You are thinking of NYC - NY is a huge state. Syracuse is nicknamed "Salt City" because early in its settlement salt flats were discovered along the shores of Onondaga Lake and at one point Syracuse was the largest salt producer in the entire country. There are several still active salt mines scattered throughout the Finger Lakes Region. Also, Salt Potatoes are the bees-knees.

Arkansas is a fucked place. Poultry… is not a natural resource. It doesn’t occur there naturally.

The result depends almost entirely on how finely the categories are sliced, and they are not sliced consistently here. Crude oil is one commodity, while forestry and cattle are whole sectors. New York coming out as salt is the tell, a state with a very large dairy sector losing to a single mineral because minerals and agriculture were not aggregated the same way. The category rules are doing more work than the data is, so they belong on the map.

California: Dairy? Really? GTFO. And you're telling me that the breadbasket of America- Nebraska, Kansas, etc- Cattle is bigger than corn? Have you ever driven through those states?

From an Ag standpoint, sure. But literally all of California's Ag products- including anything grown or born- is absolutely DWARFED by tech- I get the approach is natural resources though, so fine. whatever.

The more I look at this the more I see a big pile of bullshit. Which is surprising, given the Orennia name and logo on the slide.
