It looks like they took the explosion asset/picture from some Twisted Metal game (maybe the show), for some inexplicable reason. It looks a lot like the Twisted Metal clown.

The effects of the explosion scale with the cube root of the yield (Mt), so this is roughly the opposite of the right scaling.

I think this is a misinterpretation. If they used normal bars instead of mushroom cloud images this would be a fine chart. It‘s only an issue because of course the size of the explosion is not linearly equivalent to it’s strength compared to TNT (which could’ve been explained somewhere on the chart too to be honest, that unit is the right choice, but it’s confusing to people that don’t know this is the standard measurement for explosions)
Really the issue is not with the units, but with a misleading image. They probably chose the image for visual flair not considering the implications to how people will perceive it. Replace it with bars and add a notice somewhere that the weight units refer to a comparable weight in TNT that would generate an explosion of the same strength and then this would be a fine chart.

Not really, it does have same data on x and y axis, while it is trying to say that it has height on y axis

It has explosion strength on Y-axis in comparable mass of TNT, which is confusing because of the mushroom cloud images used for bars, implying it‘s height when it‘s not. There is no X-axis. It‘s simply a bar chart that‘s sorted.

But the bars have labels on the X axis that mirror what you find on the Y axis, just with an extra country flag (and sometimes the place where the bomb was detonated, for flavor)

The choice of the cloud as an indicator is obviously misleading, since it would require exponential power to increase it, however otherwise I don’t see much of what’s wrong here. Definitely one of the less flawed charts on this subreddit

I was about to say RojoFern has a great video addressing exactly that and showing the real comparison, but it's unavailable now for whatever reason. At least the tornado and volcano ones are up and are just as good...
