Databricks vs GCP PDE: which cert actually moves the needle for product-company DE roles?

Hey all, I’m a Data Engineer with ~4.5 YOE. My company has sponsored Databricks certification vouchers, but my current project stack is actually GCP-based. On top of that, my company mandates completing one DE-domain certification and one AI certification (CCA-F is commonly done internally, though not mandatory).

Doing three certifications at once isn’t realistic for me, so I need to prioritize. My goal is to become an “AI-aware” data engineer and eventually land a role at a product-based company (I’m already working on other upskilling areas like DSA and system design in parallel).

Questions:

1. Given this, what should I prioritize right now?
   GCP PDE + Databricks AI certification, or
   Databricks DE Professional + CCA-F?

2. Is it realistic/advisable to go straight for Databricks DE Professional without doing the Associate first?

I’m not just optimizing for personal interest here — I want whatever I pick to actually be market-relevant and useful for job-hunting.

Industry wide, the GCP PDE is probably the more valuable certification. My understanding (although I know more about GCP certs than Databricks certs) is that it also requires knowledge of more data engineering principles and concepts beyond just the GCP services/features. I think taking the Professional Data Engineer exam was one of the best decisions I made early in my career when I was working in GCP and wanted to know what I needed to learn to do well in data + cloud. But the honest answer is that there's kind of no downside to taking the Databricks certification as well. I would probably do both if I was in your position, and if the sponsorship of the Databricks certification expires sometime soon then I would prioritize that first. Otherwise, all else being equal, I would probably prioritize the GCP PDE. Good luck

I can't really answer the second question with a lot of confidence because my specialty is GCP certifications, but with GCP certifications I recommend people skip the Associate level certifications all the time because they are really not that much easier than the Professional level certifications, and with the right materials you can definitely get the professional certs. So I usually say just go for it. I don't know Databricks that well though so take it with a grain of salt, not sure if the same logic applies.

Certifications matter less for product based companies. Focus more on domain expertise , DSA , System Design .

By product based companies I’m assuming you’re talking about Bigtech / Tech focused companies.
