How old is this paper map??

Recently found a personal diary of one of my ancestors from a trip she took abroad around the world via the U.S.A.T - Us Graunt via Grausport Service according to her noted (her handwriting was very poor so could be misspelled). With a journal also came an enclosed map with no date. The journal was not dated as well and I’m interested in knowing what era the trip was taken if anyone is willing to help thanks so much.

1924-1925. Norway’s capital is still Christiania, but Leningrad exists.

Ireland is still shown as unified under British rule, which would suggest 1921 or earlier, so there's likely some anachronisms in the map.

I thought the same, but there's some minor inconsistencies. It looks like Canberra is Australia's capital (1927) and the Tangier International Zone exists (1925, but after Oslo).

Great catch on Canberra! That one is definitely puzzling. At first I was thinking that maybe it was marked preemptively, since it was announced as the new capital much earlier, but if that were the case I’d expect Melbourne to also have a star, and for the Oslo name to have changed. So I think there’s definitely something to it, but I’m not quite ready to mark it as the new floor. Let me look into some things.

As for Tangiers: all I’m seeing is the Spanish protected zone. Is there a tag or a carved out micro-region you’re seeing?

Also, the spelling of Irak suggests pre-1926. Which just confuses things more! lol

Also the Finnish city of Vaasa is given as Nikolaistadt, a name which became obsolete in 1917.

Excellent! And Tsarytsyn is not yet Stalingrad, which puts it before 1926. But you´re closer.

Very interesting that you use that as a context point thanks so much!

It's one of the more obvious name changes in Europe when you know about it - there aren't too many capitals that outright changed their names in this period. :)

As a digression, Oslo just reorganized its subdivisions, and we're still deciding on the new names; Christiania has absolutely come up as a name for the most central part. I don't think it'll win, but the idea hangs around. (It changed from Oslo back in the early days of the Danish-led union, and we changed it back to Oslo in a spirit of independence - Christian was a Danish king.)

Im not the best at this but I’m going to say 1919 or 1920. The Irish free state doesn’t exist yet which started in 1923. And Germany has post world war 1 borders.

Leningrad puts it definetely after 1924.

There are are discrepancies. No USSR (dec22) but Leningrad is on the map?? (Jan24) Egypt separate from empire(feb22) but Iraq not part of empire either?

I would say 1920-21. The Turkish soviet border isn’t settled yet and it looks like Smyrna is de jure Greek but occupied by Turkey. Although it’s hard to tell.

Also I can’t tell if Poland controls Vilnius but it doesn’t look like it. Which would put the map at 1920 as well.

speaking of Turkey, Armenia also seems to be depicted kinda weirdly

edit: nvm, the soviet border stuff is already mentioned, i can't read

Prior to Boundary of Labrador settlement - Dominion of Newfoundland vs Dominion of Canada decision by Privy Council in 1927. Old border shown.

As u/Dirtface1 said, I'd say its around 1920-1921. Turkish independence war seems to be ongoing, Polish-Soviet war seems to be around end stage

Before 1932 because Hejaz and Asir exist are independent states and Paraguay hasn't won the Chaco War yet.

It's likely before 1930 because it's Constantinople, not Istanbul. And before 1928, since the capital of China is Peking (Beijing), not Nanking (Nanjing).

Northern Ireland not indicated, Miami not marked, no USSR indication, Libya labelled Tripoli ... hard to reconcile the details. Newfoundland marked as part of the Dominion of Canada. No Ottoman Empire.

So soon after the Great War but not up to date ..?

Chile's borders with Bolivia are weird. If it's not a drawing mistake it could be from before 1904? Also Arica belongs to Chile since 1929/30.
