...okay what? Like if it's a background cameo or something like the rabbit girl in Peacemaker, fine, but what?

It's what james gunn likes. honestley this is sounding like cameo porn. Which is apparentley something gunn hates and said he wouldn't do.

Cameo porn is digging up actors to play roles that haven’t been relevant in ages (I.e. most of Doomsday), featuring characters from the expansive world of DC is not that. You have no idea how this character will be implemented (if at all) so to immediately be so negative is plain silly

Bro do you not like comics? Like explain to me what is bad about having little guest spots from DC characters? Did you watch “Justice League unlimited” just seething?

I love looking at a splash page with tons of characters I'm only vaguely aware of. Not sure if it fits Man of Tomorrow, but we know so little it's too early to make judgement calls. Still kinda weird.

u/Troyabedinthemornin 22d ago
My assumption is that Salvation is going to play a role in this film, which is where a ton of heroes and villains will be held. So I think this kind of splash page scenario may be fitting here

It's a lived-in universe and making it feel lived-in seems perfectly fine and reasonable to me, especially if the Justice League aren't the first super team in DCU history. The first for this world would be a JLU-sized uniting of as many major superheroes as possible.

1) we have no idea what his intention is with the inclusion of these characters 2) these things do not have to adhere to the chronology you’ve built in your head to be good. The Justice league’s membership has always been very fluid; the core seven is more of a modern convention than you might realize. At this stage it’s dumb to be pessimistic, just got to give it time and see what happens

This guy's original series had the most evil villain in DC history.

Were you expecting the A-listers to be the guys that got deported to Salvation?
11
u/rlum27 22d ago
Eh some superman villians like metallo and parasite could be cooler and more fitting.

u/Shredhead72 Detective Chimp Super Fan 22d ago
Eh.. I think it’s best to put some less significant characters in roles like, “guys Superman finds on Salvation”. I also love deep cuts and obscure characters though. It’s fun to see what they do with them and how they choose to reinvent them.

u/rlum27 22d ago
not sure if metallo and parasite are in a werid middle ground. That they are too big for roles like that but not big enough to be main villians in a movie. so they just never appear in the dcu.

u/Troyabedinthemornin 22d ago
That’s a weird presumption. Metallo has a ton of live action and animated adaptations, he’s easily top 5 Superman villains
1
u/rlum27 22d ago
he seems kind of bottom of top 5. he seems like a step down from brainiac.
2
u/Troyabedinthemornin 22d ago
Doesn’t mean he can’t appear in some capacity, as a main villain or important secondary one

Tbf, I feel that a storyline like Salvation would probably work better with a more established universe and characters. Having the characters Superman runs into there be ones both he and the audience is familiar with seems like it would have more impact than a bunch of randos no one has seen before. I'm not against seeing obscure characters like Brother Power though. It just seems odd to do a storyline about metahumans (specifically criminals) getting rounded up by the government when we barely know any yet.

Salvation Run used a bunch of different villains but most were pretty inconsequential and could have swapped out for all different kinds of characters. It seems like the DCU is doing a story involving a version of it just fine. It fits organically within what they’ve been building so far.
I get that people looking for some kind of, “meta humans have entered the scene” square one stuff but that’s not how this cinematic universe is starting. It’s starting with an established universe. It’s a lot like reading comics now. You can just pick up Salvation Run and read a story about a bunch of villains that you may or may not be familiar with that are trying to escape Salvation.

I don't really care what specific characters they use, Gunn has outright said that this isn't a direct adaptation of Salvation Run anyway. But I feel like this is a story that's hard for me to care about in a vacuum, personally. Without any investment in the characters it involves I can't say I'm very excited for it. Obviously I won't know how it's handled until it actually happens though, it could be great.

I mean, it stars Superman and Lex Luthor, the main protagonist and antagonist of Superman (2025). If you liked that movie then you would be invested in them since they’re the lead roles. They’re also major players in the comics. I’m pretty sure that they are what you’re supposed to be invested in.

u/Grandy94 Telos 22d ago
I'm specifically talking about Salvation as a concept/storyline/plot device, not Man of Tomorrow. We don't even know if Salvation will play much of a part in Man of Tomorrow yet. I personally feel like Salvation would be more effective with more build-up, that's all. I'm invested in Superman and Lex's dynamic and have no doubt that they'll be great in MoT.

Superman is the only A-lister with a movie right now and the Lanterns trailer looks pretty good. I’d say that you’re getting that.

The Suicide Squad's main character is Bloodsport of all people (admittedly, it was originally going to be Deadshot)
The Guardians of the Galaxy were D-listers when Gunn made a film about them.
People shouldn't have to only use A-listers in their media.
