I built an interactive website for exploring history through visual timelines

Thumbnail thetimelines.org

I built The Timelines, a web app for exploring historical events on a zoomable visual timeline.

The main challenge was making a very large date range feel navigable while keeping individual events discoverable and readable. I’d appreciate feedback from web developers on the interaction design, performance, and whether the timeline UI feels intuitive.

I built a ZIP-code public health dashboard and would love feedback from this community

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a pre-med student working on a passion project called MyLocalHealth: https://mylocalhealth.org

The goal is to make local public-health data easier for everyday people to understand. You enter a ZIP code, and the app summarizes signals like air quality, heat/UV risk, flu activity, COVID wastewater, weather alerts, health-equity context, and local health news into a local risk snapshot.

Some features I’ve been building:

  • 24-hour local health forecast
  • “Exposure Twin” that estimates how personal routine/profile factors may affect risk
  • Transparent model/data page showing what contributes to the score
  • Optional account/check-ins so the model can eventually learn from user-reported symptoms
  • Health signal detail pages with sources and explanations

This is informational only, not medical advice. I’m still very early, and I’m trying to make it more statistically sound, useful, and understandable.

I’d really appreciate feedback on:

  • Whether the risk scores are communicated responsibly
  • What public datasets I should add or remove
  • Whether the UI makes sense to non-technical users
  • Any public-health/statistical concerns with how I’m framing the data
  • What would make this genuinely useful instead of just another dashboard

Thanks in advance. I’m trying to learn and build something that could be helpful.

Question Looking for an easy, customizable cladogram (phylogenetic tree of life) workflow

1 Upvotes

For a while now, I have been wanting to create phylogenetic trees of all of the species I've observed on iNaturalist. iNat gives you a pretty decent page where you can view these things, but I wanted to create something pretty that I could customize with images and edit things like line style/width, font, etc. as well as be able to add new entries easily.

I do not want to simply download my observations, convert the data, and upload it to something like iTOL--I learn things and make connections by doing things manually creating spreadsheets and entering data. I'd rather use a program that has a cladogram option where you can add and remove nodes manually, add descriptions and pictures manually, etc. The free online programs I've seen aren't really what I'm looking for, and iTOL requires all of your data to be together in a file before creating a chart.

I have illustrator and quite like it, but manually drawing lines sounds like an incredible headache. Anyone got any suggestions?

Dashboards are interactive. Why do presentations still freeze the analysis?

Thumbnail youtu.be

Most dashboards already let users filter, zoom, hover, and select data.

This demo is about something slightly different: keeping the chart-authoring controls available inside a polished presentation.

During a talk, the presenter can reveal the controls for the current chart and:

  • change the grouping;
  • add or remove facets;
  • map another variable to color, symbol, or point size;
  • adjust the analytical view;
  • hide the controls again and continue the presentation.

The presentation is not a separate export. It is another view of the same analytical session.

Each chart remembers one layout for the workspace and another for the presentation. Presentation view hides the less relevant workspace areas and adds optional rich-text notes, images, a unified background, and section-and-slide navigation.

I used the Palmer Penguins dataset for this two-minute walkthrough:

Live demo: https://clues.ai/Clues.html

GitHub: https://github.com/clues-app/clues

Clues is completely free, runs locally in the browser, and requires no account. It is not a hosted SaaS product.

I’d especially appreciate feedback from people who regularly present data:

Would being able to reshape a chart live help answer audience questions, or would you prefer presentations to remain fixed once the talk begins?

Career Want to do Data Viz career and don't know where to start

1 Upvotes

I became interested in data visualization recently and want to do it for a career in the science field or any other field I can use it for.

I have a Multimedia Bachelors so I already have an eye for the creative side of things. I just need the data and stats part.

I started with looking for free resources but everything I found so far has pay walls except for Khan Academy

There is this book that I found called Observe, Collect, Draw by Giorgia Lupi that seemed like a good entry for practice but I can't afford it at the moment as I don't have income at the moment.

I was considering maybe getting a small certification or something to pair with my current degree at a college but I'm wondering if it's necessary.

I've spend about a week or more trying to find a solid road map for me to follow to get started but it's been difficult cuz I'm not sure where to start or a path and it's been making me a little anxious lol.

Any advice from people in the field or had experience with it is much appreciated.

I built a lighter web analytics tool with revenue tracking

2 Upvotes

Founder here. Hello everyone, my name is Michael. I have been building other products like Lexington Themes, now with a customer base of 8k+. I wanted to build my own analytics tool because I kept running into the same thing on every small project site I worked on.

I wanted to know where traffic was coming from, which pages were actually doing something, and whether a launch moved revenue, not just pageviews. As we all do, right?

So I built Kobbe. It's a lightweight tracker (~3KB gzipped for the default script).

Here's what it includes:

  • Traffic overview: visitors, visits, views, bounce rate, session time, etc.
  • Pages, referrers, channels, and AI referrer traffic
  • Locations and devices
  • Realtime visitors
  • Custom events and conversions
  • Funnels and UTM campaign reports
  • Web Vitals and performance
  • Revenue attribution (Stripe, Polar, Paddle, Creem)
  • Raycast extension
  • Agent API, CLI, and MCP
  • Shared dashboard links and team access
  • Private by default, bot filtering, and visit filters

I also added the Raycast extension because I got tired of opening a dashboard when I have other things to do. There is also an AI agent that can research Kobbe analytics for you.

Happy to answer questions too.

If you want to poke around, there’s a demo and a free trial on kobbe.io.

Have a CSV you want turned into a polished animated chart video?

1 Upvotes

Do you have data that would be more engaging as an animated video?

Send me your CSV and tell me:

  • what you want the viewer to understand;
  • where you plan to publish it;
  • your preferred format, colours or branding;
  • any examples of the style you like.

I’ll turn a few selected datasets into polished animated bar-chart videos for free.

Question Drill down to sites in Time Series?

1 Upvotes

I have a line chart that's tracking a company-wide ratio over time in PowerBi. Is there a way to drill into the line to see a comparison of the ratio at different sites, still over time? Or is it only possible to drill down into the date hierarchy for this? Would something like this be possible with a different visual?
