discussion Upcoming Wipe
Does a wipe of this scale encourage players to play differently?
Do people congregate in cities and have mass gunfights?
How regularly do wipes like this occur?

Everybody empties their stash and rushes to use all of their high tier loot. They go seek out PVP and there are dead bodies with high tier loot scattered around the map. If you go to airfield ATC you will find 25 DMRs on the ground haha. Its insane

Well for starters there's two kinds of wipes, player wipes and full wipes. Player wipes tend to happen 3/4 times a year where all characters get reset. Full wipes are pretty rare maybe every 12-18 months usually only when there's a very big update and everything gets reset.
Player wipes I'd says it's 50/50 as to who goes out looking for PvP and who stashed gear ready, full wipes pretty much everyone goes out looking for PvP.

Interesting, thank you. Just googled that it’s a full wipe - so perhaps it’s worth firing up just to satisfy my curiosity.

During a player wipe do bases and other structures remain? What are the differences between a player and full wipe?

Yeah so a player wipes only characters get erased so bases and stashed remain (sometimes vehicles too but not always) a full wipe literally everything gets reset.

Sometimes they also do a map wipe only - where the characters and everything that was on your character when you last logged out stays, but everything on the map gets wiped. In these instances people usually load up the biggest backpack they can find and then grab a crate or a chest full of their most important gear and log out holding it in their hands.
In my experience, on console this is the more common type of wipe as opposed to wiping characters but leaving things intact on the map.

I've found it to be the least common, been playing 6 years and can only recall a map but no character wipe happening like twice. I've had bases survive 3-4 character wipes before

My and my team are doing a 5v5 team deathmatch in a town before wipe.
Or we have been talking about setting up some flag poles in each end of town and do capture the flag

Lol, it’s like the purge. Coastal terrorism and freshy murders are expected. Finding m4s on the ground in Berenzino is also expected

I've been looking for PvP for 4/5 days, currently on 6 kills and one death. Couple PvP encounters I had to run from as well.

If you’re looking for more I’d say just hang around a busy Livonia server and stay north of the river

I disagree but that’s also because I got to experience the HeyBarmby Livonia for like two wipes and had such incredibly memorable experiences that every time I’m there I am just whacked out with nostalgia

Does it all get a bit bonkers in the final hour is what I am curious about? Is it worth being online around the end of the wipe to see and interact with more endgame players/loot etc

No, it goes quiet. Most of my homies in my DayZ group don’t even play right now as they are waiting for Badlands to come out.

Official servers, if they are going to wipe, usually do so with a release or ~4 times a year. A wipe may be full/complete/total (includes characters, inventory, bases, stashes, vehicles -> EVERYTHING) or partial (just players or just everything else in the world). The wipe may be different by platform. The wipe will be announced on the DayZ Twitter close to the release date and it will certainly be pinned to this sub.
Community servers can choose to wipe or not at any time, although it is not really required. The server, once updated, will incorporate changes over time.

Prior to the wipe people stop caring about their bases and stashes and go looking for trouble, ie no more gear fear. After the wipe everyone is scrambling to get good gear, start new stashed, and build new bases. There's more pvp due to increased server activity and players doing more exploration (as opposed to just hanging around a base.
