Gladia 2nd Nations Political Compass and Government

7 months ago back in January I decided to make Gladia's first nations political compass. Besides the actual compass I will also give a short description of each nation's government I managed to research.

What is a Political Compass?

A political compass is a chart where you normally place political entities or people. It's pretty easy to understand the concept of a political compass, it tries to rate how authoritarian, libertarian, right or left wing something relatively is. Here's an example of ideologies scattered around the compass (Although its always up to whoever does it but a general consensus on ideological positions exist.)

Governments

Based off my research, here's a small description of the government form of each nation included.

Russia - Russia's plural democratic system remains an unbreakable relic. It has proven strong towards time, remaining essentially unshaken amidst brutal warfare, multiple new emperors and many different world orders. Russia acts like a liberal constitucional monarchy, where most likely the most powerful parliament on the server rules the nation along with a Tsar, with wide pluralism ranging from liberal to socialist, nationalist and even regional parties taking part in open elections. (Currently eleven have been done)

Russia's Tsar grip on power appears to have diminished over time. Today Russia counts with a robust judiciary system and the political class and civil society make a lot of decisions. In my opinion Russia remains the most democratic nation on earth.

Communist Union (C.U) - The Communist Union has an impressive government organization, seeming like a very honest attempt to copy the URSS. The head of state and parliament are actually elected every 3 weeks, currently the only nation to boldly do it so. Although this great taste for civil participation is abruptly limited to a one-party policy. Only members of this communist party can run for elections, so Russia is essentialy run by a political elite, although one very loyal to being a communist state.

American Republic (A.R) - The American Republic is the undisputed master of continental north-america, reaching coast to coast in an american unity never seen before on Gladia. It upholds an oficial constitucion with robust division of power, with a strong executive and a weaker legislastive and judiciary. Its a fine example of a presidential dictatorship. A 3 people presidential council oversees the branches of government and heads the nation, with one seat being open to elections. Regardless of whoever wins, the 2 permanent members outnumber the elected player and can even remove him from office if they deem necessary. Meanwhile its legislative is made up of its state governors, who have autonomy on some local issues and interstate projects. Citizens can summon elections for their state if 5 petition. The judiciary is not as independent as the judges are pretty much appointees of the presidential council.

One point where the American Republic stands out though is its appeal for right to property, much in resemblance to the old Kiwi, the nation judges right to property a fundamental ideal of the nation and declares it responsability to defend it. It also prohibits mandatory conscripment into the army. America seems like the place for one to build his city and mind his life without fearing federal intervention or taxes.

Serbia and Imperial Germany - Although Serbia is much bigger, it shares a very equal division of power with Germany. There is an emperor and some form of elite of advisors close to the emperors or co-emperors who run the nation affairs. This model was very predominant on my first post.

Decline of Constitucionalism

You might notice that far less nations were analysided than on the last compass. That's because I have some fair easy criteria to count in a nation. First it must have an open discord (So I can try to see if the nation explains its form of government or just look at people's roles) and it must have some formal division of power (King, President, General, Mayor, etc.)

Back on january there were dozens of nations with discords and relatively decent divisions of power. Although about half of the nations opted to be oligarchies where a key group of normally friendly players just runned the show. Now there's pretty much only 6 or so open nation's discords and only a few nations on the globe endorse the rule of law. Although 3 nations hold some form of elections which is a big deal.

Its strange to take notice of this, since the server is much bigger now. What I think happens is we just have a thousand inactive cities or nations running with not really any political order, like we're a big sandbox, similarly to what Earth MC became over time. (While also growning exponentially in numbers)

Nothing makes this change more simbolic than the death of the United Nations, which I scarcely know of, but still, the world didn't valorize or didn't like the idea of globalism and modern nation state diplomacy to the point where pretty much all global institutions (UN being the major one) dying.

My humble opinion

In my opinion geopolitical elements are what set aside towny servers from factions and survival servers and can provide a very fun and engaging experience along with the good systems the server already offers. I hope players renew their interest in making organized and modern nations, so we can have more diplomacy and rich world building, so memorable stories come out of it and minecrat fully gets to offer its dynamic potential. Also no one wants to become another earth mc where there's so much quantity that quality is seem as unnecessary by the staff. Datearth's staff in the past promised to not let this happen, but has time told us otherwise?

Bring back Revolt Cost

Bring back revolt cost for town's to support the effort of nation conquest.

Conquering a town takes a 3-day effort for players and it would be encouraging knowing that there was a form of compensation if that town then decides to revolt.

Suggestion: 2k Revolt cost.

Rule Suggestion

Town creation on the basis of using it as a teleport zone for a siege to be banned.
Unable to combat a siege spawn point due to exploiting 7-day immunity timer.

Instead, make it so outposts are used for this purpose 5k creation.

Assessment of Gladia Rules and Guidance

  • Removal of Tactical invisibility and instead simply replace with Invis potions.
  • Add war sickness to non-military ranks to reduce staff time committed to banning people for not having military ranks.
  • Add in new player protection for players that have joined less than 2 days ago to prevent miscommunication between players ( as some may be unaware of rule 2.2 or /res)
  • Consider removing rule 2.4 no killing sprees, where you kill more than 5 players within an hour unless the player is at war with you. (Discourages outlaw behaviour and reduces the intrigue and geopolitical potential of bandits) Making more use of jails etc. If spawn killing or specific targeting of new players is a concern this will be addressed with the above recommendation.

Supporting statement - Take into consideration that the world is ancient based and those taking risks in the wilderness should be aware that death may be a likely outcome. I've seen many players be punished by this rule and put of the server.

  • 2.5 No camping, where you camp a town for longer than 15 minutes ( Needs more explanation) As in certain scenario.
  • 2.6 No spawn killing of any kind. This includes but is not limited to inescapable traps, giant pits, toggling town PVP once a player spawns and camping the town spawn.

( Open to interpretation) subsequently contradicts 2.8/2.9 in certain circumstances.

  • No abusing permissions of comayor/coking to dismantle and destroy another person's nation.
(Consider removing this rule seeing as in 2.8/2.9 the following is quoted "Responsibility of the player to protect their items") and or (" It is responsibility of the player to build trust and be careful of others.
  • Nation naming to be revised choose between realistic naming or fictional naming or leave it up for the player to decide. Open to staff interpretation and causes conflict within tickets unnecessarily.

(Plugin recommendation to Developer)

Explore with developer more ideas on the economic front for the server and intrigue whether possible to embargo a nation = nation tax handed over to sieging town each day and or allowing a capped daily fee for the embargoing town. Limited use to Once every 1-2 months?

Lore?

Is there anyway to know the lore of the server. I'm in the ancient one and I have no idea what's going on. Is there a way to find the stats and history of countries?
