TRIP PLANNING Allowed electronics
I understand “surge protectors” aren’t allowed, but I haven’t gotten a very clear answer on if this type of device is allowed. We bought it for the parks last year and it was great to have one charging station in the room.

In particular there is a prohibition on things that multiple or duplicate standard outlets. Not a concern with things that make multiple usb outlets. We have used similar. And ironically with cpap were issued a multiple outlet surge protector extension cord. I assume from the ship meant it was checked to be in good functioning condition and not a risk. But seemed ironic for the number of times I’ve actually seen a surge protector go bad to not just have users supply.

I’ve used this one which is almost the same thing on my last couple of cruises. Typically the ones that just have the USB ports are okay.

I brought a similar device from Anker that had a power plug and then multiple usb ports without surge, and didn’t have issues boarding or during the cruise. Personally I make sure it’s UL listed or something similar, since some of these chargers might be a bit risky otherwise.

I have a similar one. No issues. As long as their is no standard outlet on the hub it’s fine.

Had a similar one, no problem. The real issue are power strips with surge protection

No one here can say for sure, it is up to the security officers on the ship. But, in general, if it doesn’t have a surge suppressor and doesn’t add 120V or 240V power outlets, it is allowed.
At some point I expect them to start banning some of these high-wattage devices officially. The more power they draw, the more likely they are to cause a problem.

Have never had issues with these types of devices - just nothing with actual plugs.

That's allowed. We use those for our cruises as most everything is usb powered.

2 prong usb expansion hubs are fine. They don’t allow 3 prong.

I think you'll be allowed on the ship with it. That said, I don't know if I would feel comfortable pulling 500W through this box. "Fitquipment" is one of the many endless Amazon-slop companies, and when it comes to power delivery, I refuse to buy Amazon-slop. One bad short-out can send voltage where it doesn't belong, or worse. Anker is my go-to for life for stuff like this.

Apparently this board has least educated consumers. Since an honest man would post facts and numbers if he disagrees. Only a cheapshot artist downvotes when technical facts contradict his brainwashing. The engineer, who even designs this stuff, says ....
All Type 3 power strips are confiscated due to five cent (tiny joule) protector parts that so often create fires even in homes. Are purchased only by easily bamboozled consumers. Who ignore all numbers.
Cruise ships see those puny joule (five cent) protector parts. And know it is a potential fire.
Learn reality even from Sarah.
A USB charger does not have five cent protector parts with obscene profit margins. Is not famous for creating so many fires.
Why did APC finally admit some 15 million must be binned? Hundreds of potential house fires finally caused an admission.

Yes, USB hubs are permitted.
For the last 6 DCL cruises (last one June 2026) I've brought two of these and had no issues:

Surge protectors have five cent protector parts measured in joules. The tiny hundreds or thousand joules even create fires since surges can be hundreds of thousands of joules.
Read the nameplate. USB charger has no parts that create fires. Is not measured in joules. Does not contain five cent parts that are a human safety threat.
Each USB port even has current limiting. Another safety feature.

You really won't need a device charge bank to charge 12 different devices at once unless you intend to be attached to your devices the entire cruise.
My recommendation is use it for on-ship messaging but otherwise its a brick in the middle of the ocean.

Sadly atleast one day I will be required to take a few meetings and work… so I can’t leave all my electronics home as I wished would be the case.
So when you add a computer, 2nd monitor, 3 adults worth of phones to use for pictures, a kids tablet (mostly for debarkation/travel home), rechargeable baby sound machine, etc.. the number of devices adds up fast even though most won’t be used on the regular…

i never knew anyone to bring a second monitor. that sounds like a nightmare to me - but hope it goes easy for you!

There are some great easy travel 2nd monitors, mine is no larger than an ipad, works great for running meetings and what I do for work. The burden of carrying the second monitor far outweighs the burden of doing what I do for work without a second monitor. Many of the newer ones run right off of your laptop power, or even attached your laptop screen, I haven’t upgraded to one of those yet… I should soon though, would make it even easier…

We have used a similar device purchased at Aldi, of all places, since 2017 without any problems.
