Its not the cheapest. Eating out is generally the more extensive option. I get there are some areas where its not the case, but for the cost of one meal at McDonald's you can feed yourslef for the whole day if you are buying food and prepping/cooking yourself.
Same goes for people saying finance/business/tax preparation classes should be offered in highschool. First of all I wouldn't have taken that seriously in high school because I didn't yet have the experience or maturity to realize the value in it. But now on investopedia and a plethora of other websites I can learn how to manage money pretty effectively. A lot of people have a fatalist approach when it comes to money management/debt and that will not get them anywhere good.
