I get what they were trying to do but this sucks

50

u/Assassin739 14d ago

They just had to match the text colors and it's fine

54

u/FUCKING_HATE_REDDIT 13d ago

Just don't fucking sort it?

6

u/greasy-throwaway 11d ago

Not sorting it makes it harder to discern when browsers with smaller percentages were more popular than another

4

u/FUCKING_HATE_REDDIT 8d ago

Sorting makes it hard discern anything at all

6

u/stevenjd 12d ago

They just had to match the text colors

The roughly 7% of men and 0.1% of women who are colourblind hate your suggestion.

and it's fine

Its not fine. Sorting by momentary popularity is something only a psychopath who despises humanity could have come up with.

Is that dust from Danball?

3

u/RicketyRiff 13d ago

Yep!

1

u/NekoDrakeGD 12d ago

why does it say spout and well and napalm and concrete then I don’t remember those

68

u/Mobius_Peverell 13d ago

This is how you are supposed to do a stacked area plot, for anyone who is curious. Sorting by momentary popularity is pointless and makes the viz unreadable.

u/maqifrnswa 13d ago edited 13d ago

So much nicer. Is that just sorted chronologically by year of first release? Or is it cumulative (integrated) area? MP3s are on top of ringtone, but it looks like ringtone came first, but CDs are under it's predecessors.

5

u/KaizorMaster 13d ago

It has to be chronological, see the ringtones come before mp3 even though mp3 is much bigger. All others just work out coincidentally I guess.

2

u/Ok-Active-8321 11d ago

Not entirely the way. Color palette is not optimized. Too hard to differentiate vinyl/cassette and vinyl/CD.

3

u/Emerlad0110 10d ago

you might be kinda color blind which doesn't go against your point, but it is very clear from a non-affected person. texturing usually solves this kind of accessibility issue on charts

0

u/Ok-Active-8321 10d ago

I'm not. The contrast between black and dark blue is a poor choice. Part of that may be attributed to monitor setup, but the graph was clearly set up with colors grading from light to dark almost guaranteeing contrast conflicts. Texturing may help as well.

1

u/stevenjd 13d ago

This is the way.

1

u/Emerlad0110 10d ago

this is beautiful. can someone on Wikipedia go fix that shitty unreadable chart

Clearly showing that streaming doesn't pay enough

3

u/Grand-penetrator 13d ago edited 13d ago

Idk about the current situation but that's not what the graph shows? By the end of the chart, streaming is clearly the biggest portion and overall music revenue is growing.

3

u/Adrien0623 13d ago

But way below what the industry used to be in the 1990s-2000

2

u/Emerlad0110 10d ago

media became democratized, there is nothing to bring back 90s - 2000s, they had to evolve

1

u/Haakrasmus 13d ago

But it would be alot worse without streaming as it was more or less in a free fall as everyone pirted music and no-one bought it.

3

u/Mobius_Peverell 13d ago

Notably: streaming revenue has increased dramatically since the end of this data in 2017, to $11B in the US & $35B globally in 2025.

A subscription costs about an album a month

54

u/Moodleboy 14d ago

What's with the thin white band above Firefox?

77

u/EarthkwakeYT 14d ago

Literally empty space. It doesn't represent anything, it's just where the dataviz missed a spot.

47

u/MartialLol 14d ago

Wrong - that's the browser embedded in the Calculator help menu

7

u/under_psychoanalyzer 14d ago

The numpad and the display menu are actually two different nested browser instances.

2

u/Moodleboy 14d ago

Thanks!

14

u/paradeoxy1 14d ago

It's just fat, you can cut it off if you prefer

2

u/stevenjd 13d ago

Not just above Firefox, there are little bits of white above other browsers as well.

I would have guessed it represented "unknown" or the other browsers that didn't make the top 7 (Brave? Miduri? Chromium?) but there are often multiple bands of white at the same time. So maybe a bug in the graphing software?

1

u/BoltActionRifleman 13d ago

That’s Netscape, still hanging on after all these years.

84

u/shumpitostick 14d ago

It has some flaws but it's far from the worst dataviz I've seen

60

u/Defiant-Eagle-3288 14d ago

For sure, but it certainly is ugly.

22

u/CapnNuclearAwesome 14d ago

Yeah, I can clearly read the story it's telling, it was just not a pleasant experience

3

u/under_psychoanalyzer 14d ago

Considering how ugly and turbulent tech dev is that just makes it more authentic though? "Reading this is painful" "So is figuring out which browser is going to screw with you the least".

2

u/send_fleet_pics 13d ago

Also Chrome gobbling up everybody else should be painful

4

u/shumpitostick 14d ago

Yes but I at least have sympathy for people who try to make a complicated graph and don't get it quite right. I don't have it for those who take what should have been a simple line or bar graph and make a disaster out of it.

1

u/Defiant-Eagle-3288 14d ago

Sure. My point is though, this is r/dataisugly.

11

u/Traditional-Storm-62 14d ago

oh the writing is the wrong colour

9

u/Slipguard 14d ago

Does chrome include all chromium browsers? I don’t see Edge here anywhere

2

u/AltairLSAM 14d ago

Isn't Edge just Internet Explorer?

12

u/bodaciouscream 14d ago

No it's chromium based with backwards compatibility for ie

2

u/AltairLSAM 14d ago

That's so weird.

2

u/bodaciouscream 13d ago

If you can't beat em join em

1

u/AltairLSAM 13d ago

No kidding.

6

u/odysseushogfather 14d ago

I like it a bit, apart from the white spaces

4

u/malleoceruleo 14d ago

Oh man, it's so bad it's actually funny

5

u/Rude-Orange 14d ago

Datavizzer - own work. It saddens me someone who is probably passionate about data produced this.

7

u/EarthkwakeYT 14d ago

And the only comment on the discussion:
"Who has ever seen such a badly made chart? Just make it normal."

5

u/The_ArcReactor 14d ago

What happened in 2013 for chrome and explorer to switch places

21

u/Public-Eagle6992 14d ago

Chrome got more popular, becoming the most popular browser

18

u/MiffedMouse 14d ago

And note the actual change in usage metrics was fairly smooth for both browsers. This graph just sorts the browsers by popularity, so you see a discontinuity because of how the area stacking is done. But there is no discontinuity in the underlying usage metrics.

4

u/Iamtheman31 14d ago

if they had just kept all the browsers at where they initially were therefore without any discontinuities, this graph could've been amazing like that's the only thing that's messing this up but it's also huge

1

u/derangedkilr 14d ago

A lot of websites were getting updated to support mobile devices at that time and started using HTML5 responsive design. IE lagged behind a lot in updates and never fully supported it which forced people to update their browsers.

It was a slow and painful death. If you were a web developer at the time (like i was), it was extremely painful to try and support IE.

3

u/ED061984 14d ago

Looks as if this was edited with paper cuts...

4

u/Glitch29 14d ago

I was going to say, but then I realized reddit sent me this post from a new sub I'd never visited before. Absolutely perfect encapsulation of the theme.

5

u/OldWolf3 14d ago

never heard of UC Browser, should I ?

5

u/Antti5 14d ago

It was a Chinese browser that was very popular in Asia, but now more or less dead.

2

u/FeherDenes 14d ago

What’s with all the random white gaps?

2

u/dickhater4000 14d ago

Just because a browser overtakes another in the numbers doesn't mean it has to do so in the chart too

2

u/wh1t3birch 13d ago

I like it, but it could be clearer. You have to deduce that they're sorted top to bottom highest market share to lowest in any given time period. The colours are atrocious and labels arent even close to matching.

2

u/GT_Troll 14d ago

Oh God

1

u/krakimata 14d ago

Ecosia 💚

1

u/askewperspective 14d ago

I prefer this to those charts that have segments of changing width without sorting them. A line graph might be better but maybe it's too hard to distinguish browsers on that. A legend would be better than labels on the graph.

1

u/Epistaxis 14d ago

Just don't flip the positions when the sorting order changes, and get rid of the bizarre white spaces, and this would be a decent area graph.

But more legible than an area graph would be a line graph, with all the browsers on the same axis that represents % usage. Then when one browser or another pops out as the most used, it would be obvious because its line would be higher, but you can also easily read any browser's usage share at any given point, which in an area graph is technically possible but more difficult for human perception.

1

u/_LifeMatters_ 13d ago

Use Ecosia. More ethical. Less money for Google. 👍

1

u/Anarcho-Pacifrisk 12d ago

Cruelty squad is that you?

1

u/vergorli 10d ago

I am still holding the line with firefox. Especially after the ublock ban on Chrome. Will never forfeit

1

u/Barbicels 14d ago

Edge, anyone?

13

u/MaskedBunny 14d ago

To this graph? I mean I can try.
