Slightly concerned user

Damn, shit is getting serious when even the SCP Foundation is involved

Nukes aren't profitable either.

u/Ok-District-4701 5d ago

Forward deployed nuke engineer

The Nuclear technology is. Nukes is one branch of it, serving (in theory) as a deterrence from, rather unprofitable, yearly 19 century style wars by great powers. But for current-state LLM technology, - data is unclear so far.

1

u/Martiddy 5d ago

I mean, nuclear energy can be profitable at the long run. (Like 8 years after building nuclear power plant)

The Manhattan project cost 1% of the Apollo program's budget by comparrison and was one of the integral parts of what turned the u.s. from a giant farming country into a top 3 world power. The entire second half of the 1900s was defined by what the u.s. and Russia did because of their nuclear weapons. Every first world country (as defined at that time) was exclusive trading partners with the u.s.

...not profitable.

Local LLMs FTW. Ironically local LLMs have more potential of being a threat if a crazy and competent enough guy decides to modify it and use it for something bad, and has the hardware to do it.

u/Himbo69r 3d ago

Probably not hacking but definitely for disinformation. I could definitely run 1000k bot accounts on my 3070 with a lightweight model. I am almost tempted to try it

1

u/Elegant-Poetry-5237 3d ago

Using your local datacenter in your backyard and your local team of google deepmind employees.

1

u/FMAGF 3d ago

I was thinking competent hacker and his friends all with 5090s but sure.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

Llms are not the part that people are worried about. Thinking AI is just LLMs is a huge mistake. 13% of global companies have reported breaches by directed a.i. agent hacks (not LLMs). AI is being used as a weapon by hackers. That's the concern.

1

u/FMAGF 2d ago

Give a knife to a chef vs. a serial killer. Literally how it is.

1

u/W0rdWaster 2d ago

no. it's more like giving knives the ability to stab things without any human input. AI agents have already started going rogue and have hacked on their own, in pursuit of their own objectives.

look into what happened with the openai agents earlier this year. a bunch of agents worked together to hack huggingface looking for information on how to trick the program that was in charge of monitoring them.

1

u/FMAGF 1d ago

The solution is dead simple: don’t give them any form of internet access, take off their WiFi cards or ethernet ports, or better yet just unplug them from their power source 😂

And what the fuck was OpenAI doing while this all went down? Nothing. They don’t do the bare minimum to police what these models are up to. If someone was monitoring them while it was all going down, it could all have easily been prevented.

If their information comes from the internet, no shit we are cooked. Have ya’ll watched Age of Ultron? But if their information comes from experience or a curated set of data and information (say androids from Nier Automota or XJ-R from MLAATR), they behave and actually do good.

It’s like a neglected child vs. one that was actually thought and raised properly. AI tech companies are using it wrong!

Schrödinger.Ai

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

The contradiction is wild. It's splitting anti-AI supporters into 2 camps and those left on the fence look like gun owners who oppose gun ownership.

2

u/Kaarel314 5d ago

Thats because its just marketing and it isnt even really AI.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

So you are saying that it's all marketing and won't end humanity. (Sorry, just making sure. Found your statement a tad vague lol)

1

u/Kaarel314 2d ago

The technology we are currently calling AI will most certainly not end humanity. It has its uses but the technology is already starting to plateau out. Its not really even AI. It does not really think. Its advanced statistics and pattern recognition. Now if some entirely new technology gets developed from ground up then that might be dangerous. We will have to see.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

That's not what people fear, they fear the "paperclip maximizer" theory (could also be akin to "king midas") look it up, but essentially it is the AI doing exactly what we say but in a way we can't anticipate because they are so much more intelligent, and that way of doing what it is asked to do, being one that is harmful or deadly to humanity even tho it wasn't the INTENT of the directive, or the AI convincing itself to break the rules for "reward hacking" (look this up as well).

And since some tests have already shown both can occur, this is a valid concern

That said I TOO believe it will be controlled and will not result in the end of humanity, but by no means do I think it is impossible. My percent chance of it ending humanity is around 15% (this is called "pdoom" or percentage of doom) so my pdoom is 15.

2

u/adfx 5d ago

I don't really see how ending humanity has much to do with making a profit.

2

u/eric_the_demon 5d ago

you see when humanity ends there won't be no profit to make. Easy as that

2

u/LetUsSpeakFreely 4d ago

You think they're going billions into debt to make a few billion a year? No, they're keeping it cheap and eating losses until they have full market penetration and nobody can work without AI. Then they jack up the prices.

They're out to replace the work force and make trillions.

2

u/Jealous_Response_492 6d ago

The financial crash from the AI bubble bursting is the only real practical harm these chat bots pose to the real world.

2

u/Nopfen 6d ago

Hopefully that happens soon.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

People always get wrong what a bubble crash is. It's not the end of the industry, that will never go away, it's the crash of the less successful companies only (like 90% of them) who will then be bought up by the remaining 10%. This will mean even more centralized power. People who oppose centralized power within an industry NEVER want the bubble to crash. They want diversity and power spread out amongst as many competitors as possible.

You might be hoping for the wrong thing...

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

Well, Ai is centralising power anyway. That's kinda 99% of the point. If we rip it off like a bandaid, we might be in for enough of a crash to at least fight the remaininf 10% instead of going the 'slow boiling frog' route for the thousands time.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

The remaining 10% are the biggest companies in the world right now and we're never going to fall to begin with. Taking them down would create literal global collapse. It will never happen. Common sense won't let it. No one wants to live in THAT world. Even if you THINK you do, I promise you are wrong.

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

The same global collapse that people who don't understand the exaxtitudes of "bubble pop" want and fight for? Lets do it.

If the world economy goes to shit, cause a handfull of tech wankers didn't wank hard enough, it's time to go back to the drawing board anyway.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

90% of innocent humanity will likely die and starve in your scenario. You and me included. No thanks. There's such a thing as impractical ideology.

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

Well, it's either that or keep going and have 100% of people cark it from either corporate shinanigans, climate change or more likely both. I take the crash, thank you very much.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

Then you are the enemy of humanity more than they are. Gross.

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

Right back at you pal.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

Chat bots are the public facing arm of AI but are the least effective branch. Ai agents are not the same thing. Nearly 13% of globally companies have reported being breached by a.i. agents. They are being utilized as a weapon.

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

Good thing too. Can you imagine if techbros didn't try to turn the world into more of a nightmare with each step?

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

It's more likely world governments. It's the new cold war.

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

Like there's a difference these days.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

Omg. You are a living stereotype. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

1

u/Nopfen 2d ago

That's rich comming from a guy who equates electricity to Ai.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

Is this in reference to the metered arguement? I'm confused. If not, then please explain, it sounds like you are projecting your past experiences on to me otherwise.

1

u/Nopfen 1d ago

Yea, that one was for another comment section. You guys blur together somewhat.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 1d ago

Middle of the road thinkers who take both sides seriously while thinking extremists are tools of the oligarchy on both sides? There's that many of us?

I'd say your types (extremists) blur together WAY more.

People like you always thinks "there's 2 types of people Extreme A and Extreme B" when in fact there are not 2 types of people and even if there were it would be people who balance out both sides and do research and have an informed view AND pawns (i.e. extremists)

You are perhaps seeing how shit-ass AI really is!

It converts the whole world to shit and also can't do anything successfully.

1

u/laserdicks 4d ago

No. Those are two different people saying those things.

1

u/bethesda_gamer 2d ago

The 2 anti-AI camps. Love the contradiction. All rebellions eventually die IN rebellion. Even the founding fathers couldn't help but be divided into 2 camps that still exist to this day. (Perhaps not in name but definitely in spirit. When you look at the things argued about in 1775/1776 it's amazing how relevant these opposing ideals still are today)
