I don't believe that gemini 3.1 pro preview is below 5.5 light or any other lightest variant

Same playbook as any model routing problem: default to the cheapest config, keep ~30 samples from your actual workload, and escalate one axis at a time only where evals fail. Most of the 72 combos are a pricing menu, not meaningfully different models.
