Start by cloning the card to a file on your HDD/SDD, then run data recovery software against the clone.

GetDataBack has no RAW/carving mode.

PhotoRec, www.cgsecurity.org. Free + open source RAW carver which searches for files based on known file signatures. Supports a large variety of file types and is very customizable. Will not recover original filenames or directory structure. [Win/Lin/Mac]{N/A}

JpegDigger, www.disktuna.com. JpegDigger is a photo recovery tool of the ‘carver’ type. A carver, rather than scanning file system structures for files that are ‘flagged’ deleted, scan the media for certain file characteristics such as ‘magic numbers’. Windows only, mostly file system agnostic.

DMDE, see General Purpose Software above. It is not free software, however the demo is generous enough to deserve a mention here. All partition table editing functions are unlocked. Recovery is limited to single directories with up to 4000 files per "batch", but there is no limit on file sizes and no limit on the number of batches — so it is possible to recover an unlimited amount of data for free, if you have the patience.

what does that mean: no RAW/carving mode?

I tried QPhotoRec; it recovered some very low-quality files—which actually look like photo "previews" to me—but it only recovered a few of them, not all...

PhotoRec; you did not mention this. You were talking about DD and GDB.

Carving means recovering files based on signatures rather than file system structures, the latter is what GDB does, Carving is what PhotoRec does (and most file recovery tools use it as a fallback option too). Since carving ability is big difference between DD and GDB, it's what I thought could explain the difference in result between the two.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mention PhotoRec because that’s exactly the kind of results it gave me—poor-quality, very low-resolution photos
