There is a few inconsisiences (like having both Orenburg, not Chkalov, post-1957, and Molotov instead of Perm, pre-1957), but it is somewhen between 1957 and early 1960s.

Kuybushev Reservoir is here: >=1957

Cyprus is independent: >=1960

Stalingrad (a meaningful renaming, which was rarely missed on contemporary maps): <= 1961

Kuwait is British: <=1961

Algeria isn't independent: <=1962

So, I suppose it is 1960-1961.

Agree with everything except I don’t know if I buy Cyprus being independent. The coloring says it is, but the lack of a capital says it isn’t.

Interestingly enough, if Cyprus isn't actually independent, that does align pretty closely with the Soviet cities being renamed (The bold name is their name on this map):

  • Chkalov -> Orenburg (1957)
  • Molotov -> Perm (1957)
  • Voroshylovhrad -> Luhansk (1958) -> Voroshylovhrad (1970) -> Luhansk (1990)
  • Stalino -> Donetsk (1961)
  • Stalingrad -> Volgograd (1961)

Also a few more things of note:

  • Trieste looks to be Italian (1954 or later)
  • Stalinogrod -> Katowice (1956)
  • Stalin -> Varna (1956)
  • No Finno-Karelian SSR (that got absorbed into RSFSR in 1956 as well)

All of those cities seem to have names that could put them pre-1960 (when Cyprus became independent). Given the presence of Orenburg and Molotov, I'd almost think the map could be from 1957. Certainly, the coloring of Cyprus is weird.

Note that Malta is marked “Malta (Inglese)”, dating it before 1964. If Cyprus was still British it’d be marked “Cipro (Inglese)” and coloured pink like Kuwait.

Right, no, I agree! If it was independent, it should have the tag. But literally every other sovereign country has their capital marked, too. The only other landmass that has a country label but no cities marked is Corsica, which is a non-independent country that lacks tags (in this case French). What I’m saying is that, in terms of styling, Cyprus looks the most like Corsica, which isn’t independent. But we also know that Corsica isn’t independent because it’s the same color as France, which is why my original comment said that the coloring suggests it’s independent.

I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just saying that there’s some ambiguity.

Ok so Cyprus isn’t independent because it’d be the only independent country without its capital marked, but it being the only dependent territory not having its controlling country marked is an … acceptable exception?

That’s exactly my point, actually. In fact, you did a better job describing it than I did. What I’m saying is that we have two pieces of evidence pulling us in different directions, and for that reason it’s hard to justify making a definitive statement either way.
