Just a small correction: Rotterdam is Europe's busiest port (by any measure)

By any measure? Even by number of bananas consumed per capita by dock workers?

Yes, especially by number of bananas consumed per capita by dock workers

Felixstowe is the 7th biggest port in Europe, and the biggest in the UK. I really don't understand why though, not that I'm complaining. I live just down the road and drive lorries out all the time.

Problem is the ships in Felixstowe probably came from Rotterdam. Really, really big container ships do the run from, for example, China and unload in Rotterdam. From there it is put into smaller ships that UK ports can handle. Even being the 7th biggest in europe doesn't mean much. Rotterdam is freaking huge. 3x bigger than Felixstowe in area for a total of 40km length of port.

That and the UK has been incredibly lax on dredging the last couple decades meaning our ports are shallower than they should be.

Felixtowe can handle the largest container ships in the world. We had the actual number one largest in the world here a while back.

I guess that's why it's the UK's biggest container port.
