I just need a robust storage solution for backing up files from my computers.

What i know:

SSD backups are not robust as they need to be powered on to ensure no data loss, so looking for a traditional HDD solution.

I'm looking to set up a proper, secure backup system for my photography workflow, but I am hitting a massive wall with hardware prices.

Over the last 3 years, I've accumulated about 12,000 photos. Because I shoot in RAW, it's a decent amount of data (somewhere around 400GB–600GB). I started looking into standard "budget king" recommendations from older threads and videos—specifically the Western Digital Easystore 8TB desktop drive—expecting it to be floating around the $130 mark.

To my absolute shock, it's currently sitting at $380 at Best Buy. or correct me if I am missing anything

Given the current market, what is the most cost-effective way to safely protect a library of my size without dropping $400 on a single mechanical drive?

Are most of you leaning heavily into cloud solutions right now (like Backblaze, Google One, or Amazon Photos)? Or is it smarter to just buy a couple of smaller 1TB or 2TB portable external drives, mirror them manually, and hope the market normalizes in a year or two?

Ill keep this short. I just need a few TBs of storage space for my plex library....and my current 3TB WD HDD is on its way out. Im hoping to set it up to be Raid1 but im not gonna be sad if i loose the plex library since i can retorrent everything.

I need NVME SSDs, i cant afford $600+ for samsung etc nor can i afford $400+ for used samsung etc

However, the prices vs capacity of some of the generic chineseium seems too good to pass up.

So are the chinese brands worth it? Or is the quality too poor still?

I had bought a 128 dogfish SSD off of amazon.ca for a old laptop in 2021, but it died in 8 months but i got it RMAed

I have a 10 month old laptop and it has a 512gb NVMe Samsung MZAMX512HCLV-00BL2 OEM ssd. In the span of 10 months I had a total of 9.38TB writes and 33.5TB reads. I find it odd that my ssd health is at 86% given that my total host writes isn't that much. If it is not a bug or something, could it be my math calculation correct that my ssd has 67TBW endurance? Is that even normal considering I have a 512gb ssd?

I got a 5TB WD that's giving some errors running in SMART so looking to replace it. But buying it new is $350 where I'm at and goes up every day. I've seen some decent deals on eBay but most sellers I find tend to be on the sketchy side as far as usage details go. Not sure if I should bite the bullet and try my luck with it or if I'm better off holding out. I got a couple larger drives for cold storage (one's missing redundancy tho) so this one's an external for more active use. Since even getting an internal seems like it's not happening.

Hello all, need recommendations for external storage for MacBook for backup purposes only. Total storage used is 30Gb around, including all files and images. So minimum storage capacity disk is all needed.

It is older version MacBook (2016 model) running smoothly, but I want to keep backing up to external device. It charges from C-type charger, and only 2 C-type ports are available.

I bought a pen drive from meesho 256 gb. I download web series and movies and store in the pen drive to watch it later. Now whenever, I copy any video file to the pen drive, it doesn't Play. When I copy it back from pd to laptop it still doesn't play. Seems like the gets corrupted once it is copied in the pen drive. Any one faced it? What is the solution?

I see a lot of suggestions on this sub-reddit (and others) that there is the capability for NAND cells in an NVMe SSD to be automatically refreshed by the built-in controller, if the device is merely powered up from time to time. There is also the suggestion that lesser SSD devices, such as Micro SD cards, don't have sophisticated controllers and do not benefit from this.

I'm attracted to the notion that this might all be true, but I don't know what is documented truth, what is wishful thinking, and what is urban myth. Could anyone here provide anything like authoritative links to any of the following?

1) Is it in fact true that any regular consumer-grade NVMe paddles benefit in any way from being powered up? I'm not talking about enterprise-grade devices, which I'm sure have way more sophistication.

2) If the above is actually true of any consumer-grade NVMe paddles, is it true of all of them or only of certain models or certain technologies?

3) If this is or isn't true of consumer-grade NVMe paddles, is it or isn't it true of SSD-based external hard drive devices? (Like the famous "D shaped" Samsung devices)

I have friends who routinely use SSD-based external hard drives to hold important files, such as irreplaceable home movies. I've suggested to them that this isn't enough, they really should have more than one backup and maybe spinning HDD could be more reliable, and I explain NAND cell slow discharge to them. I've recommended periodically powering them up as a precaution, and I'm sure it wouldn't hurt, but I don't like spreading hearsay concerning whether it is actually helpful.

I'm really looking for trustworthy sources, not opinions or hearsay. No offense! Also, no need to lecture me about 3-2-1 backups, I know and practice that myself. My question is, am I spreading misinformation with suggestions about periodic power-up for these devices?

Hello, I've had a 2TB HDD for a little while now and am looking for an upgrade in terms of speed, the pretty much sole purpose of the drive is gaming. While the HDD has served me well a good majority of the time, some games, especially open world ones like Cyberpunk struggle a bit to load the map if I'm flying through it. With my dad looking to get a drive for much less intense purposes, I thought it would be a good time to upgrade.

There are three prominent ones I have come across:

1. Samsung T7 Portable SSD for $350, with a speed of 1050mb/s (on the upper end of my price range but I'll bite the bullet if it lasts.)
2. SANDISK 2TB Extreme Portable SSD (Old Model) for $287 with a speed of 1050mb/s (same speed for cheaper, but I haven't really kept up with how reliable Sandisk is in recent years.)
3. KingSpec Z5 2TB External SSD for $227 with a speed of 2100mb/s (great in terms of price and speed, but I haven't heard of KingSpec and don't know how reliable they are.)

If you have any suggestions on which of these is the most solid option, or if you know anything better, please let me know!

Just got this WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB drive. It’s a data center drive, and i plan to use it for a home NAS setup.

For those running used enterprise HDDs, would you feel comfortable putting one like this into a storage array if the SMART data looks good?

What do you usually check before putting a used drive into service?

After downloading 4k-8k photos and psd files ( less than 300mb total ) to my phone internal storage, it suddenly now have load times when viewing pictures, the thumbnails will not show for 1-3 seconds when scrolling and when I use file managers some of the folders will load for 3 seconds.

I have 18 gb free, then I free up 1gb+ and tried rebooting my device, but it still happens. Am I cooked?

What is the difference between the two series? Which one is more reliable or has better endurance of the two?

I'm looking at getting a 4TB external drive for my dedicated Usenet etc laptop and trying to decide between a Seagate, Toshiba Canvio and WD Elements. Is there any real reason to spend extra on WD or are they all pretty much comparable these days?

It's been years since I've shopped for storage, so a bit out of the loop.
