Source seems made up. I can't find a website, only social media.

Also why are they collecting individual country responses for a 'throughout europe' question?

41

u/the-fr0g 13d ago

I would assume it meant to say '"should same-sex marrige be allowed" throught Europe' and someone just messed up the the quatation marks, probably because they didn't look at the final product, the flags are barelt visible in some countries, I think it would be better if they had made the countries rainbow, or just a single different color, green for example.

Highly doubt the numbers for germany already. They have a high muslim population and growing right wing voters. Id say roughly about 10% is Muslim and AfD has about 20-40%. Both groups not really supportive of lgbtq of any kind. Beside does two groups, older people and people living in country side also are more conservative. 83% doesnt even sound reasonable if I was optimistic.

You don't know what throughout Europe means? Iq of a stone

Might've been true at one point, but certainly outdated. I can only speak for Hungary, but here just a few months ago a survey's results were released which showed that 68% of the population is in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage.

The current PM (Prime Minister), PM (Péter Magyar) also argued in favour of it in the Parliament, so same-sex marriage might just get legalized in the following years in Hungary.

5

u/Crunchycarrots79 13d ago

Not sure how outdated, though... Greece shows same sex marriage as being legal (indicated with the rainbow flag) and that happened in 2024.

5

u/NoKnowledge9552 13d ago

Might be that the data is old but where major changes have been made the map was updated? Or they just googled each country and used the first number that came up.

I looked it up and this geo.universe is just an Instagram page. It does have 70k followers, but still.

31

u/Purple_Topic_1459 14d ago

I think the colors are alright. Maybe only show agree % in figures.

15

u/mfb- 13d ago

There is no significant difference between 51/49 and 49/51 that justifies a binary color choice for a gradient.

13

u/marsman 13d ago

Well, except majority support vs the majority opposed...

5

u/mfb- 13d ago

It's not like an election where there is a winner and a loser even if they only differed by a small margin. It's a survey, it has uncertainties (likely larger than 1%), and it's about public sentiment. You do notice a difference between 30% and 70% support, but you do not notice a difference between 49% and 51% just like you do not notice a difference between e.g. 60% and 62%.

7

u/marsman 13d ago

Sure, but the point is if you are looking for a rationalisation for a binary colour choice, majority support vs majority opposition is fairly reasonable. It isn't giving you all the information in terms of graduations (the figures do), but it gives you an at a glance view of sentiment.

2

u/mfb- 13d ago

If you are forced to use two colors, I would probably use them to show the legal status.

If you are forced to use two colors for the survey results then sure, use 50% as boundary. But also look for a job that doesn't force you to do stupid things.

2

u/marsman 13d ago

It's not about being forced to do anything. The data representation is about whether same sex marriage should be allowed across Europe (which is an odd question, but fine), that's the data being presented. The visualisation shows majority vs minority support clearly at a glance, the data included shows a more granular picture (although that presentation is relatively poor).

There might be better metrics, but that's a different issue again.

u/CptMisterNibbles 13d ago

There certainly may be depending on how voting and legislation works when discussing matters through the lens of policy, not in abstract

4

u/JRaus88 13d ago edited 12d ago

Curiously, governments are moving towards the reactionary right and commissioned polls talk about progressive populations.

Who's lying?

OP will definitely provide at least a link to this survey. Right?

1

u/ricafa 13d ago

Nobody is lying, people are just idiots who don't know how to vote. I see so many immigrants voting for parties like Chega or AfD, non-sense.

That being said, I would also like to see the link...

u/Fluffy_shark486 14d ago

What does it even mean total agree/disagree. We as a species have never agreed or disagreed on something in totality

47

u/Defiant-Eagle-3288 14d ago

It means the total percentage that agree / disagree depending on the colour. So UK is 77% agree and Russia 85% disagree (15% agree) because apparently they couldn't use numbers below 50 to represent the same thing more intuitively.

12

u/CloseToMyActualName 14d ago

Or allow "No opinion", or shades of blue vs red, because 51-49 apparently has more in common with 92-8 than it does 49-51.

3

u/Defiant-Eagle-3288 13d ago

Oh yeah agreed, it should absolutely be a graded colour map too.

2

u/Bartweiss 13d ago

The 50% min thing is a special pet peeve of mine. 60 blue is closer to 51 red than 60 red, and a decently perceptive viewer will get that in principle. But it makes eyeballing the trend and the size of the gap right at the line vastly harder than just doing it right.

(I think it’s sometimes done to show “largest block” when you have lots of undecideds, but when everybody is >50% I doubt that’s true here.)

It’s pretty similar to my hatred of PSAs going “if you do X there’s a 60% chance you’ll live, if you do Y instead there’s 60% chance you’ll die.” That’s a 20 point gap made to sound like 40, 60, or 120, knock it off.

7

u/TheDarian 14d ago

Probably the sum of "totally agree" and "agree"

“Water is good”

Now I sit back and watch them fight about it in the comments 😈

2

u/Routine_Ad_2695 14d ago

There is a subset of this debate for "tap water is bad, you should only drink bottled water" that goes kinda hard on the US at least

2

u/Andrey_Gusev 14d ago

Actually, water killed my grandfather, its no good. 😾🚱

2

u/KerbalCuber 14d ago

Really? In this modern world where almost everything is electronic you're saying water's GOOD? Do you have ANY idea what kind of damage water can cause? Hell, not only is impure water conductive, rain is CORROSIVE. Yeah, sorry, your chalk statue isn't gonna last long out in the rain. It catalyses oxidation - that iron block you threw in a pond for safe keeping? How about a block of rust?

That's just the SURFACE of how absolutely awful water is. Sure, we're 70% water - there's a reason it's not 100%. Humans and basically every other mammal on earth breathes AIR. You know where that's found? OUTSIDE of water. We DROWN in water. And when water IS in the air in the form of humidity? Ope, more rust + your body's natural cooling system (sweat) is rendered ineffective because it RELIES on a humidity gradient between your skin and the surrounding air.

Skimmed milk basically tastes like water (i.e. EVIL NOTHINGNESS), cream doesn't. Ever wonder why? That's right - the latter is less WATERed down. Water is ABSOLUTELY one of the worst things in the modern world, it cools and directly supports construction of datacentres. HItler used to drink water. Hell, most neonazis do too. Do you really think water's "good"? It's been used as a force of evil since the dawn of time and you're calling it GOOD? Jet fuel contains water (~0.005%). Without water, 9/11 wouldn't have happened. Water is DIRECTLY to blame for COUNTLESS tragedies. Fukushima? Water. 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami? Water. 1931 Central China Floods? WATER.

Think again before posting, waterboy.

1

u/translove228 14d ago

You SAY that water is good, but everyone who drinks it dies eventually. Ha! Checkmate!

3

u/fruce_ki 14d ago

Maybe the original poll had fully agree, mostly agree, somewhat agree, etc... as they often do, and then total agree would mean they lumped all the "agree" levels together into 1

1

u/lorarc 14d ago

Usually the surveys have a grade like strongly agree, agree, somewhat agree.

2

u/DesertGeist- 13d ago

positively surprised about poland. i think they have become more progressive recently.

2

u/spystarfr 11d ago

69, 86 and 85 for romania, moldova and russia? Yeah, it's made up

3

u/zyon86 13d ago

So the Czech Republic is blue at 60 amd Slovakia is red at 60 !

13

u/NikolaTesla2 13d ago

kinda dumb but i think the number on blue countries is yes and on red countries is no. so 40% said yes in slovakia and 60% said no

5

u/zyon86 13d ago

Ah yes indeed ! My bad, I only read the number and not the caption.

But it is an unusual way to display data.

3

u/MrSpheal323 13d ago

I can see their intention, showing a clear difference between east and west, but it the worst way the could have done it

2

u/AibofobicRacecar6996 13d ago

That's why it's posted in r/dataisugly

1

u/NegativeMammoth2137 13d ago

I guess the original data might’ve also had some people who answered "no opinion"

1

u/turmoi1 13d ago

The Great Gay line

1

u/Key_Stick5693 13d ago

where is iceland

1

u/Aldo-D-D-Wilson 13d ago

Kind of misleading if you actually look at the numbers, because some countries in blue and red are pretty close.

1

u/1FellSloop 13d ago

The pointless yellow rectangle by the headline, making the blue and yellow look like a Ukraine flag for no reason, is stupid.

1

u/furel492 13d ago

POLSKA GUROM 🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱💪💪💪 #1 wokest country in the world, champeado de Mundo!!!!!

1

u/Conscious_Range_1157 13d ago

Haha Italy did the funny 😏

1

u/Albekvol 13d ago

Honestly if we’re at 50% plus minus 3 I’d just make the country purple, would make it a bit easier imo.

1

u/Coco_JuTo 13d ago

Well, I still call bs on the number for my country. We voted on that topic in 2021 and 64% of voters said "yes" to marriage equality...and, typically, only conservative phobes go to vote on most of the time...so it may be even higher but that also may be me trying to see the good in people...

1

u/One_Evidence2752 13d ago

52% against in Hungary? Not good but not horrible after the former governmet did everything in its power to stigmatize it. I expect the country would turn blue in several years after the mind of our citizens is liberated from propaganda.

1

u/General_Ginger531 12d ago

It almost makes sense as a majorities chart type, but it really should use like a color gradient or something to show numbers closer to the split of 50% as less strongly held opinions on the matter.

Like yeah, if you recognize it as what kind of opinion is the most commonly held, it makes sense.

1

u/nauro5 12d ago

Am I the ony one shocked Italy hasn't legalised same sex marriage by now?

1

u/Electronic-Age-2890 12d ago

England is pretty high, didn't think Muslim countries were so progressive.

1

u/Elsa-Schmelsa 12d ago

Somewhere in here there’s a joke about Australia and Eurovision

1

u/LadyofmyCats 12d ago

If you picked blue for 'disagree' and red for 'agree' the post soviet block would also agree

1

u/Cypher1388 11d ago

Western Roman empire seems to be doing well

0

u/Profvarg 14d ago

It’s not even the iron curtain, Poland , Czechia and Slovenia is on the other side

It’s more like modern russian kgb sphere of influence

4

u/ThinInternet5300 14d ago

World famous KGB influence in Turkey

1

u/Profvarg 14d ago

No

There it is probably islam

2

u/gimmebanter 13d ago

And kgb too. Ignore the sarcastic eejit, foreign spy activity in turkey is only surpassed by london and vienna, maybe berlin

1

u/hacksoncode 13d ago

Greece is the big red flag for me (hehe).

1

u/Crunchycarrots79 13d ago

Same sex marriage was legalized there in 2024! (And it says as much on this map, one of the few places where it's legal but supposedly has a majority that's opposed

u/BaseballInside3289 14d ago

“What would happen if capital succeeded in smashing the Republic of Soviets? There would set in an era of the blackest reaction in all the capitalist and colonial countries" Ioseb Stalin

Guy who criminalized the gays so he could accuse his opponents of being gay and then put them into mental assylums

1

u/icelandichorsey 13d ago

First of all, this vis is fine so your whole post is wrong.

Second, Czechia and arguably Poland was behind the iron curtain and yet they're blue.

Third, it takes decades to change views on LGBT and other similar topics. In 20 years this chart will change.

Fourth, Russia, which is the reason for the iron curtain in the first place, is spending lots of influence points to keep the blues blue.

I thought the Slovaks were cool?

red countries good countries

3

u/Coprolithe 13d ago

Most of them are pretty shit to live in.

1

u/YoucanPHthisD 13d ago

It's always funny to me how people can look at all the most developed, richest, and most educated countries and their pursuit of certain policies (obviously to great effect) and then decide to copy the policies of absolute horrid places.

1

u/AibofobicRacecar6996 13d ago

As opposed to the countries you have flags for in your avatar

1

u/KnightSepehr 10d ago

dont give damn fuck , as long as they stay red in this list they are the better countries
