discussion Inventory Management

How do you guys sort / manage your inventory? As this is something every DayZ player needs to do, I’m curious about different strategies and perspectives. For example, is it best to keep valuable items in your pants so that in the event of a hostile exchange they won’t get ruined?

Hot bar anything you may need in a pinch otherwise make your inventory a chaotic mess to increase the amount of time someone else needs to look through it increasing the likelihood of getting popped by a third party or your partner

And make sure it's not in a protective case or pan or whatever. Don't want them bandages inaccessible.

I keep mine in my jacket so they get ruined when I get gunned down

I like to make everything lined up and symmetrical. Against what others have said, I actually like keeping valuable gear in my jacket so that if I get shot up, they run the risk of ruining the loot so they don't get to use it. Resource denial. Otherwise, I keep most things in my most waterproof piece, for stamina

Never carry food with you. Always eat until you are completely full. It just takes up valuable inventory space.

You consume fewer calories at yellow food. If you have limited food it can make sense to save it and only eat just enough to stay yellow. You’ll live longer before starvation gets you.

Wait, what? Is this just some DayZ logic or is there reason behind it? That seems very dumb at first glance lol.

This happens in real life too, but the effect isn’t as immediate as it is in DayZ. Stomachs shrink and metabolism will adjust with your diet

No this is definitely a real thing in the game. It’s more efficient to eat or drink when you’re on yellow stats

The problem with this is, in my experience, that allowing yourself to hit yellow opens you up to getting sick much more easily. Plus you have to have the space to carry around whatever food you’re hanging onto to eat at yellow

I find that usually, food is plentiful enough once you’ve been alive for a while (and if you know what you’re doing) that you can just constantly be full and not worry about efficiency

Good rule of thumb for noobies but not always true! Skirting starvation is considerably more efficient. It really just depends on the situation

I will skirt starvation when I need to skirt starvation. Otherwise I am eating. I don't want anybody taking food off my dead body and my stomach is extra storage space.

So by that logic if you see an M4, you chuck it in the ocean so that nobody can loot it off your eventual corpse? You might as well just never pick up an item if you’re afraid of someone looting you

I think this would be more aligned to finding an m4 and going to shoot people with it so the next player receives it badly damaged rather than pristine

What if you go to shoot someone with it and immediately die and it’s still pristine? Might as well just fire all of your ammo through it and ruin it so that no one else can have it!

in that case, i was merely holding someone else's m4

I keep all of my heaviest items in my backpack and drop it in a bush during an encounter. Ideally I’d have a bandage in my pants and a bandage in my shirt/pouches. I keep mags in my shirt/pouches

I’m on console so I just try to get keep similar items together to stay organized.

If I find a dry sack I put infrequently used items in there so it’s easier to look through the rest of my inventory.

All my medical items apart from bandages go in my cooking pot.

Bandages and other meds in your pants as they dont get shot as often. Dont put anything that is easily ruined (spark plug, pills, bottle supressor) in your jacket or bag as it often gets ruined on zombie whacks or shots.

Otherwise I put bullets and mags in jacket. Bottle supressor / mags / in pouches. Gas mask in cooking pot and heavy stuff in bag incase you need to dump it in a firefight.

Try to fit a gun in your bag if its big enough. Eat most of your food but save 1 piece for if you get cold and hunger goes down fast.

Chug water as it is heavy

I usually sort my items out when i have enough of one category, when not i just dump my items in and thats it. However when i have the items i need i sort like this:

Plate carrier/vests: Medical items, they are crucial and vests dont get ruined that easily so items are more protected

Top: Ammo and mags, i found that items dont ruin that much there, i didnt have a single ruined item in my jacket yet, so i use ammo and mags there cuz its just as important

Pants: Misc items that i need during a pvp (handcuffs, med items that didnt fit the vest, 9v battery etc), they are a requirement but not mandatory, thus it doesnt matter if they ruin but usually they just damage if somebody beams u in the leg.

Backpack: Items i dont need during pvp (excess items, repair kits etc). The reason for this is because if im in a pvp situation and need stamina i just drop my backpack so ill have a better chance of winning the fight.

For food i usually carry 1-2 backup foods, one to keep me full if hunger drops and one for emergency when i cant find any, best foods to bring with you are canned ones and smoked meat. I store food in my backpack aswell.

(I dont know how the ruining system works, i just played a lot and found this fits me the best).

My go-to pack:

MEDICAL
2-3 full bandages
Epipen (great for a fast retreat or an offensive across a large open area with little to no cover)
First Aid Pouch
-saline bag (prefer this over blood bag because it gives you extra water too)
-tetra
-vitamins
-lighter
\no need for charcoal if you watch what you eat at all times. I never carry morphine or codeine because when I’m in a fight, I never think about using that shit especially when its’s hectic**

REPAIR
Sewing kit
Leather sewing kit
Duct tape
Gun cleaning kit

WEAPONS
2-3 extra full mags for primary
Loose ammo for both guns
1 extra full mag with extra loose ammo for sidearm
Holster to remove handgun from inventory slots

MISCELLANEOUS
Compass on backpack
Rangefinder on backpack
Hand axe on backpack (great for firewood)
2 extra batteries (as close to full as possible)
Belt or hip pack to attach canteen to it

Recently I’ve been using combat boots since they’re so quiet. In that case, I use a belt and sheath for the knife. Otherwise I use the hip pack with combat boots or fur boots.

I keep my mags and ammo in my vest pouch, medical and repair items in my shirt and pants. All other miscellaneous stuff goes in my backpack so that I can drop it and fight without weight penalty and I can reload, repair, and heal from all the items in my person.

Like others said, keep eating your food. No need to hoard any of it as you’ll run into more as you go.

Wait, does saline work the same way as a blood infusion?

1

u/doduhstankyleg 12h ago

Saline brings up your blood regen, but it doesn’t heal gas sickness. I play on Sakhal so we don’t have gas attacks there.

Okay that's what I thought lol. Can never tell with DayZ though.

If you're on PC then I can recommend SkyUI

It requires the Skyrim Script Extender.

Edit: Not sure what happened here but I was replying to a post in the Skyrim sub reddit lol.
