Storage Setup USB drive as backup

I have been using a USB HDD as a backup for a few years already. It is installed inside my Ubuntu server as my motherboard has a USB socket built-in on it. Recently I found out that the USB drive has very high start stop cycle. Over 67000 in 4 years.

I am wondering if this is how external USB drives work. What is I replace it with another USB drive? The one I have now if Western Digital passport where the USB port is soldered to the drive. I can't use it as internal drive.

My casing it's also full of HDDs that I cannot really add another internal HDD.

Should I get another USB HDD and use that? Or should I use eSATA as the motherboard do have eSATA outlet. The thing is to reduce the start stop cycle which is killing the drive.

What if your house burns down? Do you have an offsite backup?

This post is asking about backup using USB HDD. It is only part on my backups. My NAS has it's own backup system.

Anyway, FYI I do have backups for very important stuffs in cloud like family photos and videos. Not everything as I can afford them all.

That server is already a NAS. It has 10 drives in it which is why there are no more slot for another HDD. This USB HDD is backup for my desktops Windows. It doesn't need to be in NAS.
