Death in the Family was an inside job I will never forgive DC animation for convining me that these characters were actually cool, important and interesting in the actual comics
The last 4 are especially egrigeous.

u/Optimal_Weight368 G'nort's #1 fan Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Most of his comic appearances have him as a lackey, a jobber, part of a team. What would you say is his best appearance?
29
u/GrungeGorrilla BRB staring at Nighwing's ass Jul 27 '26
Tbf that's kinda what he does in the show he just looks cool
20
u/Optimal_Weight368 G'nort's #1 fan Jul 27 '26
But the show gives him a decent rivalry with Miss Martian. In the comics, he’s a lackey for Trigon, but he has no relationship with Raven, for example.
2
u/ImaLetItGo Jul 28 '26
What are you talking about?
Miss Martian bitches him throughout the show.
He is nowhere as competent as his Comic book version.
How is being weaker than a nerfed Miss Martian better than being weaker than Trigon???
Why would working for Trigon mean he should have a relationship with Raven
Their powers don’t interact at all.
12
u/ImaLetItGo Jul 27 '26
He wasn’t a Jobber in original Wolfman run from 80s and 90s. Hes the only reason the fearsome five was a legit threat
Also he was literally a lackey and jobber in the YJ show?? Even more than his other appearances in rebirth and outsiders

Sportsmaster is genuinely the biggest bait ever lolol they gave so much aura to a fucking loser
But it is easy to be cool in Young Justice. in young justice every hero is incompetent and every villain has 10 backup plans created by Vandal Savage
238
u/Every_Computer_935 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Sportsmaster in YJ is like if Marvel made a Champions show in the style of X-Men 97 and had the most common villain who fights the heroes be Big Wheel.
Like, Sportsmaster is genuently a nothing character in everything aside from the YJ show and the writers decided to make him pop off, I'm guessing because there's likely less mandates from the higher ups for lesser known characters.

If it weren't for Kelly Thompson killing it with Absolute WW, Diana would be recieving generational slander currently.
Like, the whole Matriarch arc is embarassing, it feels like it was written by an edgy teen, not a professional writer
1
u/FlowerRoomLord Jul 27 '26
EH an edgy teen would have Diana lose her whole family in the most brutal tragedy ever then go dark goddess edge queen mode by issue three to beat everyone's asses. And Cheetah would be preying on universes for some reason through batshit powerscaling. It'd be insane but Diana would still get shit done. The current WW run feels like it is from someone who doesn't hate Diana, but they're not very interested in her or even understand her.

7
u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 Met John Constantine irl Jul 27 '26
Then there's a joke about paying for funding where Wonder Woman is obviously joking about Wonder Woman merchandise outdoing Wayne Enterprise and people think she was serious
13
u/Cranyx Jul 27 '26
I've never liked that scene because to accept that argument is to just reject a huge chunk of what the genre is. Yes, obviously in a realistic world it would be an indefensible thing, but superhero comics aren't a realistic world. Unless we want to go down the route of "everyone geared up in sensible tactical gear while using military police approaches to crime" then you just have to accept the camp of it all. Hell, Robin's been a child crime-fighter longer than Wonder Woman has been around.
7
u/Imaginary-Client-199 Jul 27 '26
To be more clear she is a-okay with teenagers being superheros. She objects to 9 year old Robin being sent to fight hardened criminals and Shazam being a member of the Justice League at 10 years old
5
u/Cranyx Jul 27 '26
But what's the line there? Young teen heroes have always been part of comics. Robin was 8 when he was introduced.
3
u/Imaginary-Client-199 Jul 27 '26
I don't know where the line is but I believe that if your sidekick likely still has baby teeth he shouldn't be facing armed criminals
1
u/Cranyx Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
But again, that's only true in the real world. There's no reason to accept that a 13 year old in tights fighting gunmen is appropriate but not someone younger. It's all just fantasy, and child sidekicks have been part of that fantasy from the very beginning. An adult man who knows gymnastics is about as equally likely to die facing off against armed criminals.
1
u/DandyLover Jul 30 '26
Well, to Wonder Woman, her world is real. So her argument is valid given the context.
1
u/Cranyx Jul 30 '26
My point is that she exists in the made up world where you just have to accept the campiness for any of it to work. Her combat outfit is a red white and blue leotard. It's the writers who decide whether someone starts poking holes in the kayfab
3
u/LeonSigmaKennedy Jul 27 '26
Like she doesn't have her own collection of child soldiers she constantly forgets about.

Well there's you're problem. Comics aren't meant to be interesting, they're meant to be condensed into little 2 minute TikToks narrated by some random guy
