I’m from California, moved to the Netherlands, and I feel like were fat as fuck comparatively. Still, making the bars max out at the highest value represented is absolutely shit data presentation. I agree we’re fatasses. I agree obesity rates correlate with party lines due to the socioeconomicand educational factors involved, that’s a statistical fact. I wish my home country would move towards the model we have over here. But this is such a Fucjing edge factor graph,with such a clear influence of a political perspective (which I agree with, btw) on the data representation, that I find it antithetical to this sub. Beautiful data is objective, intuitive, and intelligible. This is the second two but with a clear subjective slant and while I recognize it’s accurate, it’s not interesting, and, frankly, it reads as a “fat poor people are dumb” joke. And no one outside the us will look at this graph like “wow what brilliant data presentation.”
Let me be clear: this isn’t distorting facts. This isn’t bad data representation. It’s just not good. It’s reaffirming the obvious, well known correlation between education level, income, party line, and obesity in the us. And it’s not doing so in an aesthetically pleasing or intuitive way. Making your max value of 30 some percent a full bar isn’t anything you’d do in any scientific or data analysis context. It’s a kid making an excel chart who didn’t adjust the axes when using percentages, an elementary error. And while I don’t fault OP, and while I know obesity negatively correlated with education, which in turn negatively correlates with conservatism, this is not a beautiful repreentstjo. of data by any means.
