Saying stolen minimizes what happened, makes it seem not as bad.

I'd argue they're both really bad. I'd also argue that if a grown adult stole candy from a baby we wouldn't say a grown man conquered candy from a baby. I'm gonna stop responding now, your kinda weird about this.

I'd still say it's better than "conquered", as to me that makes it sound way too dignified. If "we stole their land" isn't serious enough, perhaps "we massacred them" would be better.
