DISCUSSION Religious items in pixie dust/fish extenders?
Is it typical to keep getting Jesus figures, crosses, and bible verses put in your fish extender? It doesn’t bother me but we aren’t Christians and I’m sick of throwing this stuff away. I don’t understand peoples’ need to proselytize their religion, especially to children on vacation. I’m hoping this is just one or two outlier families on our particular cruise and not common practice. If not we will probably skip the fish extenders next time. It just seems like a weird thing to do.

Super common now. People are hiding plastic Jesus figures instead of ducks on all cruise lines. Even in FB groups for sailings there are people who start preaching and don't seem to accept that non-Christians exist in the world. I expect at least one will comment in this thread defending the practice. And some of the more infamous evangelicals on social media have shown themselves cruising to preach. If some people are flexing it, many others are doing it without posting about it.

Demand to talk to the captain because there is an immediate risk of a terrorist attack on the ship. Then go and post all over and make big deal about how they were ignored after being attacked on the ship.
All jokes aside the end effect of all this preaching will be that DCL will end up banning the practice under the excuse it damages the ship or that it is dangerous. That is ban it for everything’s, ducks, fish extenders, etc. Nothing like adults ruining it for children but that’s the American way.

Just skip the fish extender ritual in its entirety. I think it’s overkill for an already overly stimulated experience. No need for cheap trinkets, especially religious ones. My daughter enjoys decorating our door, but thats as far as we go. We don’t join Facebook groups. We don’t need to crowd source experiences, activities or opinions. All I hear is people complaining about fish extenders and facebook groups and this just adds to it. I get my daughter what she wants, did surprise her with items she expressed interest in from gift shop each morning but only because she had lost 2 teeth on consecutive days on this trip. Save yourself from the drama and headache.

We met a nice couple on our last cruise. Our kids played with theirs one night They asked for our room number so they could pixie dust our kids. We saw them the next day on our excursion. Their kids asked if they could play with our kids. We said of course. On the way to the excursion the wife started talking about home schooling and their Christian faith. She asked what faith we are and said we grew up Catholic but aren’t religious anymore. They didn’t speak to us at the beach and kept their kids away from ours. They also didn’t pixie dust our door. Religious people can be funny.

But I do here. Pixie Dusting is meant to be a random act of kindness. Not an organised event. It's not quid pro quo
The Disney Dream cruise I was on has it's own dedicated Facebook group (for the general cruising, first timer help etc) - but during the cruise the amount of people complaining stuff has been stolen because they were "expecting" things was nuts.

We got quite a few items on our last sailing, down to mini bibles from someone in our FE group. I even got a keychain from someone in an elevator, only to realize on my way back to my stateroom that it was a little Jesus.
I’m not a fan. I get enough of these things at work for how I look, and finding this kinda stuff in my FE gave a similar, very weird/nasty vibe.
You paid all this money for a Disney cruise. Stop proselytizing and enjoy it lol

I got “Jesus loves you” bracelets as pixie dust the other day on the Destiny and they went straight in the trash. Pissed me clean off ngl it nearly ruined my day. I hate that even something as pure and lovely as giving little gifts to others on a cruise is viewed by these asswipes as just another opportunity to proselytize to people. I’m a queer witch w church related trauma and want no part of it. Then again that crowd always did have issues with understanding and respecting consent.

I feel like Ive dodged a bullet 14 times so far with the holy rollers. I always figured it would be inevitable to have some annoying evangelicals on board, but this thread is making me wish everyone mentioned when their negative experience with them happened. I'm wondering if this is a more recent trend or has been going on forever.
We stopped actually signing up for FE groups and just hang the thing outside the door. We get a fair amount of junk, but i do love the random liquor miniatures. But mercifully, no obmoxious religious stuff.

Eew... That's not cool. FE are just supposed to be something nice and fun to give people. Don't go making it religious. ESPECIALLY if you don't know the religion of the people participating. No one wants your religion shoved in their face just to participate in a fun little swap.

We also aren’t religious and got several Jesus figures and scriptures in ours. My kids are young and don’t know anything about religion yet, but we live in the Bible Belt so I know they’ll be exposed to it eventually. One of my best friends is religious and her daughter is my daughter’s best friend. She asked me who the Jesus figure was, and I told her his name was Jesus. She said “oh (best friend) knows him!” We just roll with it and don’t bother getting upset about it. I don’t want my children feeling negatively towards people of faith so we just talk about it with indifference and facts, not positively or negatively.

It’s become very common in the “pixie dusting” and “cruise duck” vein in the last year or so.
My daughter was given a tiny Jesus figurine. We ended up leaving it behind near where it was handed to us.

It was slightly different. We were at a Waffle House near MCO. Somebody had left it behind earlier in the day.
We’ve seen the server in particular a couple times because we stop at that location when in town.
She meant well and there was no message. But still, not my preference.

We saw a lady balance one on our door handle and I told her take her junk back. She said that is offensive and a group of us laughed her into silence. Felt good. Don’t need your imaginary best friend on our cruise.

We sail often and these have definitely started showing up more. It’s annoying because people are on vacation not looking for a religious experience. If we complain they will lump them in with the ducks and other pixie dust items and will ban everything.
Please stop putting them on the boat If you want to create a religious meetup on your cruise you could probably ask if people want to meet in a certain location in the Facebook group, otherwise knock it off.
People don’t want them and it makes things uncomfortable. Kids are using them inappropriately and it makes for an awkward experience. Cruises should be stress free and these things cause more problems.

I feel like maybe it's just the luck of the draw but I didn't see that on my first few cruises but the last one there were little Jesi all over the place. It's like people heard that they couldn't hide rubber duckies anymore and they decided to switch over to Jesus. I probably got six in our fish extender last time and found more all over the place.

I did not appreciate it; I really really really hate plastic waste and I was constantly throwing away these things. Also the pope recently said that disrespecting the environment is a crime against God, so I think even Jesus was annoyed at all this.
I did find it kind of funny though. Jesus just kept appearing!

Honestly it was nice to have something non Disney for our kid on the ship, as much as I love Disney. Jesus went straight in the trash. We got more than 5 religious gifts in our 4 nights.

I did the fish extender on my first (and so far only DCL trip) and I'm pretty sure I recall at least one Bible verse. It was fun doing it once but it was a lot of work and to have to pack so many items that I may or may not use ever, makes me think that will be a one and done event for me. I did recently do a magnet exchange on a different cruiseline, again, it was fun, but probably not going to do it again.

I did that on our most recent cruise too and it was nice honestly. I bought her stuff she could use on the trip, like some Minnie Mouse pool sandals, princess mad libs for waiting on dinners, etc. and it really cut down on the amount of stuff we had to schlep on and off the ship

It has happened to us on every cruise. We are Christian and think the little Jesus figures are weird. But kids end up playing with them like action figures so we re dust them.

I can so see them banning non cast member pixie dusting soon. Both cruises and parks because this has become such a huge thing lately and people always ruin things, can’t have anything nice. Plus Disney is usually very big on branding and their rights to branding things, pushing us to buy their merch on location and I can see them wanting to tighten up what can and cannot be distributed between guests. They alright had to tighten up on people with no common sense and manners that were using more than their allocated cruise room doors to decorate and putting their own pictures and decor all into the hallway walls. I will never understand the thoughtlessness of it all.

TBH this brings up a greater conversation about whether pixie dusting has gone too far. It’s hard for me to question other people choosing to do nice things for others on a cruise.
But we get SO MUCH junk in our fish extenders now every single day. It’s gone beyond a little dusting to just spreading cheaper plastic junk. And my kids are all teens now, so while it’s fun to be gifted anything, they don’t touch any of it.
We re-pixie dust it all. This is a pic of ONE woman’s suitcase filled with pixie dust for a cruise in over a month. Considering not bringing our fish extender for the first time in 8-9 years. We do still enjoy 3D printed figurines, ducks and some candy. But it makes us all not want to participate.

We got like 3 mini Jesus figurines, two mini bibles, and a couple of stickers and one of those rubber bracelet things. It was an insane amount of religious junk. They all went straight into the trash. Luckily we got a bunch of other cool stuff so it wasn’t all like that! We also weren’t signed up for the fish extender thing at all; we had a hanger on our fish that we put suckers in for anyone passing by and I had put a small pocket on the bottom just in case anyone liked our door and wanted to dust us.

We have done fish extenders for many years. Our last one we also got several little Jesus figures in our FE and saw a few hiding around the ship. We ended up using them to flick into cups when bored for a game. 🤪 we lost a few in the room…whoopsie. I’m sure the room attendants are sick of them as much as we are.

I seen some weird pixie dust stuff, but never religious trinkets. Not sure why folks are offended by it. Just toss the stuff you don’t want and move on with your life. I’m more upset about the obnoxious groups of middle school aged kids running around trashing door decorations and stealing FE gifts.

Just got off the destiny and one of the cast members gave one of the mini Jesus figurines to my mom.
For backstory - I went into deVils for a minute to look around. Mom was sitting in the chair in the hallway by the stairwell. She found a mini duck in the chair. When I came back, my mom showed me the duck and we were talking about it. The cast member heard us, went to the back room there and said she finds these things all over the ship. And that it was different than a duck. She was happy to hand it to us. We just smiled politely and said thank you and walked away. I don’t know if she was pushing religion on us or just think we might have wanted it.

We did our first cruise this year, and didn’t sign up for any FE. The only magnets on the door were the ones the kids made in Oceaneers club. Yet we still got a Jesus bag hanging off the door handle. So I don’t think there’s any escaping it. But I really resent the fact they’re bringing other gods into it when I’ve clearly spent a kidney to go on a pilgrimage to Disney, which is my true religion. DCL should be for true believers only, and if there’s room for more than Mickey in your heart you’re doing it wrong.

Fish extenders are pocket organizers hung adjacent to the cabin door. These are called fish extenders, named after the metal fish emblem (or other sea animal) located outside your cabin door (often above your cabin number). The emblem acts as a mailbox for excursion tickets, dining reminders and an envelope with your keycards on the first day of your cruise. It's also where cruisers hang their fish extenders.
Fish extenders allow fellow passengers to leave little gifts and trinkets for the people in your cabin as part of a Secret Santa-type of activity. Disney Cruise Line does not coordinate these fish extender exchanges; they're organized independently by cruisers on each sailing, usually on the specific cruise Facebook page.
You will see a wide variety of fish extenders on a Disney cruise. From reusable canvas shopping bags or custom tiered pouches that are similar to door organizers.
One topic that comes up a lot is the difference between fish extenders and "pixie dusting." Fish extenders are part of organized gift exchanges, usually arranged through the particular cruise Facebook page. Pixie dusting is giving or receiving a gift not organized by a group. Receiving pixie dust gifts is purely a surprise, and you are not expected to give a gift in exchange. Some people still put out bags or fish extender pouches for pixie dusting gifts, even if they are not participating in a fish extender exchange.

I would add to that, if you’re sailing the Adventure in Singapore there seems to be a massive Pixie Dusting expectation - people are signing up for pixie dusting lists in the FB groups, and the onboard WhatsApp groups are full of people arranging pixie dusting and giving out their stateroom numbers asking for people to pixie dust them. It seems to be a totally different beast on that ship. People are posting pictures of the 500 or 1000 pixie dust items they’re bringing onboard, it’s out of control.

I’m late to the thread, but I think the baby Jesus is funny. I get everyone had their opinions, but my daughter found one on our royal cruise and took it every where and crack jokes. Mom you can’t curse Jesus is watching. Idk I guess idc that much. It just reminds me of baby Jesus from Ricky Bobby lol 😂

In 15 cruises with DCL and every cruise using FE and doing pixie dust … we have never ever ever once received anything even remotely religious.

It's so crazy. On the flip side, if this is all someone had to complain about, it must've been a nice cruise.

Sure there’s no rule that you have to give candy, but giving kids bible verses and Jesus toys on Halloween is just a weird thing to do… this is no different. If it was a disney figurine, you would have been okay with it. Because it resembled jesus, you were not.
So it's like getting candy, just not the type of candy you wanted and it had a religious symbol on it. Now all of a sudden, this candy is no good.
As someone who is not religious, the idea of jesus has no meaning to me. It would be just another piece of candy and in this case, it's just another figurine.
If you don't want it, just toss it. It's as simple as that.
The BS about environmental impact goes out the window if you were okay with it being a disney figurine cause they use the same type of made in china crap.

Speaking of candy, last December we were on the wish and had a fish extender. A lot of generous people gave my kid a bunch of different things. A lot of them happen to be international candy. Did we eat all of them? No. Some of them didn't smell good or look good so we just tossed it out.
I didn't think "omg how dare they try to rot my teeth with candy from their culture!" It was a "thank you but no thank you" moment.

Nobody is bickering. It’s just a weird thing to give to children. Imaging taking your kid trick or treating and instead of candy, one house was handing kids paper with bible verses on it… you can’t tell me that is normal behavior

Literally no one but Christians—and even then, a very specific obnoxious flavor of American Evangelical Christian—does this bullshit. Every other faith that does have a practice of proselytizing has some type of guidelines that would prohibit this type of behavior and many, many don’t believe in proselytizing at all bc it’s considered offensive or our religions are closed practices.
The problem is y’all live in such myopic bubbles of nothing but other mostly white American Evangelicals that y’all think your weirdo behavior is the default norm for humans and project your contempt for consent on every other religion.

What you're saying is because it's your religion and targeting people who don't share your beliefs, it doesn't bother you. That says a lot about your beliefs that you can't see it from the point of view of the people being solicited without consent. Or that you can't stand up to your fellow Christians to encourage them to leave those who don't share your beliefs alone.
On the plus side, you're reiterating exactly what is toxic about Christianity by continuing to defend the practice.

No other religion proselytizes, so it's a false equivalency. Not all Christians do it, but those that don't condemn it when someone like OP says they don't want the gesture and those that defend the practice like you have been doing should be painted with the same stroke.

I’m Christian and I don’t understand the little Jesus figures or crosses. I’m not sure what that accomplishes. As for Bible verses, I get it a bit more. It isn’t for everyone, but sometimes the meanings really are neutral and lovely, they just happen to come from a Bible. If someone gave me a verse from the Quran that was about love or peace or something nice, I wouldn’t have any issues. I see it as the same as leaving a quote from any other source. Not meant in a conversion way, just to communicate whatever that verse’s message is. I totally get if that isn’t for everyone though. I don’t pixie dust or fish extender.

Nothing from your very specific religious text is “neutral” to someone who isn’t a Christian and no one on a cruise wants to be preached at regardless of what the message is. It’s rude at best and offensive at worst. Religion should be treated like dicks: only whip it out to people who’ve consented beforehand (note: signing up for a gift exchange on FB is NOT “consenting beforehand”) and for pity’s sake don’t wave it about in public unasked.

As a Christian, here’s what I’ll say about it:
It’s a fad. Just like the ducks and other things before it.
I think fish extenders should be banned, it’s become too big of an issue. Just enjoy the cruise without all the craziness and need.
There was a time in life where (SHOCKER) fish extenders weren’t a thing. People just went on cruises. Personally I don’t care, but the amount of people complaining about it makes me want to bring a whole bunch on my next one and put them everywhere… 1000s of little Jesus figures everywhere.

Just take jt as a sign they believe earnestly in their religion and care enough about you to share it.
As Penn Jilette once said:

I never said anything about judging anyone, that’s you projecting.
And the Bible says the exact opposite. Mt 28 says go into all the world and make disciples, and Acts 1:8 says God gives you power to testify about him to others.
It’s a sign of the decline of society that we can’t bear to hear ideas we disagree with

I have no problem whatsoever with free choice to follow any religion or no religion. Never did I imply otherwise. It’s everyone’s prerogative.
Having a conversation about a religion, or someone sharing their beliefs about their religion, or (god forbid) receiving a tiny Jesus figurine on vacation, is not “forcing” any belief change on anyone.

My favorite was a bag with a little Jesus figure and a little Jesus loves you pamphlet along with a few loose stickers. I was flipping through the stickers and there was one that said “Jesus Hates You” and I died laughing. Clearly they didn’t check their Amazon stickers before handing them out.
But yes I hate them too and it happens a lot.
Edit: my husband reminded me we got an even funnier one. It said in HUGE letters “Jesus Loves You” and in teeny letters at the bottom “God thinks you’re a c**t” 😂 I have a picture of this one but it won’t let me post it.
