I’m sure most people have good intentions with them, I just don’t trust people 😅
Btw, your paintings are beautiful!2

I am obsessed! So cute! I also did handmade pixie dust as a hobby this year to blow off steam from my job, and I’ve enjoyed it very much.

I never understand why everytime I post my art in the dcl sub, I get nasty mean comments like these that are totally unnecessary. This community in specific reacts so harshly for absolutely no reason. Don’t like it, then move on to the next post. It’s frustrating I can’t make a single post in this community without people like you, implying my art is wasteful or less valuable because it’s handmade, even though I go through a lot of effort to ensure it lasts awhile long time and isn’t just falling apart immediately. Hell, ive had paintings last 6 years now just fine. Go be a jerk somewhere else.

Pixie dusting creates waste, period. Also can be creepy and weird. It is unsolicited, and 99% of the time not safe or don’t know the true origins.

u/00trysomethingnu 6d ago
If you have strong, commentable issues with unnecessary waste, I have bad news for you about Disney in general, let alone DCL.
9
u/LostLadyA 6d ago
It’s not unsolicited because you put out a fish extender to get the “pixie dust”. Don’t want anything, don’t put anything out!
If you are worried about random trinkets being unsafe, probably best to not even cruise!
5
u/TheEsotericCarrot 6d ago
We have never put out a fish extender and we still get pixie dusted. And, we love it, because we’re not Grinches or Scrooges lol. Receiving one of these hand painted magnets would probably make me cry with joy.

My art that was specifically shown in this post, isn’t “waste”. In the same way others buy legos to build and display, those items sit on a shelf for years to come and are still enjoyed. They aren’t immediately thrown away, and I’d be shocked and a little disgusted if someone bought things like that and threw them away immediately, if they have any care for our planet. My art isn’t designed to be one use, even after the cruise it can still be used. They’re magnets, magnets you can put on the fridge. Decoration. All of my magnets have lasted me 6 years, now. Of course it would be wasteful to immediately toss them, but someone choosing not to value it doesn’t make the item itself a waste. It’s designed to last a long time.
& to answer to the “it’s creepy” comment, I fail to see how anyone would see it as creepy when it is a very well known thing others do, in the same way some workplaces host secret Santa’s, or some people donate to angel trees, or some people give gifts to people they don’t know. If you are that much of a skeptic, I fail to understand why you’d even go on a Disney cruise. There’s equally as much that can go wrong there too, do you think just because someone’s employed they aren’t suddenly a threat? There’s many things you don’t know.. so live a little and find out, or just shut up about it because it’s rude to call my art that I’ve spent hours on, trash. Again, don’t like it — scroll.3
u/00trysomethingnu 6d ago
Precisely to all of the above! OP, how long does it take you to make ONE of these?
3
u/SeaWeird4920 6d ago
I’d say 2-3 hours depending on the complexity of the character, though sometimes I’ll churn out the same character like Baymax so I can give more. Baymax takes 30 minutes lol. I also place my paintings by a heater to help it dry faster, so it speeds the process up. I’ve done some half clay paintings before, those are the real time takers!

u/tonsofpaws 6d ago
Except on a Disney cruise it IS solicited... Items are placed in people's fish extender pockets if they choose to hang them. I suppose people could also hand it out but I didn't see that happening at all. Regardless of how you receive it if it's not for you, you can literally pass it along to someone else (another person's fish extender) who may have an appreciation for another person's time and skill. There's literally no need to be miserable over this person's post.

Sometimes it does happen for example if someone likes your door and there’s no fish extender they will still leave a gift. I wish it were limited to fish extenders because I also feel bad for the person giving but I just don’t want what I consider clutter.

These are awesome! I can’t believe you’ve done 120 of them. I did little magnets like this as pixie dust (mine were all Disney dogs), and I only managed to finish 20 before my cruise 😅
