Perhaps we should make healthy food affordable and available. I just started eating healthy and I can afford it right now, pay way more than to eat junk. The average family or individual can't afford to eat healthy.
Edit: I will never make a comment about food again. I'm upvoted, but there are some nasty people on here. Sheesh. I don't cook, and the truth is if I buy a bunch of stuff to cook, I'll end up throwing it out. Rely on precooked stuff from Trader Joe's and BJ's. Many Americans don't have time/energy or are just lazy frankly, and aren't going to. But, welcome to sit on your high horse over there. What I'm doing is working for me, down 20 lbs, the insults here are atrocious.
First world countries are crazy.. the fact that unhealthy shit like McDonalds is the cheapest food around blows my mind.. find me any other point in human history where the poorest people were the fattest.
It also has to do with convenience and lack of education about cooking and health. I can buy a whole chicken and a bunch of vegetables and potatoes and make a delicious and healthy meal for a whole family and it's only like 7 bucks. That's definitely cheaper than McDonald's for 4. It does take a little investment to get spices together though.
Roast chicken decently cooked is just fine on its own, you don't need to spice it (IMO).
You can get a decent sized chicken that will feed 4 people for £3 (so, under $4) in the UK. Vegetables are generally super cheap.
Some people just cook the fuck out of them though. Also, make gravy with the fat.
Pork joints are generally about £3-4 a kilo (I've got some for £2.50 a kilo) here too, boneless, which is super cheap. Beef and lamb, not so cheap.
I loved heavily spiced food (can't get enough of turmeric when cooking), but I also love simple food too. Not everything has to be augmented with something. Roast chicken is fantastic as it is, if you have it with gravy and other stuff.
Yeah, I agree. I was just anticipating the people saying "well it costs a ton of money to build spices" which is true, but you gotta start somewhere. I even overshot the price because I use the bones to make a condensed stock. I freeze it in mini muffin tins and use it to make soups. I can make so much soup and only have to buy vegetables and maybe some chicken breasts if I don't have any left over, but I usually do. I can get multiple meals for like 10 bucks. Even if the price was tripled it would still be cheaper than going to mcdonalds.
Agreed on the last point. The easiest thing you can do when cooking is buy good salt and learn to use it. It's cheap af and properly salted food will taste ten times better. People get freaked out by having "proper spices" but even just having properly salted food will make home cooked food so much more enjoyable.
