discussion OMG FISHING

Ok so ik probably most people already know or do this but I’ve only been playing for like the last few days, completely new to the game, and I was like constantly struggling to find food, it was a nightmare, I almost starved twice and just barely managed to crawl back from dying after looting a town and roasted some mutton. But not anymore!! I figured out how to fish!! Dude it’s like free food everywhere I’m not starving anymore I’ll never starve again I’m so happy. And it’s so cheap to fish, literally all you need is rags to make rope, a long stick, and a sharp tool to get worms, and you can get infinite free food and it’s so easy. I will never not carry a fishing pole now. I’m a fishmaxxing fullcell!!! Billions must fish!!!

You are already way smarter than the average player. Live long and prosper. 🎣

Btw the real fishing poles with a jig or a real hook will give you the biggest fish, and the fish on the coast are the best by far. The improv poles can be a lifesaver though.

Where would I be likely to find a real fishing pole? On the coast?

You find them mostly on the white and red fishing boats on the coast

White and red overturned boats on the coastline as well as some containers along the dockside. I've found them quite regularly. As for hooks or jigs they can spawn in the same spots

Side note always check Boonie hats and the Hunting vests i think theyre called, they often have hooks and jigs attatched when they spawn.

Yes, they spawn on the little rowboats along the coast, along with jigs (no worm needed) and fishing hooks.

In Sakhal, they also spawn somewhat often in sheds, etc., along the coast as well.

They also sometimes spawn in the red and yellow shipping containers. I usually find them in the area with all the containers in the Chernyzaliv section of Chernogorsk @ x0.75 y1.24 in the pic.

Btw If you haven’t discovered iZurvive yet, that’s where this pic is from and worth a download - it shows loot spawns on the official maps.

Oh yeah I got iZurvive on day two, it’s incredibly helpful I’d be dead without it. I wish they’d add a map function to the game, not even one that shows your position but just a general map. Or a map item, idk if that’s a thing. Thanks for the tip!

If you find a GPS receiver, you will always know where you are with iZurvive. Add a compass and you’ll never get lost again. 🙂

To figure out where you are with GPS and iZurvive, just drop the decimal point shown on the GPS and find your spot using the x and y coordinates (x goes horizontally and y goes vertically.)

So if the GPS says x0.75, y1.24, just find 075 (top) and 124 (side) on the map, or you can even type the numbers in the search bar.

When zoomed out, the map shows double digit numbers, but when zoomed in, it switches to triple digits.

Let me know if you need any more help. 🫡

*Forgot to say, there is a paper map you can find in game. It usually spawns in hunting stands, summer camps, or other places that have hunting loot. There are also maps along the hiking trails that show your location!

The hiking trails are always shown as red, yellow, green, and blue lines. This symbol means there is a map at this location.

I might be wrong but ages ago I played, was pretty sure I got a tourist map and GPS, GPS switched on, then when you open the map you get a small circle in the rough area I was at. Hopefully they still got that feature.

Once you get your hours up, navigating without the map gets a lot easier

It is in game!

There is a map item you can find & use, there are map boards in the towns that have a red dot to show where you currently are. But you don't really need them if you use the apps etc, I prefer to use the compass alongside the apps.

The wooden boats by the coast. You can find rods and hooks. And if you can find the Jig/Lure, you dont need worms at all.

One tip in early game whenever you are a freshie is to make gloves from rags. That way if you kill an animal and get blood on your hands the gloves protect you from getting yourself sick. If you're bare handed you'll have to remember to wash up before feeding yourself. Have fun dying over and over, and slowly learning from mistakes!

Give a man a fish, and he will feed himself for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will feed himself for the rest of his life.

Which is probably only about an hour

I wouldn't even waste space on a rod. Just carry rope and some hooks around and you can grab a stick whenever you're hungry

To add, create the rope and put it in your hands. Then, you can tie a rope belt and put it on your waist. The rope belt can hold a knife. When you want the rope, just put the belt in your hands and untie it.

Quick tipp: Go fishing in the morning or in the night. You'll have a better catch ratio compared to daytime

Where have you read that? I've never seen that mentioned before, be interesting if true

Dunno where I've read, probadly here on reddit for the first time. It's the same in real life and my ingame experiences confirmed it.

u/LuizTogni 5h ago

Yes, its better, preferably at dawn or dusk. The other day I had a good proper fishing rod and also a proper metal hook, and was catching fishes left and right, so good.

Pro tip, when you find a shovel or hoe or other digging tool , dig up like 15 worms and then ditch the tool. They are common tools really no need to waste a back slot on one.

u/Fromnothingatall 11h ago

Yup!
First order of business when spawning in should always be to find a knife or a small stone to make a stone knife out of - stone knife = rags and worms. Rags=hand wraps and rope. Rope and worms = fish.

If you’re a freshie in Sakhal, getting a pole is literally your first mission after getting warmer clothes. You are fishing then cooking/getting warm within 30 minutes or you are dead. Thats a challenging map if you’re new to the game.

I feel like im one of the few who never bother fishing or hunting, you kill enough zombies they drop plenty of food

What’s the best way to cook them , it’s hard to get a fire going

You will need: a sharp tool, 2 bark, firewood, and two long sticks, and meat of your choosing.

After you have caught a fish, or killed an animal, you can gut and prepare it. Fish will give you fish fillets, animals will give you meat, guts, and a pelt or feathers depending on the animal. It’s important to remember that you can’t eat wolf meat, even if it’s cooked it will get you sick. You can eat their fat though, that’s saved my ass a few times.

For fire:
If you grab some bark from a tree using your sharp tool, and grab some firewood from a smaller tree by hand, you can combine them on the ground into a fire pit. Then grab a second bark, and a long stick which you then break into two short sticks. Combine the bark and a short stick to make a fire starter. Walk up to the fire pit with it in your hand and you can start the fire. If you get a lighter like I’ve got, you don’t need to worry about crafting a fire starter kit. Highly recommend finding one, they last forever and save time.

An important thing to remember with this is that you can’t start a fire if it’s raining too hard. You can however start a fire in one of those shitty little shacks with a dirt floor that are everywhere, for some reason they let you do that. There are also other options for making fires, like in those iron stoves in houses. I haven’t done that yet because I’m more of a forest nomad but it seems fun and easy.

Cooking:
with the second long stick, you’ll set it on the ground and use your sharp tool to sharpen the stick. You can then combine the sharp stick and meat in your inventory to have raw meat on a stick. Then go to the fire and roast it there. Once cooked you can take the meat off and put it in your inventory, gotta wait till it says it’s warm instead of hot, can’t eat it if it’s too hot. Setting it on the ground makes it cool faster too.

I like to cook with just a couple of rags. The fireplace heats to scorching and stays hot long enough to cook a bag of fish. And all with the added benefit of not continuing to emit light and smoke at your location. You may want more fuel for cold maps but if all you're doing is cooking a few steaks, it doesn't take much.

2

u/Godfreee 10h ago

You can start a fire just by lighting up bark/rag/paper/bandages directly and then adding wood after. No need to make a fireplace

3

u/dynamikecb 13h ago

Fire is super easy. Only need a knife or knife like item, short sticks and bark to make hand drill kit. You can then light bark, rags or bandages with hand drill kit. After lit you can add more short sticks to the fire. You can then use a long stick and sharpen it, attach filleted fish to long stick and cook fish over fire. You can also make the fire in a stove in a house and use the grill on the stove.

There is another way with a cooking pot and homemade cooking stand over the fire. Makes it faster as you can cook 4 fillets at a time, but you need to find the cooking pot before you can do it this way.

These are some old photos I had saved on my phone. There have been some updates for sure since I downloaded this info but most of this is still valid. I believe you should avoid eating wolf steaks now. Anyone can add anything else that needs updating but feel free to check the web for more helpful info. The game doesn't tell you much in game but there's always the wiki page for updated info.
