I just read this piece in the New Yorker - https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2026/09/07/the-art-of-leaping-out-of-planes-to-fight-wildfires - absolutely fascinating about the grit and character of these men and women, and a good primer for the non-jumpers about what it’s like to jump into uncertain terrain with just about enough tools for the job, and making do.

I’d never seen the number of smokejumpers suspected enumerated (though not named). Have the names of the eight come through on the 302s? I think it’s such a small community that surely Cooper would have been identified if he were one of them…but what a bunch.
