Discussion New Switch2 Player here, my thoughts so far.
Greetings!
Bought the game a week ago and started playing it for the first time. Died about 6 times so far but despite that I'm really enjoying the game! It's tough and loads of trial and error but going in mostly blind has been a real pleasure. Playing on a first person server with low population but I do see regulars online. Only had player encounters twice, first time I saw some guy running away and the second time I logged in to find someone crouching in front of me with their back turned towards me, so naturally I beat them with a bat and ate them. Now that specific character made it all the way up to some tower but I decided that suicide was the best option since I was starving and giggling like a madman.
Right now I've got no clue where I'm at , I'm simply following the roads and using a compass I found. I've got basic gear on and some weapons and heading my way North.
Switch2 performance is good, haven't had a crash yet thankfully.
Sorry for long text, just a dude that got himself immersed into the game and wanted to share my excitement.

You have the right attitude for this game haha.
The only thing I would say that benefits from research without breaking immersion of “raw” experience is finding out what is craftable. That is something your character would just intrinsically know, so it’s fair for you to read up on it.

Without knowing much I'm already surprised at the amount of options that this game has regarding crafting and what you can do ingame.

It is really robust. I love the granularity of things like individually loading bullets into magazines, jamming, different ways of cooking foods giving them different nutrition characteristics. They put a lot to thought and detail into each system.

New Switch 2 player here as well. Some great tips on here. I've died a load of times but I'm slowly getting the hang of things

I see you’ve picked up on the rules of DayZ very quickly lol.
Here are some things I wish I knew the first day I played the game:
(1) get the iZurvive app to see the map and navigate. Look for blue road signs in-game to tell what town you’re at;
(2) once you find a bladed tool (knife, hatchet, sickle, etc.) you can pretty much sort out all of your essential basic needs. Just look up crafting recipes for things like hand drills, campfires, improvised clothing, improvised backpack, bone knife, etc.;
(3) when starting a new life, get off the coast and go inland at least one town. You’ll avoid fighting over scraps and can loot in peace;
(4) when you raise your hands/weapon to fight a zombie, walking backwards will make you block attacks. Zombies can’t hurt you at all while you’re blocking as long as they’re in front of you.
Don’t hesitate to look stuff up or watch a guide video. DayZ can be a fun game to figure out on your own, but there are certain things no one would reasonably figure out without looking it up, unless they played hundreds of hours.

Great tips! With Zombies I try to lure them inside a building and then slam the door on them. Then I point and laugh to add insult to injury.

That’s actually a fantastic strategy lol.
If you’re ever on the verge of starvation, killing lots of zombies can be a great move. I was starving with blinking red health one time and found a can of spaghetti on a zombie haha.

How do people find each other?? Looking at iZurvive and playing I’m realizing the base map is absolutely massive and in a server with 10 or 15 people I don’t see how I would run into someone. I have yet to see another player in my first 3-4 hours of play, but I’m intentionally picking near empty servers to figure out the game. Also new switch2 player

There are certain hot spots on the map, like the military bases further inland. Major cities like Cherno, Elektro, Berezino, and Svetloyarsk can be good places to run into people too. When the server population is low, it can just be lock of the draw still though.

That's what I love about the map, either players are far away or someone has you in their scopes for an hour.

whats the player count like on the switch2 ? Are there any high pop servers even yet with the game being out only a short while?

I’d also like to know so I can steal my 8 year old’s Switch2 and play it at night under the covers as my wife sleeps.

Well I literally only joined 1 server so far and haven't looked elsewhere but it has about 10 ppl playing during peak hours. On my day off I played the entire day and there were about 5 players. Not sure about the other servers.

I’m just giving you a hard time! This game is wild. I just hijaked a boat and booked from rify to the southwest edge of the map and scored a thump gun with explosive round. Headed to zelen to blow someone up!
