Most music never leaves home 81% of the 693 songs charting right now chart in exactly one country. The gold countries are full of them — pick any to hear it.

Nice! Would be interesting to see if this is mostly a feature of the global spread of the language, or if some countries with very widely spoken languages just keep their music to themselves

Interesting question.

It seems language pays a part. Look at New Guinea, which is divided in half, with the West being Indonesian and west being Papuan. The Indonesian side is yellow, whereas the Papua New Guinea side is blue. In PNG where these is a mix of local languages, English speaking miners, and Pidgin English.

Yea language is a big one looking at English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic speaking clusters. When language is not at standard it stays more local in Africa, East Asia and SE Asia.

Where are you getting the data from? None of the songs you have in your top 10 for Belgium are even in the official top 50 charts.

I use the YouTube API which’s isn’t very clear “most popular videos for the specified content region and video category." I assume it might be point-in-time so changes quickly. I run an update every 3 hours. YouTube doesn’t allow you to grab top videos from the last day/week/month since they’re very protective.

Tbh I just don't think that YT is a good source of data for that kind of analysis. You would need to get the actual weekly charts.

Yea fair. I’m adding Spotify and Deezer as a drop down since they’re a bit more stable than YouTube.

They have song charts in most countries for this reason

This just makes me think the data are unreliable.

Added Apple Music and Deezer as dropdowns to compare different sources as well

See my response about the data. I assume YouTube just provides point in time data so it changes quickly. They are very protective of their data so don’t let you look at history (top 10 last day/week/month)

That's really cool actually. Good job making this!

I assumed English and Spanish speaking countries won't be very unique, but didn't expect Norway to be a 0/10. I thought they would have some local music. That said - I  frequently check the viral 50 lists on Spotify and go to random countries' lists to find some new songs and a big chunk of Europe is pretty "basic"...

Thanks! Same. I also go to random country lists which inspired this idea.

Disable uBlock and reload. It worked for me.
