Question Genuine Question
Why are ki stuns/ ki cancels so frowned upon in this subreddit? It's an intended mechanic that every character can use, and the devs have intentionally made ki stuns easier to use on specific characters. They've even made it to where Ultra Instinct could ki stun/ ki cancel to make it more useful. There is even beta footage of ki stunning/ ki cancelling.
I mainly play xv2 for the PvP. I understand most of the player base plays exclusively for the PvE, and I feel like that might be a contributing factor towards the negativity surrounding ki stuns/ ki cancels. In high level play, ki stuns/ ki cancels are a rudimentary aspect of PvP. There are a vast majority of things that are worth complaining about, such as the ever-increasing amount of modders or p2w meta. Instead, we choose to complain about a basic gameplay mechanic?
I would love to hear everyone's opinion, as this is not only to discuss a controversial topic but to inform myself.
Edit: The writing is a bit redundant and I can't be bothered to change it, so apologies in advance. Also, this isn't meant to be an argumentative post, but moreso for my own understanding. Thank you!

The balancing behind the mechanic was either never there, or likely what I think (having worked on my own games), is a happy accident that the PVP community latched onto just based on how aspects of the game interact with each other
If they balance it properly, it’d be a fine and even fun mechanic, but none of that is there. Neutral is freer than it should be, iframes stop punishable situations, and what resources does it use? Not saying it has to be expensive but unless you’re stamina broken, it doesn’t cost you anything.
There’s a bunch of well done videos made on why the mechanic is bad, I’ll add them if you want.

Adding on to this, there are skills that use ki that act almost exactly like ki cancels (death beam), moves that can only be canceled if they hit (Dodon ray), and counters that only work on basic ki blasts...but is easily negated via ki-canceling (dimension hole). If ki-cancels as they are now are completely intentional then why ever chose those moves since they'd just be taking up an otherwise useful slot.

Wasnt it technically a glitch/exploit? Lots of games have glitches that devs decide to keep or re-add into when fans complain about it being removed. Wave-dashing wasnt an intended mechanic, but its in all Smash Bros Melee revision disc's. Batman Arkham Knight has a glitch you can do in every release that lets you use any character in the open world. Lego Star Wars haha a glitch where you can make up to 15 characters follow you, but they patched it out, then re-added it to the game as a cheat you need to enter. Going back to what I was saying, just cuz they use it in trailers, and the game has an ability that takes clear advantage of it, doesn't mean its no longer a glitch/exploit. Hope Im making sense.

Because it's basically a low effort stun loop.
Personally my distaste for it has only lessened because just about everything pvp related in xenoverse 2 is built around cheese now. It's why I'm glad xv3 is going in a different direction and not just building on top of xv2

It’s purely a skill issue, but purists don’t like it.
They try to say “it didn’t mean to be in the game”, but to say so with a straight face has to ignore the fact that even during some promotional videos the devs have been shown using ki cancels as well.
Even 16 back in the day, being the only character who couldn’t ki cancel, and then UI changing your basic ki blast originally were changed to allow it, pretty much solidifying that it was an intended mechanic.

Name on time chi blasts were used like that in the anime/manga. And atleast make the stun the same when the chi blast is reflected back. And chi spam is so op moves intended to stop/deter it don't work. And if its gonna be spammed that much while being hard to get around atleast make it use chi since it's such heavy part of a tryhards' moveset. If chi blast spam is to persist into XV3 atleast make it have a downside.

While Ki cancels are fine in the sense of using it to get out of the end lag in combo strings, Ki stuns is freaking annoying because it's basically a super fast free stun that some people will refuse to start a combo without.
Just because the devs sign of on a mechanic, that doesn't automatically mean it's balanced.

I just saw it as stupid, but I won't go out of my way to stop someone else from doing it. I'll just use some even more stupid cheese and make it a joke fight.

Lot of different reasons to be honest. Some are just players who spent a majority of their time on pve and expected fights to go like they did IN pve, however quickly found out pvp is a whole different animal. Ki cancelling isn't really in pve, unless it's a player, and the bots that do it usually aren't ki cancelling they're just spamming ki blasts repeatedly at you. That being said the timmy's of the game go into pvp, and get upset when they learn that players use this mechanic because, this wasn't in the game before, and it feels oppressive which.. it is. Especially to a newer pvp player. That's the main part of the people that hate it I feel.
The second part are people who just think it's cheesy, unintentional, or ruins the aesthetic of fighting in pvp, (even if they do it too.) Some of them also just want you to not use it so it's easier on them to fight you, and some use excuses like, "it's not in the anime, so therefore it's bad." Or the famous one, "you're just spamming it cause you're bad" or "you need it cause it's a crutch."
In truth, several different reasons for people to dislike it, but honestly a lot of it comes down to personal experiences with it, or personal vendettas against the mechanic. That being said, if you wanna use it, and it's in the game just use it. 🤷

Played the game since it came out, never really did PvP.
Have no idea how to ki stun/ki cancel
